To be annoyed by people whose social media profile picture are just their DC?

I realise this a trivial non-issue, but…

AIBU to be slightly irritated by people whose profile pictures on Facebook, WhatsApp etc are just of their children, and not of themselves?

You are a person in your own right, with your own identity, not just your DC’s. Own it with a picture of yourself! People get annoyed that when they become parents they are permanently known as ‘DD’s mum’ and then they lean into it by replacing their own face with their DCs!

In practical terms it’s also irritating on class WhatsApp groups and suchlike when you’re trying to put faces to names and there’s no face.

Glad to see I am not completely on my own on this. I did say it was trivial!

I’ll take privacy as a valid reason for not having a picture of yourself, but then you would equally not have your DC either.

I must say this does bug me mostly on WhatsApp where I’m part of numerous large groups and it’s irritating not being able to identify people because they have a picture of a cute baby (usually years out of date).

It's because they are fat. Nobody wants to be reminded of that every time they login.

thisplaceisweird · 01/09/2021 18:45

Agree OP. Either boring or ugly.

FishfingerFlinger · 01/09/2021 18:46

@MrsRobbieHart

Mine is a picture of my dead dog. Not sure what you make of that?
Was the dog alive when the picture was taken? That influences my opinion.

I agree. It's usually women who do this too, it's rare to see a man with his kid as his avatar. I just think it's a bit sad that they have no identity other than being a parent.

felulageller · 01/09/2021 18:50

It's because women have so much self hatred.

Xmassprout · 01/09/2021 18:51

My Facebook picture is currently just of my children. Everyone on my Facebook knows what I look like, usually I do have my own picture. But I fancied a change and it was a cute picture

I am still more than just a mum. A picture doesn't define who I am, my social media doesn't define who I am. I am still my own person, I don't need a picture of myself to know that I am still my own person and not just my children's mum

@Chikapu

Mine just says don't be a dick, I think it's good advice.

@FannyBrice

Scotch eggs sound good *@DistantVworp*, do you have a recipe? Grin I have never given someone's profile photo a second thought until now. Perhaps you should keep your friends list to people you actually know?
I am quite surpassingly shit at recipes (which may explain why amazing scotch eggs are a slightly rare occurrence). The recipe for Scotch eggs goes:

Soft boil some eggs, wrap eggs in sausage meat (preferably cumberland). How much sausage meat? Enough. Dip the wrapped eggs in some seasoned flour, egg, then breadcrumbs. Deep fry until done. (How long? Till done. What temperature - dunno - they should bubble when they hit the oil).

Many of my friends have pictures of themselves and their daughters.
Their sons don't seem to get a look in.

Oh yes I have noticed this a thing too!

Even by AIBU standards, why would anyone care?

Mine switches between myself, scenic views, my son, and ones of me, my son and husband together.

I'd be a puzzle!

christyt114 · 01/09/2021 19:11

I agree with you. It's their social media, not their child's!

Theoldprospector · 01/09/2021 19:12

‘ I just think it's a bit sad that they have no identity other than being a parent.’

Nobody’s identity is their social media content.

furbabymama87 · 01/09/2021 19:13

The only time it bothered me was when I was doing online dating and kids were in the profile picture. I don't care otherwise. People can do what they want as long as they're not hurting anyone. Strange thing to be offended by.

It’s not like it incites me to a furious rage.

It’s just one of those minor social media irritants. Like people who haven’t learned how to add a soft return when sending messages.

Excellent @DistantVworp thank you, I shall follow that to the letter, they look delicious đŸ‘Œ

Hemingwaycat · 01/09/2021 19:23

Some people don’t take selfies and nobody else takes photos of them so what are they really supposed to do? Guessing some have crushingly low self esteem too so don’t want photos of themselves online. I know some have a pic of their pet instead. Not everyone takes Facebook seriously and they just have it for marketplace or whatever.

Planty13 · 01/09/2021 19:23

I agree but obviously in the minority here…

gingganggooleywotsit · 01/09/2021 19:24

I don’t think it’s annoying but it does suggest a mum who has totally lost her identity, which is a shame.
