To be annoyed by people whose social media profile picture are just their DC?

I realise this a trivial non-issue, but…

AIBU to be slightly irritated by people whose profile pictures on Facebook, WhatsApp etc are just of their children, and not of themselves?

You are a person in your own right, with your own identity, not just your DC’s. Own it with a picture of yourself! People get annoyed that when they become parents they are permanently known as ‘DD’s mum’ and then they lean into it by replacing their own face with their DCs!

In practical terms it’s also irritating on class WhatsApp groups and suchlike when you’re trying to put faces to names and there’s no face.

@rainbowandglitter

I've never put my child as my profile picture. Profile pictures can be viewed by anyone. My ds is now starting high school, his classmates could look up my profile and find baby and toddler pictures of him and tease him with them. No thanks.
On WhatsApp you can say only contacts which is what I have my settings on
muffinffaces · 01/09/2021 20:11

I always find them more appealing then duck face selfies or topless abs shot 🤷🏻‍♀️

namechangetheworld · 01/09/2021 20:11

I do this. I think the most recent photo of me is from my wedding seven years ago, and I find selfies taken by anybody over the age of 21 arse clenchingly embarassing.

How many pictures can you fit in your profile? Mine only allows one!

PolytheneRam · 01/09/2021 20:12

I look like a sack of shit and would rather not be reminded of it

muffinffaces · 01/09/2021 20:13

and also how can his classmates even see these photos?

Gotmyhoops · 01/09/2021 20:13

It has never crossed my mind to judge someone on their profile photo. Just shows how many people are not very happy with their own lives to project that they think others are sad for having a photo they don’t approve of.

UnitedRoad · 01/09/2021 20:14

I’d never put my photo up! Mines usually pets but currently football as I’m a bit excited about a new/old signing.

I’d never thought that people might not like it. Now you’ve made me think it though so… I’ll stick to photos of my pets or sometimes football.

muffinffaces · 01/09/2021 20:16

‘ I just think it's a bit sad that they have no identity other than being a parent.’

Mine is currently a beach photo, I don't identify as a beach!

GrouchyKiwi · 01/09/2021 20:17

I had Vegeta as my profile pic for a while. I hope that was ok.

My favourite was the statues from a museum in Florence that had lost their hands and thus looked like zombies.

muffinffaces · 01/09/2021 20:18

My facebook is a photo of me but from about 10 years ago. I very rarely use facebook & I don't think about my profile or changing it.

BackInBlackAgain · 01/09/2021 20:24

My daughter is beautiful, I am not so why would I inflict my mug on people? Also have my dog as my profile picture.

DappledThings · 01/09/2021 20:32

Clearly a minority but I'm with you OP! And yes a but irritating rather than rage inducing but it does make me cringe a bit.

FishfingerFlinger · 01/09/2021 20:37

1 in 3 agree with me - have to say I’m surprised it is so many, I though I was alone in this!

I rotate my pics between ones of me, with dh, with kids or just the kids. I much prefer the ones with just the kids as I take horrendous pics.

DrinkFeckArseBrick · 01/09/2021 21:02

Oh yes this annoys me. The most interesting thing that you can say about yourself is...that you are related to a totally separate person. I find its bit sad, like those people who are asked 'describe yourself in 3 words' and the first two are 'mother, wife' then ones that actually say something.
I dont like pictures of myself but I still manage to put one up, in a ski mask / helmet etc

DrinkFeckArseBrick · 01/09/2021 21:08

Also everyone thinks photos of them are shit. Probably your kids do to. You hate using your own photo...so you use someone elses? Imagine how much you would hate that if someone used your photo. When you weren't even on Facebook or whatever yourself

shouldistop · 01/09/2021 21:08

The most interesting thing that you can say about yourself is.

Why do you think that people use their profile picture as the most interesting thing they can say about themselves?

MatildaOfFlanders · 01/09/2021 21:27

Who cares? It’s weird but hardly irritating.

Spelunking · 01/09/2021 21:59

@StarryStarrySocks

I agree. It's usually women who do this too, it's rare to see a man with his kid as his avatar. I just think it's a bit sad that they have no identity other than being a parent.
Dh has the kids and baby dn on his WhatsApp as he thinks he’d look like a dick to have a pic of himself. Mine is one of myself drinking a pint. 😁

Came for the outrage, stayed for the recipes Grin

esloquehay · 01/09/2021 22:43

I absolutely loathe my physical appearance, to the extent my house does not have any decent sized mirrors, as I can bear seeing my face or body.
So, I have my children, cats, or a random picture for social media profile pics.

NowEvenBetter · 01/09/2021 22:53

Surely it’s becoming commonplace for kids photos and personal information to not be freely available online? Using a child’s image which they can’t consent to, and it’s then online forever isn’t a brilliant idea.

AccidentallyOnPurpose · 01/09/2021 22:57

On WhatsApp OH has a pic of DD, me one of myself and DD a pic of the cat. Priorities.Grin

On FB I alternate between me ,DD, me and oh, all three of us etc depending what I get a nice pic of.
