To be annoyed by people whose social media profile picture are just their DC?

I realise this a trivial non-issue, but…

AIBU to be slightly irritated by people whose profile pictures on Facebook, WhatsApp etc are just of their children, and not of themselves?

You are a person in your own right, with your own identity, not just your DC’s. Own it with a picture of yourself! People get annoyed that when they become parents they are permanently known as ‘DD’s mum’ and then they lean into it by replacing their own face with their DCs!

In practical terms it’s also irritating on class WhatsApp groups and suchlike when you’re trying to put faces to names and there’s no face.

It annoys me too (in a minor way, I'm not getting worked up about it, but now you've brought it up etc - OP you get me!) but mainly because it's always women going 'oh I hate the way I look in photos' or whatever. You never hear men saying that kind of thing, and it makes me sad the way we all hate ourselves so much.

I use a picture of myself because it also annoys me from the point of view that when you are trying to look someone up, or someone messages you, you can't always tell it's the right person if they don't have a photo of themselves.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 01/09/2021 19:29

@gingganggooleywotsit

I don’t think it’s annoying but it does suggest a mum who has totally lost her identity, which is a shame.
Not really it’s the pictures I like best at the moment- I still go out without my kids, conduct phone calls with friends and shock horror even work when not on mat leave

Mines my dog! She's beautiful and I'm not đŸ˜‚

HemanOrSheRa · 01/09/2021 19:32

DS would be mighty pissed off if I used a pic of him. He's 16 and hasn't wanted me posting pics of him on SM for a few years now which is fine. So mine is of my dogs too. Naughtiest at the front. My cover profile on FB is my boy dog showing off his balls.

XenoBitch · 01/09/2021 19:32

I never use a picture of myself on social media. Have been attacked several times for that... and that goes to show if my actual face was online then my appearance would be subject to attack too. Hence why it is always something else.

@DistantVworp

I like your recipe style. Please write a cookbook.

merryhouse · 01/09/2021 19:35

Mine is of me aged 8 - is that ok? Grin

I've got a picture of Jack Grealish. Blush

Skinnytailedsquirrel · 01/09/2021 19:38

I have a picture of the best pizza I've eaten for a long time.

ThinWomansBrain · 01/09/2021 19:38

I don't use Facebook or much SM at all - those I do have a picture of my cat.
LinkedIn has a cartoon drawing of me.
I use my photo for work emails/teams/zoom - essentially people that know me, however I joined a new company recently, added my photo to everything, then realised that no-one else has photos on emails, but it would seem odd to take it off again.

PumpkinKlNG · 01/09/2021 19:40

Mines of my kids on WhatsApp as I look hideous in pictures

HunterHearstHelmsley · 01/09/2021 19:46

I agree @FishfingerFlinger

In my experience, it is women that do this rather than men. It's as though they are just mothers now, they are no longer a woman/person in their own right.

I love seeing photos of my friends and family's children. I also love to see pictures of my friends and relatives. Particularly a selfie. To me, that means they are feeling good about themselves that day and they like how they look in that photo.

I hope you're MCFC and not AVFC... he has been removed from mine!
Constellationstation · 01/09/2021 19:47

This has always irritated me as well OP!

tempchecked · 01/09/2021 19:48

I have the nice view of sunset on the hills from my bedroom window. Always cheers me up when I look outside and see it, because inside is in dire need of an overhaul!

Imnewhere1991 · 01/09/2021 19:49

Totally agree Op. I am still 'me' , bit just 'mum'. I keep my profiles about me.

amillionmenonmars · 01/09/2021 19:50

I never use my photo - I'm a teacher and I want to keep my profile as private as possible.

CoffeeWithCheese · 01/09/2021 19:53

I am fat. I am ugly and I am also the complete antithesis of photogenic - the camera hates me.

My kids are fucking gorgeous and I'm incredibly proud of them - so I inflict their gorgeousness on the internet rather than my double chin.

FishfingerFlinger · 01/09/2021 19:53

@merryhouse

(off to google Soft Return now...)

I’ll let you get away with that Grin

Not sure if soft return is the right word but I mean when people press send after every sentence so you get a half a dozen messages like:

Hi Fishfinger

How are you?

Can I just check something?

What’s the start time on Friday?

Let me know!

What does a dog say about your personality KaleJuicer- isn't that just a pet you have.

MyPatronusIsACat · 01/09/2021 19:57

Neither. I just think he is proper gorgeous. Blush

rainbowandglitter · 01/09/2021 19:59

I've never put my child as my profile picture. Profile pictures can be viewed by anyone. My ds is now starting high school, his classmates could look up my profile and find baby and toddler pictures of him and tease him with them.
No thanks.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 01/09/2021 19:59

@MyPatronusIsACat I'll allow it. He's not but I'll allow it đŸ¤£

shouldistop · 01/09/2021 20:05

Maybe they don't want you putting their face to their name?
Maybe they don't like photos of themselves?
Maybe lots of other reasons.

I can't imagine getting annoyed about what someone chooses to use as their profile picture.

Thatsjustwhatithink · 01/09/2021 20:10

I've got a picture of a mountain. Because I am actually mount Everest. I haven't climbed or even been to Nepal. But it's a lovely pic.

Seriously who gives a dick about a WhatsApp profile pic?
