or were they being total 'jobsworth' meltdown in Ikea

So bit of a long one but... I applied for the ikea finance thingy, it's no interest so seemed good. Got the virtual card - its like a bank card, and on the website it said you had to show it at the till and then they would key in the numbers. So went on Fri eve, took about 3 hours to do all the shopping, mainly a bed, but you know what it's like there. Got to the till, and the guy said I had to have the app. What app? Ikea finance app, he said. So there I was trying to download this app at the till with people queueing behind me. When it finally downwloaded it said I couldnt use it as it needed 14+ update.

So then a 'manager' came over and said I could "do it" online. So she directed me to this website for the finance company. But I couldnt log in as it said I needed a family card number, but I don't have a family card.

She suggested I go over to the doors to get better reception on wifi. I said it wasnt the wifi that was the problem!

I then tried to login in the ikea finance website, but for some reason my phone kept doing the 'circle of doom'. - When I got home I tried it again, and it still did it, only conclusion is that my phone isn't new enough.

So I begged her, to let me use the card. She said no as she "didnt know it was me". So I had to just leave all the stuff and go home.

So back again on Saturday. I tried logging in on my laptop, which is how I applied for the loan and it worked perfectly. So I rang customer service, and said could I show my laptop at the till, no problem.

When I got there to be sure, I found a manager at the till, and explained the problem. I said I didnt want to do all my shopping and then get to the till and the same thing happened, so could I show her beforehand. OK she said. So I pulled out the laptop but couldnt login!!!!!!!!! I think it was the ikea wifi wasnt strong enough. So I went away and was able to connect using my mobile hotspot. Went back and tried to find her but she kept moving away and chatting to her colleagues and ignoring me. In the end after about 15 mins of me standing there trying to get her attention I went up and said 'excuse me' and tried explaining again. I showed her how I had logged in, and she could see the card etc. But... she said the rule was I had to show it at the till when I got there. I said but what if my laptop plays up and I cant get logged in, you've seen it now, cant you say that I can definitely use it? No, she said. I said that it didn't say anything about that on their website, and shouldnt it be a bit clearer. She said no, it was very clear, and nobody else had ever had a problem. It was getting a bit heated now, well I was getting upset. I asked her a few more times but she wouldnt budge. I jsut burst out crying, I was just at the end of my tether. I felt like screaming at the bloody mindedness of the whole thing. Eventually another manager came over, and he took me to a seat, and he phoned another manager, and then another manager, and eventually they said ok, they had seen me login, and "knew it was me", and if I did my shopping I would be able to use the card.

I'm still upset, stupid I know. I'm thinking as well is this just discrimination against people who don't have top of the range phones? I mean my phone works perfect for everything, just not this for some reason. It's a 12 update I think. So it's not ancient or anything. Surely they need to have some flexibility if the technology is not working?

Thanks for reading if you've gotten this far. I honestly don't know what I could have done different...?? I've tried to contact the bank they set up, Ikano , but impossible to get a response...

I don’t get what you mean by 14+ phone??

Ceci03 · 29/08/2021 13:44

@Bluntness100ess I'm not stupid, I know what discrimination is!

What term would be the correct one to describe what I experienced would you say? Unlucky? Poor? Stupid? Thick? I'm interested as I'd like to express it correctly.

I don't have an iPhone but I believe 14 is the latest os? You'll be able to see the minimum os requirements in the Apple Store.

You can join Ikea Family on the app, it will generate a membership number.

I didn't call you thick. More than you failed to read the information they gave you.

Ceci03 · 29/08/2021 13:48

@SheABitSpicyToday so when I try to download the app for either Ikea finance, or Ikano bank, my phone says

"This application requires IOS 14.1 or later."

My phone is 12 I think , and won't update any further. Its because it's old. But it's not that old!

PS If someone knows a way around this I'd be thrilled, as there are a few apps I'd like but cant get... Including NHS notify!

OK @CorrBlimeyGG so I'm not that stupid - when I got home, I applied for a Family Card online, and got the number.

However I still cant login to IKANO bank or get the app.... I've contacted them, but like a lot of online banks, it's virtually impossible to get a response as your message is sent to a generic email box.

PS @CorrBlimeyGGlimey I coulnd't apply for a family card on the app as I CANT GET THE APP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

@Ceci03

I tried to login to ikea finance online on my phone but just got the 'circle of doom'. I tried on different browsers, but couldnt get on.
But what did you show him when you very first tried to pay? That's what I don't understand. You arrive at the till with your stuff - how did you show him your virtual card so that he could know that you had this loan and key in the numbers he needed to key in? Because you say in your OP that you didn't try to log in to the Ikea finance website until later, so what did you have ready to show at the till at the point of first trying to pay?
SheABitSpicyToday · 29/08/2021 13:51

I’m sorry but it’s not ikeas fault you have an old phone.

Ceci03 · 29/08/2021 13:53

I showed a screenshot that I had taken from my laptop and sent to my phone. It showed my name, that I was logged in, and it showed the virtual card.

OP posts:
MissScuito · 29/08/2021 13:54

Could you not have just screenshot it when you had it working and shown that at the tills?

Jaxhog · 29/08/2021 13:55

Shop somewhere else. Wayfair is pretty good.

This assumption that everyone has the latest Tech, and then the disbelief or ignorance of an alternative when you don't is very frustrating. And I'm a technophile.

CorrBlimeyGG · 29/08/2021 13:55

You showed a photo of the virtual card.

Ikea won't accept photos of physical cards either.

ivykaty44 · 29/08/2021 13:55

Gosh is it really this complicated to shop at IKEA? It’s put me off going

Ceci03 · 29/08/2021 13:56

Should they be offering finance to people with old phones? Should there be a statement at the beginning that you must have a new phone capable of downloading the app before they let you apply for the finance? Maybe they should say you can only use the card online if you have an old phone, or use click and collect. That's the part I don't understand. They "trust" me enough to let me use the card to order online, or order for click n colletc, but they insist I have to have the app if I go to the till?

You don't need latest tech if you aren't wanting a credit🤷🏻

No, but it IS their fault that they don't make the tech requirements clearer, or that they don't train their staff properly!
MadeOfStarStuff · 29/08/2021 13:57

YABU

A screenshot isn’t the same as a virtual card.

LawnFever · 29/08/2021 13:58
@Ceci03, for it to be discrimination it needs to be based on a protected characteristic. What is your protected characteristic that makes it discrimination?
In a legal sense yes but the concept of discrimination doesn’t have to be legally binding, you can just discriminate against anything in the sense of the word.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 29/08/2021 13:58

I don't think you're necessarily the one who is having difficulty understanding here, @Ceci03
It's a bloody nuisance when apps only work with latest updates of OS, I've had the same issues with some store loyalty card apps and no, there is no work around, the only thing you can do is update your phone, sadly.

It's a ploy to ensure that we're constantly updating our phones to the newer more expensive models.

Ceci03 · 29/08/2021 13:59

@MissScuito OMG thank you so much, you understand... I have felt like I was going insane the last few days.

THat's exactly what I did - on the first day I showed them a screenshot from my laptop. The second day I brought in the laptop, and logged in (eventually), and showed them that. I said if I saved the screen shot could i use it at the till, but they said no, I had to login AT THE TILL. When paying.

The equalities act only applies to protected characteristics and reasonable adjustments can only be requested for those but to use the word discriminate in the context the OP has is fine and normal. It just means that a process or situation etc is less available to a particular group. That could be smartphone none users or those under 5ft tall or those with children

Fubitch · 29/08/2021 14:00

It's bullshit op! The management should have been there to make it happen for you.
