or were they being total 'jobsworth' meltdown in Ikea

So bit of a long one but... I applied for the ikea finance thingy, it's no interest so seemed good. Got the virtual card - its like a bank card, and on the website it said you had to show it at the till and then they would key in the numbers. So went on Fri eve, took about 3 hours to do all the shopping, mainly a bed, but you know what it's like there. Got to the till, and the guy said I had to have the app. What app? Ikea finance app, he said. So there I was trying to download this app at the till with people queueing behind me. When it finally downwloaded it said I couldnt use it as it needed 14+ update.

So then a 'manager' came over and said I could "do it" online. So she directed me to this website for the finance company. But I couldnt log in as it said I needed a family card number, but I don't have a family card.

She suggested I go over to the doors to get better reception on wifi. I said it wasnt the wifi that was the problem!

I then tried to login in the ikea finance website, but for some reason my phone kept doing the 'circle of doom'. - When I got home I tried it again, and it still did it, only conclusion is that my phone isn't new enough.

So I begged her, to let me use the card. She said no as she "didnt know it was me". So I had to just leave all the stuff and go home.

So back again on Saturday. I tried logging in on my laptop, which is how I applied for the loan and it worked perfectly. So I rang customer service, and said could I show my laptop at the till, no problem.

When I got there to be sure, I found a manager at the till, and explained the problem. I said I didnt want to do all my shopping and then get to the till and the same thing happened, so could I show her beforehand. OK she said. So I pulled out the laptop but couldnt login!!!!!!!!! I think it was the ikea wifi wasnt strong enough. So I went away and was able to connect using my mobile hotspot. Went back and tried to find her but she kept moving away and chatting to her colleagues and ignoring me. In the end after about 15 mins of me standing there trying to get her attention I went up and said 'excuse me' and tried explaining again. I showed her how I had logged in, and she could see the card etc. But... she said the rule was I had to show it at the till when I got there. I said but what if my laptop plays up and I cant get logged in, you've seen it now, cant you say that I can definitely use it? No, she said. I said that it didn't say anything about that on their website, and shouldnt it be a bit clearer. She said no, it was very clear, and nobody else had ever had a problem. It was getting a bit heated now, well I was getting upset. I asked her a few more times but she wouldnt budge. I jsut burst out crying, I was just at the end of my tether. I felt like screaming at the bloody mindedness of the whole thing. Eventually another manager came over, and he took me to a seat, and he phoned another manager, and then another manager, and eventually they said ok, they had seen me login, and "knew it was me", and if I did my shopping I would be able to use the card.

I'm still upset, stupid I know. I'm thinking as well is this just discrimination against people who don't have top of the range phones? I mean my phone works perfect for everything, just not this for some reason. It's a 12 update I think. So it's not ancient or anything. Surely they need to have some flexibility if the technology is not working?

Thanks for reading if you've gotten this far. I honestly don't know what I could have done different...?? I've tried to contact the bank they set up, Ikano , but impossible to get a response...

Yes, I've just looked at the App reviews. They are terrible!

Annoyedanddissapointed · 29/08/2021 14:20

What a bonkers idea, when we're encouraged not to make unnecessary purchases for environmental reasons.

Well we are talking about spending £££ in ikea on probably a unnecessarily stuff, at least part of it, so this argument doesn't sit tight.

midsomermurderess · 29/08/2021 14:21

And then you come home and write an essay about. Are you sure it wasn't in fact the highlight of your week? Honestly, who otherwise has the energy?

callmeadoctor · 29/08/2021 14:22
@LakieLady
So anyone who wants to use this credit facility has to have a fairly recent phone?

Although I sort of agree with you, how long do you expect developers to work within constraints of old phones? The “latest” iphone that doesn’t support “14+” was released seven years ago, in 2014. Anything released after that supports it.
"constraints of old phones?" ye gods

MaMelon · 29/08/2021 14:24

You know you didn’t have to read the essay or post that snarky reply? Or maybe both of those were the highlight of your week Hmm
JustFrustrated · 29/08/2021 14:25

IKEA do take cash?
They also take credit and debit card.

Also, often times, you can't log in to financial apps/websites on public WiFi

Much ado about nothing

plodalong12 · 29/08/2021 14:28

@callmeadoctor
“Ye gods” what? Hmm Perhaps this page will be an explanation of use to you: www.quora.com/Why-do-some-iOS-apps-only-support-newer-versions-of-iOS

MaMelon · 29/08/2021 14:28

If a store requires its customers to log into its public WiFi in order to access the app required to utilise one of its financial services - then do you see where this is going…??

pleasekeeptotheright · 29/08/2021 14:29

"IKEA do take cash?
They also take credit and debit card."

They weren't taking cash at the weekend just gone.

And they also were happy for the OP to have a hard search on her history without explaining that she would need the most current iPhone update and a family card to access the credit in store.

Bad customer service and a system that is not user friendly at all.

Flatdisco · 29/08/2021 14:35

@ivykaty44

Gosh is it really this complicated to shop at IKEA? It’s put me off going
No it's really not. This is a specific situation re finance. The op does go into quite a bit of detail explaining this.
Norugratsatall · 29/08/2021 14:40

Sympathies OP as I have an iPhone 6 which is not compatible with an operating system higher than 12!

I am now finding this to be s problem with banking apps that I need for work so am probably going to have to upgrade my phone. This annoys me as my phone is perfectly serviceable for everything else. Even if nothing else, it is not environmentally friendly at all to upgrade a phone for this reason.

MaMelon · 29/08/2021 14:43

Absolutely agree with the environmental arguments. No point in IKEA (and other companies) promoting its eco credentials if a simple thing like using its financial services requires the customer to replace a perfectly good mobile phone.

Hadjab · 29/08/2021 14:46

@Ceci03

So I'm thick? *@CorrBlimeyGG*

I can't login to Ikano bank as I don't have a family card number!

I view the card by going online to ikea finance.

Is there a trick to downloading apps that say "you need 14+ to download this app"?

The manager should have directed you to apply for a family card right there - you would have been given a temporary number.

What is 14+?

LakieLady · 29/08/2021 14:46

@ThumbWitchesAbroad

I don't think you're necessarily the one who is having difficulty understanding here, *@Ceci03* It's a bloody nuisance when apps only work with latest updates of OS, I've had the same issues with some store loyalty card apps and no, there is no work around, the only thing you can do is update your phone, sadly.

It's a ploy to ensure that we're constantly updating our phones to the newer more expensive models.

I totally agree. It's built in obsolescence and if this is what Ikea/Ikano are doing, their complicit.

Mind you, their furniture comes with built-in obsolescence, too, their storage furniture only seems to survive being moved 3 or 4 times.

Ashard20 · 29/08/2021 14:47

Can you order online in future and have it delivered? It might be worth the delivery cost?

We did this during lockdown. We were advised to do so after going to a store with click and collect and then getting home to realise items were missing.
The process we had to go though to make contact with customer services online was unfit for purpose. Just finding a phone number took a lot of investigation and no one replied to the emails.
We ended up paying twice, because they were unable to adjust the total from the original order. Then we had to request a refund which took days to arrive.
Then the items were out of stock online so they advised us to go to our nearest store, where they were in stock. We got there to find out that the stock list was incorrect and they were out of stock there too.

The shenanigans we went through to get the missing parts was a complete farce and I would have happily returned the whole thing, except that we couldn't find it anywhere else.
I think there is a thread somewhere on here about Ikea customer services.
I feel your pain @Ceci03 - and incidentally, Apple do render phones unable to receive updates after a certain date, so totally get that you couldn't get anywhere with it in store.

therocinante · 29/08/2021 14:48

@ivykaty44

Gosh is it really this complicated to shop at IKEA? It’s put me off going
No offence to OP but no, it's really not.
Biancadelrioisback · 29/08/2021 14:49

Slide side note
You can get economical phones like this one shop.fairphone.com/gb_en/

It doesn't sound like they were being jobsworths at all, just trying to follow company rules.

LakieLady · 29/08/2021 14:54

I agree. However - what model is your phone? If you still have 12 it may be at least as old as iPhone 6 from 2014? If so YABU to be surprised that the app doesn't work as this is exactly Apple's way of working!

Yep, and that's exactly why I boycott Apple and all their works!

I pretty much boycott Ikea as well though. Most of my furniture is from junk shops and over 100 years old (although I do have Ercol dining chairs from approx 1960s and my bed is a mere youngster, bought new in 1991 lol).

AlmostSummer21 · 29/08/2021 14:58

Well I'm bloody confused about it all tbh. But I expect it's true that free anything is rarely what it seems.

@Ceci03. Roll your eyes a lot at the stupidity of it, then let it go!!

How's the bed?

grafittiartist · 29/08/2021 15:01

Gosh I hate the way that everything needs an app now!
I won't claim my Lidl points because of this- who has time at the checkout to find the app ( restart it), and work our how to use it as you're paying.
Same with Virgin banking. All on an app now- not even a website.
Not all of us have up to date phones.
Sorry Op that sounds very stressful of Ikea.

AlfonsoTheMango · 29/08/2021 15:06

Gosh I hate the way that everything needs an app now!

I agree with you but it seems that that's the way commerce is moving. I have a mobile phone but only because it's needed for things like two-factor authentication.

Darned kids need to get off my lawn.

Hmph. Shakes fist at sky.

LakieLady · 29/08/2021 15:14

I agree, @grafittiartist. And not all of us live in areas with good coverage.

I live in a very hilly town, that is also surrounded by hills. Mobile reception is really erratic and none of the networks I know of work everywhere. There are several areas of town where only some networks function and a few where there is hardly any signal at all on any of them.

Some pub landlords are able to tell you exactly where you need to stand to ring a taxi, and it varies according to your network.

AliensEverywhere · 29/08/2021 15:15

I feel for you, there's a shop I use locally which uses a new loyalty app that gives you discounts. I can't use it because my smart phone is too old to download it and so I miss out on the discounts. I can't afford to buy a new phone.

It's another divide between those with and without.

winnieanddaisy · 29/08/2021 15:27

Needing iOS 14.1 doesn't mean you need an I phone 14 . It means you needed to update your existing phone when the update became available . I'm 68 and even I know that when the update is available I just plug in my I phone 11 overnight it will update the latest update available . These happen quite frequently .

AmperoBlue · 29/08/2021 15:32

I don’t even have a mobile phone so I’m totally screwed. I gave an iPad and laptop but apps still require a mobile to check “ it’s you”.

The woman at the bank call centre suggested I use my sons mobile number…..how the heck does that prove it’s me!
My landline accepts messages so they can send passcodes or email.

Nope, got to be on a mobile. Nuts. And after all the security, two factor authentication the bank still charged me twice for airline tickets this month. So still making errors in the new and improved upgraded system.
