or were they being total 'jobsworth' meltdown in Ikea

So bit of a long one but... I applied for the ikea finance thingy, it's no interest so seemed good. Got the virtual card - its like a bank card, and on the website it said you had to show it at the till and then they would key in the numbers. So went on Fri eve, took about 3 hours to do all the shopping, mainly a bed, but you know what it's like there. Got to the till, and the guy said I had to have the app. What app? Ikea finance app, he said. So there I was trying to download this app at the till with people queueing behind me. When it finally downwloaded it said I couldnt use it as it needed 14+ update.

So then a 'manager' came over and said I could "do it" online. So she directed me to this website for the finance company. But I couldnt log in as it said I needed a family card number, but I don't have a family card.

She suggested I go over to the doors to get better reception on wifi. I said it wasnt the wifi that was the problem!

I then tried to login in the ikea finance website, but for some reason my phone kept doing the 'circle of doom'. - When I got home I tried it again, and it still did it, only conclusion is that my phone isn't new enough.

So I begged her, to let me use the card. She said no as she "didnt know it was me". So I had to just leave all the stuff and go home.

So back again on Saturday. I tried logging in on my laptop, which is how I applied for the loan and it worked perfectly. So I rang customer service, and said could I show my laptop at the till, no problem.

When I got there to be sure, I found a manager at the till, and explained the problem. I said I didnt want to do all my shopping and then get to the till and the same thing happened, so could I show her beforehand. OK she said. So I pulled out the laptop but couldnt login!!!!!!!!! I think it was the ikea wifi wasnt strong enough. So I went away and was able to connect using my mobile hotspot. Went back and tried to find her but she kept moving away and chatting to her colleagues and ignoring me. In the end after about 15 mins of me standing there trying to get her attention I went up and said 'excuse me' and tried explaining again. I showed her how I had logged in, and she could see the card etc. But... she said the rule was I had to show it at the till when I got there. I said but what if my laptop plays up and I cant get logged in, you've seen it now, cant you say that I can definitely use it? No, she said. I said that it didn't say anything about that on their website, and shouldnt it be a bit clearer. She said no, it was very clear, and nobody else had ever had a problem. It was getting a bit heated now, well I was getting upset. I asked her a few more times but she wouldnt budge. I jsut burst out crying, I was just at the end of my tether. I felt like screaming at the bloody mindedness of the whole thing. Eventually another manager came over, and he took me to a seat, and he phoned another manager, and then another manager, and eventually they said ok, they had seen me login, and "knew it was me", and if I did my shopping I would be able to use the card.

I'm still upset, stupid I know. I'm thinking as well is this just discrimination against people who don't have top of the range phones? I mean my phone works perfect for everything, just not this for some reason. It's a 12 update I think. So it's not ancient or anything. Surely they need to have some flexibility if the technology is not working?

Thanks for reading if you've gotten this far. I honestly don't know what I could have done different...?? I've tried to contact the bank they set up, Ikano , but impossible to get a response...

I have a perfectly serviceable iPhone 6. It won’t update past IOS 12. It may have been released in 2014 but I bought it new later than that. It’s very annoying.

BarbaraofSeville · 29/08/2021 15:36

@AliensEverywhere

I feel for you, there's a shop I use locally which uses a new loyalty app that gives you discounts. I can't use it because my smart phone is too old to download it and so I miss out on the discounts. I can't afford to buy a new phone.

It's another divide between those with and without.

Only if you insist on using apple's overpriced products with built in obsolescence. I have a,£100 3 yo android and have none of these problems
CrazyCatLazy · 29/08/2021 15:45

Okay so, from what I can gather you need IOS 14+.
My phone is 3 years old and nowhere near the latest model iPhone but it has had the latest update.
You need to go to settings, general, software update. This is what you put you on to install and download the latest update of 14 plus.

DH went to buy a printer at a well known store recently. He was standing with it, ready to pay, when they asked him for a security check so they knew it was him. They wanted to ring the phone number they had stored with his details.

Fair enough, except it was our landline! He pointed out to them that (a) it wasn't working & BT hadn't fixed it yet & (b) even if it was working, he was there in the store, right in front of them, & so he could not possibly be at home to answer it. They couldn't be talked out of it & wouldn't sell anything to him without it, so he had to leave the printer there & come home.

Now THAT's a jobsworth!

Commiserations, OP. IKEA reduces me to almost tears most times I try to buy somehting there, even without your hassle.

Rosebel · 29/08/2021 15:57

I can understand why you were upset and frustrated but given it took 3 or 4 managers to sort the issue I don't think she could have just said okay then
It also can't be that common if all the managers didn't know what to do.

AliensEverywhere · 29/08/2021 16:05

Fair enough BarbaraofSeville it is an iPhone I have. Unfortunately I can't afford to replace it at the moment because I don't have a spare £20 let alone £100.

The iPhone was given to me by my exH who had upgraded to the latest model, up till that point I was using an old nokia with buttons ha ha! I miss that phone.

It's a new problem really, you either find tech that will stand the test of time or you fork out to keep up with the newest model. If you picked the wrong company (Apple) and like me are very low income you have to live with your obsolete tech and miss out on the offers only available by app.

Muststopeating · 29/08/2021 16:05

Haven't read thread.

YANBU neither the app or the website ever works!!! Its horrendous! I used to work for a major tech company so I am fairly apt with technology/apps. My loan was for a kitchen which has been placed over gazillions of orders because of stock issues. Can't describe to you how many problems there have been.

Its because its new, a few months ago they were still going paper applications. But they need to sort it out!! Quickly.

P.S. you can order online with it, might be easier for you to do click and collect where its already paid for.

Slub · 29/08/2021 16:07

@midsomermurderess

And then you come home and write an essay about. Are you sure it wasn't in fact the highlight of your week? Honestly, who otherwise has the energy?
Unnecessary and downright nasty remark

But this is a 7 year old (at least) phone. In four years time, if you still have the same phone, see how many apps will be compatible at that point on your Android. My guess is: not a lot.

HalzTangz · 29/08/2021 16:08

Most apps nowdays will only work on the last 3 or 4 updates. Since the 12 the would have been several update (12.1 12.5, 13, 13.1, and so on) it's not really feasible to have an app running for older updates (as most people change there phones every 2 years).
However, stores should cater for those that don't have the technology. This is a simple solution in my eyes, send a letter to every customer (annually if needs be) confirming they have an account and that ID would need to be shown with the letter at till points.

HalzTangz · 29/08/2021 16:15

@SheABitSpicyToday

I don’t get what you mean by 14+ phone??
It's the operating system.

I suspect the OP has an iPhone that's a few years old and stops updating on the iOS 12 update

ChicChaos · 29/08/2021 16:17

Frustrating as it was, I can see the store's point - because it was a credit transaction there is no way I would want someone to be able to charge something to my account with just a screenshot!

Perhaps there should be a better description/flow chart/diagram on Ikea on how to use the credit account - we do like a nice diagram on MN Grin I don't have any Apple products so can't comment on the update issue but from the number of people on this thread with a similar problem it certainly seems common.

HalzTangz · 29/08/2021 16:21

@Ceci03

Should they be offering finance to people with old phones? Should there be a statement at the beginning that you must have a new phone capable of downloading the app before they let you apply for the finance? Maybe they should say you can only use the card online if you have an old phone, or use click and collect. That's the part I don't understand. They "trust" me enough to let me use the card to order online, or order for click n colletc, but they insist I have to have the app if I go to the till?
Shouldn't the owness be on the person applying for finance I siring thy can do what is required to access the finance.

I have also looked on the ikea website just now and it does say you need the app to show the virtual card. So somewhere along the lines you missed reading this. This is your fault not ikeas.

At that point I personally would have downloaded the app before proceeding with my application ( if I couldnt get the app then I wouldn't bother with the application.

You can be annoyed as much as you like, but it is very clear on the website how to use the virtual card.

Maybe it's time for you to upgrade your phone

AllCatsAreSpecial · 29/08/2021 16:27

A lot of knobs on AIBU today. Do people not realise that being gratuitously nasty to someone who has posted whilst obviously stressed and upset doesn’t make you look cool? It makes you look like a fucking dick.

As if OP was going to haul IKEA over the coals for breaking the equality act?! Give the fuck over.

WhenISnappedAndFarted · 29/08/2021 16:30

@winnieanddaisy

Needing iOS 14.1 doesn't mean you need an I phone 14 . It means you needed to update your existing phone when the update became available . I'm 68 and even I know that when the update is available I just plug in my I phone 11 overnight it will update the latest update available . These happen quite frequently .
The problem is that OP's phone isn't new enough to update to the new software so she can't update past 12 which means she can't update/get the latest apps. It's not a case of the OP not knowing how to update.
HalzTangz · 29/08/2021 16:31

@Ceci03

thanks I never heard of wayfair. Safe to say I will never be going to ikea again. I suppose if I had cash I might - oh no, wait, they dont accept cash ha ha ha!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
They do accept cash, I used cash at the Nottingham store last week
CrazyCatLazy · 29/08/2021 16:41

@HalzTangz I’ve been to leeds and Sheffield in this last week and neither took cash. Not at the main tills of restaurants

That will only work for iPhones up to 3 years old, anything over 3 years the update won't work

I didn't use the restaurant so no idea about there but did use cash at the till points for the purchases I made

Claypotkitchentable · 29/08/2021 17:07

Sounds frustrating but it’s hardly discrimination. Do t blame you for being annoyed. The only think that makes that place bearable is the meatballs.

Ceci03 · 29/08/2021 17:16

@winnieanddaisy I think you don't quite understand how iphones work - I could plug mine in until the cows come home but it will never update higher than 12. Yours updates now, but if you keep if for a few years it will stop updating.

Ceci03 · 29/08/2021 17:23

@HalzTangz thanks for pointing out how thick I am. I think that's been proven on this thread today. You're right. Thick as anything I am.

I looked at FAQ and read the following:-

Ceci03 · 29/08/2021 17:25

I think I'm too thick for this world. God help anyone who hasnt got the latest phone and app know-how.

It's the same wherever I try and do something. Getting my daughter a bank account and set up with internet banking took hours and hours. Everything I try and do is too hard. Cant even claim the discount points at the supermarket now cos I dont have the app. Cant get it.
