Met a new guy, really nice, getting on well.
Today we took our dogs for a walk and he grabbed a large stick off the ground, showed it me and said ‘It’s an olive branch’ I jokingly (isn’t funny, bit cheesy) said ‘Oh are you offering me an olive branch?’ 🙄 He was really confused and I explained that it was just a crap joke, like offering someone an olive branch, y’know, the saying…he had no idea what I was talking about and hadn’t heard that saying. Is it weird that I’m really surprised by that? He’s also never heard of Wuthering heights, and, silly one here, The Superman party song, played at practically every children’s party in our 80’s childhood.
We’re both the same age, 43, so he’s not done young guy. Would you be put off by these things (not the Superman one) but the others? It felt weird explaining the saying to him and explaining Wuthering heights 😳 or am I just a bitch?

@YerAWizardHarry Yes, NOW it is.

Years of childhood parties and discos being subjected to that, how could he not have suffered the same or have a recollection of it..he’s exactly the same age and almost exactly the same area, that crap was doing the rounds for years in the 80’s!

@TheHouseIsOnFire 😆Oh god, years of pushing that bloody pineapple and shaking the tree

The superman song is not the one I thought it was... never heard of that!

merryhouse · 06/09/2021 23:17

@seasonalremarks was that a programme about peer pressure and a made-up fad with "oh no mum, I want blockaboots!"?

@ComtesseDeSpair what? what? what? salami? naked? Harrods? what has any of that to do with Saul and a blinding light?

lottiegarbanzo · 06/09/2021 23:17

Thanks for setting both songs running in my head btw!!

Darbysmama · 06/09/2021 23:17

I think you’re being a tad unreasonable here. None of this really seems like a big deal. As others have said, you may just have different cultural backgrounds/references. Only you can decide if that’s really that important to you. Me, personally? As long as he is a good man and you have a genuine connection, then I don’t think explaining references every now and then is a big deal. He’ll likely have to explain some things to you too.

Uribentmyspoon · 06/09/2021 23:19

@notacooldad I know! How could people not have?! Bizarre

It’s like Pavlov’s dogs, the minute it comes on , I have to reign myself in from automatically doing the actions

Sorry Uribentmyspoon, I was spculating, have loked it up. The dove with an olive leaf has been and is a christian symbol of peace but the origins go back to ancient Greece and Rome when defeated armies/tribes would offer the olive branch as a symbol of submission. And of course not only olive growing countries have been riven by strife. Thinking about it I don't think there is any country or land that has not been strife-ridden at some point. Though not all of them grow olives.

Boredmotherofone · 06/09/2021 23:22
@DontMakeMeShushYou It really was an olive branch on the floor, off a tree, we’re not in the U.K. 😅
*on the ground. Buildings have floors, the outdoors has ground.

How would you feel if he was gobsmacked you didn't realise the above and he got the ick like you're doing now?? Food for thought

Ironmanrocks · 06/09/2021 23:23

He's clearly an alien. He has been given a human body and us trying to fit in with us, to see how we humans interact and live.

Snoozer11 · 06/09/2021 23:24

Leaves to Google the Superman song

seasonalremarks · 06/09/2021 23:25

Yes merryhouse!

I once had a BF who couldn’t spell very common words. There, their, they’re, you, your and you’re were all used incorrectly. He was just uneducated and never tried to improve himself. Yes, it bothered me. I gave up and dumped him. 😹

seasonalremarks · 06/09/2021 23:28

@Boredmotherofone Grin

Ilovenandos · 06/09/2021 23:30

Sounds like he has given you the ‘’icky’, I’d say he was not for you if that is the case

DoncasterHombre · 06/09/2021 23:36

I had to sign up for this one . . . . . the "Superman" thing was a big kids party thing in the 80's but - more recently-ish - in the Pemberton/Shearsmith "Psychoville" series . . . . which was hilarious and you'd have been referred to quite quickly!

I'm 39 (male) and love Wuthering Heights. I'd have told you how much of a Heathcliff type I am - black hair, heart, soul and all - and pointed out (with my stick) that I had more red flags than communism rally before asking which is the best video for the Kate Bush version of the somg (it's the red dress one, btw!)

Still, he maybe didn't go to many parties and didn't read any Brontë as a kid? You'd perhaps not pick it up as an adult male? Dunno about the olive branch thing!

GrandmaSteglitszch · 06/09/2021 23:37

I think he's having you on by pretending not to know about things.

Mye be he was disslecksic.
TheHouseIsOnFire · 06/09/2021 23:42

Boredmother you were born too late - you’d have been a baby when it was doing the rounds. Those of us 10+ years older than you would have heard it at every school/village hall disco for a few years, so anyone a bit older or younger would have escaped it! And anyone who didn’t go to discos, whose DJs didn’t own a copy, or who have blanked it from their mind will thankfully not have it stuck in their head for the next 72 hours.

Uribentmyspoon · 06/09/2021 23:46

@Boredmotherofone Quite possibly.

Doesn’t seem on par for me though

I’d be envious of someone who’d never heard any Black Lace songs, I think. I wish I’d never heard them.

@BlackForestCake Quite 😂
