If you're 38+years does your body hurt when you get out of bed?

My pelvis hurts when I get out of bed or drive for a long time.
There's various reasons for this, and thought it was just me.

However, it turns out DH hurts in the morning. And my friend came round yesterday and he hurts in the morning.

So is this an age thing?!

None of us are overweight although I'm borderline. My friend and I are definitely unfit. DH is really fit but in his 50's.

YANBU - I'm 38+ and things hurt
YABU - what are you on about? Nothing is supposed to hurt!

Late 30s and no - despite an on/off bad back, and a knee operation a few years ago.
We do have a very comfortable mattress though and I sleep with pillows between my knees and behind my back. I find pocket sprung much better than memory foam, but that’s probably personal preference.
I’d really recommend a good physio and Pilates. Both have helped me hugely.
I do remember that my physio said, during my knee rehab, that stiffness in the morning is usually a sign of inflammation. Swelling is a big thing to look out for in knee surgery rehab, and he used to start every session with “how are the first couple of steps in the morning?”

I'm 40 and nothing hurts in the morning unless I've done a particularly hard exercise session the day before. I don't hurt the day after normal exercise (I run mainly.)

userxx · 30/08/2021 22:53

Yep, this past 6 months, I feel I have aged 20 years.

WellTidy · 30/08/2021 22:59

I ache a lot less when I lose weight. I got down to a 24.something BMI earlier this year and I wasn’t aching at all then. This coincided with me doing a lot of walking, so it could be a mix of the two things.

I’ve gained half a stone since and stopped walking, and now I ache again. I’ve also come back from a week of sleeping on a very soft mattress every night, and that has really hurt my back.

I need to stretch and sleep on my firm mattress for a while to sort me out.

We have heated seats in the car and that really helps ease the pain.

MessOfEyelinerAndSpraypaint · 30/08/2021 23:04

Two things changed me-firstly, injuring my spine & requiring surgery to walk again, and - secondly, as pp have also testified: a new mattress. I was being ridiculous & sofa sleeping for too long after an unavoidably immediate house 'move'.
Also, I regard myself as normally very fit & a slim weight. Aside from the afflicted spine downtime.
Always get something persistent checked out, OP.

PaganOfTheGoodTimes · 30/08/2021 23:08

I'm newly 40 and fairly hefty and while I ache after gardening or so on, I don't hurt getting out of bed. Echo PPs - buying the best mattress and bed you can afford definitely helps!

IdblowJonSnow · 30/08/2021 23:13

I'm mid 40s and am very achey these days. I put it down to decreasing oestrogen and family history of arthritis...

Tigertigertigertiger · 30/08/2021 23:19

@fufulina
Please tell us how you did it !

MissTrip82 · 30/08/2021 23:23

44 and no.

I was flabbergasted to see you thought being 38 should mean this. That’s really, really not the norm.

IHateFlies · 30/08/2021 23:26

I do if I have a lot of sugar. I now do intermittent fasting and don’t have much sugar and I feel fine. I’m in my late 40’s.

justasking111 · 30/08/2021 23:40

Baby at 44 third probably didn't help a recent scan showed I had scoliosis form birth or trauma consultant said. Physio guy gave me exercises which I dig out and do they help as does swimming

Paid a lot for a good mattress which helps too.

EatYourVegetables · 30/08/2021 23:57

No. Early 40s, hard mattress, not very fit and a few pounds extra but working on it and exercising, office job. Neck is making funny noises and lower back is in need of a stretch by 5pm, but if I was sore every morning I would try to change some things.

theliverpoolone · 31/08/2021 00:17

I'm 53 and hurt....
Hips ache...shoulders ache...knees are so stiff...
Once I'm up and moving, I'm not too bad but definitely an age thing!

I felt like this, and put it down to age, but it got progressively worse until I realised it couldn't be possible that most older people were in so much pain. Turned out I have polymyalgia rheumatica. As soon as I started on steroids the pain disappeared, it was miraculous.

EarringsandLipstick · 31/08/2021 08:59

I agree with those saying it's not an 'age thing' & am really taken aback that so many seem happy to accept that it might just be age.

If you are regularly any way stiff or in pain you need to check it out. If there isn't a medical cause, you need to urgently work on your overall fitness, and flexibility particularly. Imagine how much worse you will be in your older years if you don't address this now.

PaperMonster · 31/08/2021 09:03

I’m 52 with scoliosis, osteoarthritis and hyper mobility. I currently also have a frozen shoulder. I’m fine in the morning (other than arm pain) but by bedtime I’m stiff and hurting. I find that an acupressure mat helps.

OneAugustNight · 31/08/2021 09:05

I ached all over for years, especially feet and lower back. Told the doctor who literally just looked at me and didn’t say a word. I discussed it with friends older than me and and they didn’t have the same aches and pains so I knew it wasn’t right.

Anyway for some reason now I am late 50s I no longer ache at all. I can’t think of anything I am doing different. I am the same weight (slim) and do the same level of activity (not enough.) I don’t like yoga at all.

Bawse · 31/08/2021 09:09

No I feel fine when I wake up in the morning. Although currently a bit less energy post the listless months of lockdown. Maybe look into an exercise routine?

LemonMeringueThreePointOneFour · 31/08/2021 09:19

@GintyMcGinty

I'm 47 and don't have morning aches.
Ditto.
Wishihadanalgorithm · 31/08/2021 11:04

I am 48 and when I get up in the morning or after I have been sitting still for a significant amount of time my legs, feet and ankles feel stiff and achy.

I think weight is definitely a part of this issue for me and I need to do more stretching to help. I take chondrocare supplements which include chondrotin and glucosamine which do help but as soon as I stop taking them the aches are back.
