And it's not after a relative, she just likes it. Is this it for us over 40s? Are there going to be loads of little Lynns and Sharons running round soon?

What other names are we about to see!?

OP posts:
PollyValent · 29/08/2021 12:38

I have come across a couple of little Joannas.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 29/08/2021 12:38

I like all these names. I know a baby Alan (actually now he's 3) and several little Martins and Sarahs. I consider most of these names to be classic. My rule is if it's a saint's name it's alright.

And yes there is a St Alan and a St Kevin.

NeverTalkToStrangers · 29/08/2021 12:40

Victoria Coren Mitchell’s six year old is called Barbara. It was much remarked upon at the time that they were reclaiming the name slightly ahead of the natural cycle.

MaMelon · 29/08/2021 12:40

When I see the ‘I want my child’s name to stand out’ threads on here I think if the OP was really brave they’d go ho for one of the names listed on here!

Carol
Karen
Michelle
Denise
Pauline
Sharon
Tracy
Gillian
Alison
Fiona
Natalie
Lucy
Joanne
Gail
Susan

All girls I was at school with in the seventies - names you really don’t hear anymore.

Kiduknot · 29/08/2021 12:41

@Hellotoallmyfans

What about Rita and Sue? Can you imagine having two little girls and calling them Rita and Sue and not realising the connotations? Grin
And a baby brother called Bob!
midsomermurderess · 29/08/2021 12:41

A propos of not very much, I really like Martin.

WandaVision2 · 29/08/2021 12:43

@maddiemookins16mum

Jane, Hazel and Ruth…..all born this year in our Church family to daughters of parents born in the 60s.
How are people born in the 60’s giving birth to babies this year? My sister was born in 69 and she’s over 50
Insert1x20p · 29/08/2021 12:43

Started school in 1980 and the girls in my class were:

Rachel
Emma (in secondary school 6 out of 20 girls were Emma's)
Anna
Gemma
Hannah
Suzannah
Sarah (multiple)
Diana
Victoria
Deborah (love this name- got to be due a comeback)
Julia
Louise
Terri
Sherree
Melanie (quite like Mel as a name)
Mandy

Notgotanyidea · 29/08/2021 12:43

My DD wants to call her future children Shelia and Nigel. She is 14.

FedNlanders · 29/08/2021 12:44

My daughters name is mentioned here. 3 of my girls have 80s names.

WandaVision2 · 29/08/2021 12:44

Sorry, @maddiemookins16mum. I think I might have misread your post

TroysMammy · 29/08/2021 12:45

I doubt mine will make a comeback. It's hardly mentioned on threads and I can't imagine a little my name running about.

Laney39 · 29/08/2021 12:47

Claire
Emma
Louise
Lorraine
Vicky
Gemma
Katie

Lots of them in my year and you don't hear them much now.

Cryalot2 · 29/08/2021 12:48

Don't like Sharon, Karen or Tracy.
Nor Glenda, Petula, Edith Yvonne or Pansy.
But no doubt they will make a comeback.
So many names Dora, Martha, Pricilla, Carole Kathleen Veronica Olga Frances

Flowerlane · 29/08/2021 12:49

I know a little girl called Rita! No Sue though Grin
Thomasina79 · 29/08/2021 12:49

Sally?

When I was at school it was overwhelmingly Linda, Susan, Janet, or John, Richard. In fact there were books for children learning to read with characters called Janet and John (which were horribly sexist, Janet helps mummy to wash up and John helps daddy to wash the car).

My late MIL said it was because after the Second World War and all the horrors people wanted down to earth names and wanted to get away from the Victorian/Edwardian type names.

But what goes around comes around!

AmyandPhilipfan · 29/08/2021 12:50

I wonder when Kayleigh/Kylie/Keeley will come back. I was born in early 80s and there were several girls with those names a few years below me at school.

I went to school with loads of girls called Donna and Nicola. And boys called Christopher and Paul.

One name I can’t imagine coming back - Wayne

Clawdy · 29/08/2021 12:50

I remember reading an article which told you how to update your name if you have a 1950s one! Basically add an "a", so Ann becomes Anna, Christine is Christina, or change one or two letters, so Susan is Suzanne, Joan is Joanne, Jean can be Gina! I met someone called Bel last year, I said what an unusual name for someone our age, and she said "I'm really Beryl, but hated it!" Clever!

CaveMum · 29/08/2021 12:51

I’m an early 80s child, my name was popular for a short while but according to ONS fell out of the Top 100 in about 1985 and hasn’t returned since. I had a look a few years ago and only about 18 baby girls had been blessed with the name that year Wink

Growing up I remember multiple Tracey’s, Kevin’s, Naomi’s and Kelly’s in my classes but haven’t come across any babies with those names since. I wonder if they will make a comeback?

MargaretThursday · 29/08/2021 12:52

I don't think Sarahs been gone that long. It was one of the potential names with had for dd1 and discounted for dd2 as there were so many Sarahs around-and that was in 2003.

BobGalaxy · 29/08/2021 12:53

My name is of the Julie/Donna/Tracey variety and I was born late 80s, so it's just odd and out of date on me - I sound like I should be 20 years older than I am. My mum named me after her cousin.

I know of: a Veronica who is 11, a Brenda of about 13 and a baby Diana! All born to parents originally from abroad so different connotations I guess

Greyhare · 29/08/2021 12:53

@Laska2Meryls

Susan Janet Stephanie Elaine Jacqueline Caroline Judith Melinda Elizabeth Margaret Pamela Penelope Rachel ...all my age group and in my class ( and one of those is my name)
Were you born in the 70's
Pollythecat15 · 29/08/2021 12:55

I think this generation of names is gradually creeping back in.
I've heard a few names being called for little ones recently - Caroline, Helen and Jenny.
I think it's nice that they are coming back.
There are quite a few names from my era that I love the sound of but just associate with too many girls who bullied me through high school.
I think hearing little ones with those names will help me get rid of that association.

Boredhimtodeath · 29/08/2021 12:55

Helen, Jane, Simon and Mark

Very outing but both my parents names, 1 sibling and 1 cousin!

FlumpsAreShit · 29/08/2021 12:55

@MaMelon I'm 30 (school in 90s/00s) and know loads of Natalies, Lucys and Alisons. My 26 yo SIL is a Fiona.

I think ones like Anne, Rebecca, Elizabeth etc are quite timeless but I can't imagine calling a baby Tracy, Stacey, Sharon or Karen. I know an Iris and Mabel under 12. Still waiting to come across a baby Brian 🤣
