Met a new guy, really nice, getting on well.
Today we took our dogs for a walk and he grabbed a large stick off the ground, showed it me and said ‘It’s an olive branch’ I jokingly (isn’t funny, bit cheesy) said ‘Oh are you offering me an olive branch?’ 🙄 He was really confused and I explained that it was just a crap joke, like offering someone an olive branch, y’know, the saying…he had no idea what I was talking about and hadn’t heard that saying. Is it weird that I’m really surprised by that? He’s also never heard of Wuthering heights, and, silly one here, The Superman party song, played at practically every children’s party in our 80’s childhood.
We’re both the same age, 43, so he’s not done young guy. Would you be put off by these things (not the Superman one) but the others? It felt weird explaining the saying to him and explaining Wuthering heights 😳 or am I just a bitch?

@BrieAndChilli That’s true. Feel shitty when I think about it like that, I genuinely not making fun. As I say, he does know kits about things I don’t, so could likely be thinking the same thing when I look perplexed or my eyes glaze over.

I suppose we have different interests and mine are quite important to me*

No one will have the exact same points of reference, regardless of age or where they are from. That’s not necessary the same as interests.

Although, if you are only getting to know each other and your eyes are glazing over or finding some of his topics of conversation perplexing, you don’t really sound like a match.

I'm always amazed by the films people haven't seen/heard of but then maybe they were doing other things instead of watching videos all the time like I was when I was as a teen Grin

You are writing him off too soon, for a really ridiculous reason. My partner is Spanish and despite being months apart our childhoods are completely different. If I had dismissed him for not knowing about the kind of stuff you are I would have missed out an incredibly loving, supportive and funny man who is perfect for me.

We also don't live our lives talking about the 90's or 00's. I will admit even with friends it's nice to reminisce about these things but that's it. What's important is who he is as a person now and how you may fit together in the present and potentially in the future.

Except that it’s called the ‘forest floor’, so the word clearly is appropriate to use in this context.

I think that’s different — one of the nicest things about forming a relationship with someone from another culture is you both sharing culture-specific stuff that is new to the other. I wouldn’t expect a Spaniard to have read Wuthering Heights any more than they’d expect me to have read Don Quixote.

Out of all 3 you listed, I only know the olive branch saying.
It's really normal to not know songs other people consider popular or 'classics'.

I get the same reaction when I say I've never watched Friends. People always go 'No way😳!' And act as if it's just the most unheard of thing.

What really matters is if you like him and have a connection.

I’ve never seen an episode of Friends either, come to think of it. However, having said that, I know all the main character names and identities, the actors who played them, the ‘Rachel’ haircut, several key plots etc, just because so much of it has seeped in popular culture, I think you’d have to have your head in a bag not to have passively absorbed a fair amount.

Friends always looks annoying as fuck to me. Even the theme music.

HauteGirlSummer · 11/09/2021 09:30

@SeriouslyISuppose oh yes definitely know all of the characters' names, the Rachel haircut and even the smelly cat song 😂🤣

But a lot of other references I won't get and have to admit I haven't seen it which is usually followed by shock horror lol

People usually think I’m making it up that I’ve never seen an episode in order to sound all austere and intellectual. Grin

I then point out that I adore America’s Next Top Model.

Omg same! I loved that show. And I also binge watch a bunch of other reality tv competitions on Netflix so definitely not being a snob with the Friends thing.

Also, where I'm from Friends aired in French so they all had dubbed voices. When I heard their real voices for the first time it was very odd 😂

Underamour · 11/09/2021 09:53

If I liked him and we had alot in common then no, it wouldn’t put me off.

Sorry, I didn’t think to put, we’re not in the U.K., but both British. There was an actual olive branch on the floor when we were walking in the woods, it’s pretty normal, so he was literally stating it was an olive branch, when he picked it up.

The Superman song thing isn’t bad or that surprising, I think it was just a bit ‘Huh?’ to me as there’s been quite a few things I’m
surprised he doesn’t know, or that I’ve had to explain.

The Superman song is by Black lace I think. As a kid we had to follow the actions ‘Comb your hair’ ‘Spray!’ ‘Superman!’ 🤣Am sure I’m not making much sense, perhaps it’s me!

I've never been to a wood that had a floor!

I don't know the 'Superman' song but I do know the Birdie song and the theme tune to He Man, Masters of the Universe.
