"Sometimes" is the only possible answer. They might be telling the truth or they might be saying whatever it takes to upset you or reassure you or frighten you or anything else.

Chrissmasjammies · 08/09/2021 14:17

In vino veritasWink

Phoenixrising2020 · 08/09/2021 14:17

I think sometimes they are emboldened to tell 'their truth'. Whether or not they are telling an objective truth is another matter. I know from experience that there are people who will use alcohol as a manipulation tool, I would be very cautious.

SpindleWhorl · 08/09/2021 14:18

No.

Palavah · 08/09/2021 14:18

Sometimes. Sometimes not.

UnsuitableHat · 08/09/2021 14:19

I do, and am usually pretty embarrassed afterwards!

WhatsAppening · 08/09/2021 14:19

No. I say that as a seasoned drinker, and a pub manager.

Drunk people talk a load of old bollocks generally.

idontlikealdi · 08/09/2021 14:20

Mostly yes. In vino veritas and all that. Why?

TakeYourFinalPosition · 08/09/2021 14:20

Sometimes.

Sometimes alcohol makes you more relaxed and less inhibited. Sometimes it makes you talk a lot of rubbish.

It’ll depend greatly on the person, what they said, how drunk they were… and even then; you’d have to make an educated guess based on how likely it was that they meant what they said.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 08/09/2021 14:20

As Phoenix said. They tell their truth, sometimes.

OneTC · 08/09/2021 14:21

I don't believe this to be the case

NewlyGranny · 08/09/2021 14:21

It's their truth. There's nothing that comes out of a drunk's mouth that doesn't come from inside. Alcohol doesn't talk; people do. Alcohol just messes with the filter between brain and mouth.

Tal45 · 08/09/2021 14:23

Can do, I found out something pretty shocking this way.

Anordinarymum · 08/09/2021 14:23

No they do not. They just get nasty

GameofPhones · 08/09/2021 14:24

Alcohol loosens inhibitions, so people are likely to say things they normally wouldn't, but have been on their mind. Some of it may be true, but just as likely not. So ' in vino veritas' but to be taken also 'cum grano salis'.

HarrietsChariot · 08/09/2021 14:24

"Sometimes" is the only correct answer.

Drunk people may feel embolded to tell things they would normally keep quiet about. But not always.

2catsandhappy · 08/09/2021 14:25

Both.

Why is this playing on your mind today op?
Did you hear something that was the opposite of what you had been previously told?

PinkFootstool · 08/09/2021 14:25

No. It's not binary. Drunk people are just as capable of lying as sober people.

tintodeverano2 · 08/09/2021 14:29

Well they might tell "their truth" but as to whether that is the actual truth is questionable.

FourTeaFallOut · 08/09/2021 14:30

Some do, some talk shite.

TreeSmuggler · 08/09/2021 14:31

Sometimes but alcohol isn't a truth serum, they could just as easily be lying.

Doomscrolling · 08/09/2021 14:31

Not generally. They spout a load of nonsense usually. Self included.

TooBigForMyBoots · 08/09/2021 14:31

Sometimes. I have seen some heavy truths revealed by someone drunk. I have also heard the greatest load of nonsensical shite from drunk people.

GivenUpEntirely · 08/09/2021 14:35

In my experience drunk people are likely to say whatever is in their mind. They have very little filter.

Occasionally that will be a truth you wouldn't hear from a sober version of the person.

Other times it'll be something that's based on their drunken observations and based on nothing at all but their version of the truth.

Then of course you have the storytellers emboldened by alcohol who will say complete whoppers in all earnesty then be mortified the next day when the realise they now have to plausibly explain why their estranged super famous pop star sister/brother doesn't have any discernible internet link with them...or come clean that they were telling a whopper!

A person's whole behaviour is important - whether sober or drunk. If in doubt, trust your instinct.

CarrotSticks23 · 08/09/2021 14:38

No. I mean sometimes yes they will tell the truth, other times they just talk shite. Irs impossible to say really
