As for the question re standing up or remaining seated for wiping your bum, you merely have to follow the science to see which way is correct and which method should be illegal.

As long as you're able to lift slightly for hand/paper insertion underneath, the seated position offers the benefit of the, erm, sweet spot already being presented for access for wipeage. Once you stand up, everything naturally closes up again (with an itchy crinkle) and then, instead of simply cleaning up past an open goal, you have to use a long section of paper to perform the reverse Chubby Checker see-saw motion - with added friction and risk of the under-strain perforations yielding, ripping and maybe even flicking some of the bad stuff when you least expect them to.

Nowhere near as odd as the oft-mentioned people that a surprising number of MNers seem to know, who remove every last stitch of their clothing (top half too) every single time before they have a poo. Even their bowler hats.

MyBadHabitsLeadToYou · 08/09/2021 02:18

I have no idea what my husband does. I know he stands to pee but that’s all.

To be honest a man sitting to pee sort of gives me the ick. But I have no idea why Confused

MyBadHabitsLeadToYou · 08/09/2021 02:19

Urgh. What an honour to be present at the birth of a new neurosis.

Lottsxx · 08/09/2021 02:19

No men should sit to wee haha

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 08/09/2021 02:27

Urgh. What an honour to be present at the birth of a new neurosis.

Congratulations! I'd give you your well-earned rolled-up mini diploma.... but you probably wouldn't want it now Grin

shamalidacdak · 08/09/2021 02:38

I refuse to believe that, it's too disgusting. Grown men walk around with piss drips in their pants all DAY?! What if they wee 8 or 9 times a day? That's the equivalent of wetting themselves just vile

Soubriquet · 08/09/2021 02:49

Nope to wiping here

Ds and dh don’t wipe after a wee. They just shake

LouisianaHooha · 08/09/2021 03:02

Yep three boys here. My eight year old still won't wipe his own bum let alone his willy. It's a boy thing ,😭😭😭

Mothership4two · 08/09/2021 03:21

I never knew this was an option. But haven't, up until this point, thought about it. I assumed men just gave it a good shake. I do sometimes see paper in the loo when one of my ds's hasn't pushed the loo handle hard enough, but had assumed they'd blown their nose. So maybe they do wipe?

Recently found out from DS1 that men don't hold their willies during the wee (which explains a lot). Theory is it is pointing down anyway. In films, tv and comedy sketches they always appear to be holding them. False news eh?

gofg · 08/09/2021 03:22

grim adjective (UNPLEASANT)

very unpleasant or ugly:
a grim-looking block of flats

Hope that keeps your irritation levels in check?

It doesn't make any difference - I still find it irritating.

As a matter of fact I heard the word used in a news bulletin today, in the context I am more familiar with (i.e. serious, worrying). I don't live in the UK and I have never heard anyone use grim the way it is used on MN. "A grim looking block of flats" is fine - that means they are depressing, dismal. It's not the same thing as the way it is used on here. In fact my sources say it is UK slang!

leeshuhui · 08/09/2021 03:59

My dh does.

Balonzette · 08/09/2021 04:36

I thought no men did, but my little son has always done it by himself. Insists upon it!

Seldon · 08/09/2021 04:37

Laughing at the idea of a MN designed men’s room with toilet roll holders between every urinal.

Flipflop87 · 08/09/2021 05:29

My DH does this. I didn’t know until I saw him teaching my DS to do it when he was toilet training. It made me laugh at the time but seems a good idea.

LST · 08/09/2021 06:59

@ILoveANameChange

My DH didn't wipe when we first met. I put a stop to that pretty quickly. Its disgusting
Haha. And you think he wipes it every time do you?
username4s · 08/09/2021 07:03

Pleased to say my DH does use tissue. I know this as it's in his religion and he would be classed as unclean if he didn't. He actually washes it at home.

I never really thought of it until we were married but now I find the idea of not wiping and just shaking (probably causing it to spray outside of the toilet) disgusting 🤮

bellabasset · 08/09/2021 07:25

The first thing I used to insist on when cooking with my ndn's ds's was that they should wash their pee pee hands beforehand The main reason for bars and restaurants to use individual sauce sachets and not put snacks out on the bar counter was the fact that people don't wash their hands after going to the toilet and it's unhygienic.

As a child my dm always brought us up to wash our hands, and at school we washed our hands after playtime, before lunch etc. What's interesting is whether this habit of hand washing will be more frequent since the pandemic

Bargebill19 · 08/09/2021 07:30

@bellabasset. I can honestly say, soap usage surges through the lockdowns and has now returned to prepandemic levels of usage. (Not a scientific experiment, just observation of how often I fill soap dispensers in schools, dr surgeries and warehouses/office toilets)

LowlandLucky · 08/09/2021 07:35

One husband and 4 sons, they all shake. Having worked in pre school for decades i know most boys stand up when weeing and shake and go without washing their hands.

houseonthehill · 08/09/2021 07:45

Dabbing with paper might have its uses, but doesn't solve the problem that shaking does solve, which is to free the last couple of drops. Even both together wouldn't be perfect, but to be fair women don't go around with always-pristine knicker gussets either, so it's a bit of a 'so what' thing, surely?

Nodancingshoes · 08/09/2021 07:53

I dont really get involved in DH's weeing habits...I dont think he wipes but who knows? He doesnt smell so he must be doing something right! Grin

5128gap · 08/09/2021 07:54

@Shadedog

Oh! That’s LOADS.

Sort of the same amount as a lorry load still on the lorry though. Language is hilarious

Quite. Though in fairness, I think it used to be used more for a lot of stuff that you would prefer wasn't there, 'I've a shed load of work to get through' 'shed loads of food left over' or stuff that you needed to remove; like you would a lorry load that had ended up on the road.
DameCelia · 08/09/2021 07:56

Wow, this got big didn't it?!
In answer to a couple of the questions to me.
I know my DH wipes because he trained our DS to do the same and told me how disgusting he thinks it is to shake and risk dribbles and smelly pants.
I've just checked with him on weeing outside the home (we're married, have been for several decades, can talk about anything and I'd be a bit worried if I couldn't ask him this!) If out he uses a cubicle, if outside he shakes but doesn't like it.

He sits down to wee, it is apparently better for prostate and bladder health but we are quite old and this advice may be completely outdated now

BackAgain5thAccount · 08/09/2021 07:57

I didn’t know girls used paper for a wee until probably late teens and I’m female (and English).

Charley50 · 08/09/2021 07:58

I didn't know that I could wipe sitting down until I was at uni. I always stood up to wipe Blush
