To be annoyed by people whose social media profile picture are just their DC?

I realise this a trivial non-issue, but…

AIBU to be slightly irritated by people whose profile pictures on Facebook, WhatsApp etc are just of their children, and not of themselves?

You are a person in your own right, with your own identity, not just your DC’s. Own it with a picture of yourself! People get annoyed that when they become parents they are permanently known as ‘DD’s mum’ and then they lean into it by replacing their own face with their DCs!

In practical terms it’s also irritating on class WhatsApp groups and suchlike when you’re trying to put faces to names and there’s no face.

I use a picture of my dog. What does that say about me?

Puffalicious · 01/09/2021 18:23

Oh bore off!

EmeraldShamrock · 01/09/2021 18:24

Some people don't like photos of themself while still being aware they're a person.
I keep my watsapp blank.

BrisbaneandGone · 01/09/2021 18:25

YABU, what does it matter...really?

Spelunking · 01/09/2021 18:25

@ApolloandDaphne

I was just going to say the same about my friend having her cats! 🤷🏼‍♀️😂 I haven’t really got it in me to care. When I add a number I put where I know people from next to their name.

This.

I use an avatar.

PepsiHoover · 01/09/2021 18:27

My picture is of my kids. I look hideous on my pictures and my kids look cute.

MouseInCatsClaws · 01/09/2021 18:27

I've done this. It's because I do not possess a single picture of myself taken since 2008 that I would happily allow other people to see, so I hide behind my kidsGrin
I do take your point that it's annoying though

Darthwader · 01/09/2021 18:28

I use a pic I like which obviously isn't of my big mug or leave it blank.

MrsRobbieHart · 01/09/2021 18:28

Mine is a picture of my dead dog. Not sure what you make of that?

Banani · 01/09/2021 18:29

Leave people to manage their own social media and they see fit, really none of your business.

Chikapu · 01/09/2021 18:29

Mine just says don't be a dick, I think it's good advice.

Absolutely this. But then my profile pic is some exceptionally fabulous scotch eggs I made a while ago...they were spot on perfect Grin
DuckDuckGooses · 01/09/2021 18:29

Meh, up to the individual in personal situations.

HOWEVER some people at work have their kids as their Skype photo. That's not okay IMO - I don't want to be on an hour long call looking at a photo of a child talking to me. Blush

KaleJuicer · 01/09/2021 18:29

Completely agree with you op. Though I prefer a picture of anything that might say something about their personality (eg dog or nature scene) rather than their child.

RuthW · 01/09/2021 18:30

I never have mine showing. Over ten years ago my profile pic was used by someone else trying to befriend teens.

douliket · 01/09/2021 18:30

Mine is always my children, love it 😍

LaMagdalena · 01/09/2021 18:30

My 2 year old is more photogenic than me though.

1984Winston · 01/09/2021 18:30

I rarely use a photo of me, it's usually one of my pets, because I hate looking at photos of myself and my cats are gorgeous

Askingforfriend · 01/09/2021 18:31

People put pictures up that they want on their profile. Their profile isn't for your benefit.

ACloseMatch · 01/09/2021 18:31

I never use a photo of me. It maintains privacy eg on my Twitter feed and is frankly more fun. I use variously a photo of my (dead) dog, a photo of a bookshop window and an avatar. All recognisably "me" to anyone who does know me.

FannyBrice · 01/09/2021 18:35

Scotch eggs sound good @DistantVworp, do you have a recipe? Grin
I have never given someone's profile photo a second thought until now. Perhaps you should keep your friends list to people you actually know?

PersonaNonGarter · 01/09/2021 18:36

How much time do you have on your hands, OP? Grin

Floogal · 01/09/2021 18:41

Bit irritating I agree. But I think it's really sad when people have their nephews and nieces or friend's kids as main profile pictures. Especially when it's guys trying to look sensetive and cutesy to impress their female friends

Londoner5s · 01/09/2021 18:42

I actually agree with the OP, it always makes me internally roll my eyes. I think if you have privacy concerns an animal is fine or an avatar is fine but it makes no sense to use a photo of your child if you're concerned about privacy, what about the child's privacy!
