Have any celebrities gone missing?!

No AIBU just posting here as more people use this topic.

I know being famous means you cannot leave your old life and start again like some missing people must.

Some people just vanish though don't they? Taking no money or ID.

Can people just "disappear? I know a lot of these people will have been murdered and no evidence found but how come it hadn't happened to anyone famous.

Had a drink tonight abs I can't really put it into words what I'm trying to say.

I was about to say Olivia Newton-John's husband. But also re Duffy, she went missing for ages, but as has been said, she was sexually assaulted very badly, and went into hiding because of this. Then came back out a couple of years ago and told us what happened.

Have to agree with a pp though, that the coca-cola ad she did was bloody awful. It portrayed her as a massive worldwide music icon who was adored by billions, when in fact, she was still rather new in the industry, and has only had about 5 or 6 hits and 1 successful album. She was presented in that ad as if she was Madonna or Michael Jackson. Not a 6 hit wonder with 1 successful album.

She was good, and her music was very good IMO, but she got too big too fast, and this is a recipe for disaster for many. I'm so sorry for what she went through with her sexual assault, but I feel her career was on the skids before that happened. And it was that awful ad that contributed towards the demise of her career.

Re, the suicide thing, I think people prefer 'died by suicide' or 'took their own life,' as saying COMMITTED suicide' is old terminology and is frowned upon because suicide used to be classed as a 'sin' and a 'crime.' I don't think it is by the way, but it used to be regarded as wrong and a sin. Hence the word 'committed.' It's quite outdated now, as it is actually quite offensive.

TheSloaneRanger · 21/08/2021 11:05

Wow, this is an interesting thread. I'd never thought about it before but there are loads

Balgoresboy · 21/08/2021 11:06

''Jason Orange from Take That has disappeared....just doesn't want the famous life anymore 😕❤️''

meh apart from mark, gary and Robbie the other 2 were much less publicised anyway and pretty much faded into oblivion after the band's split. I'd say they were pretty much very anonymous every day people for the most part after the band's break up.

Over600Ecalypts · 21/08/2021 11:22

Paolo Nuttini seems to have stepped back from the music industry, much like Bobbie Gentry and John Deacon. Even Lewis Capaldi tried to find him. Although I keep an eye out for a new album or a tour of tiny Scottish villages or anything, it is highly likely that I've missed a big annoucement!

northbacchus · 21/08/2021 11:27

Xavier Dupont de Ligonnès, though not particularly a celebrity. Such odd circumstances around that.

SpnBaby1967 · 21/08/2021 11:33

Didnt one of the members of Evanescence go missing and since presumed dead.

mam0918 · 21/08/2021 11:38

Not quite what you are talking about as Im sure the govenment tax man will know where is lol and she is apparently not dead but Bobbie Gentry (true icon at the forfront of women in music in the 60s) suddenly and completely 'vanished' from the pubic eye and her celebrity life about 40+ years ago.

No one really knows why she did it - guess she just got sick of being famous.

Elderflower14 · 21/08/2021 11:49

Juliette Gruber who played Jo Rowan on Heartbeat didn't act again after she left the series.... Apparently she left to live in southern France.

Welcometotheterrorzone · 21/08/2021 11:55

@northbacchus yes!! I think he's in the US, what an utterly heartless man. These family annihilators are such narcissists, their wives and children have no right to live because they can't deal with the shame of bad business decisions.

Yourstupidityexhaustsme · 21/08/2021 12:15
Adolf Hitler? His death was never proved to the satisfaction of everyone - and many of his hench men also vanished

Some of them ended up in the USA:

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Paperclip
South America too.

They were given passage and a change of identity by the Argentinian govt too.

History is written by the victors, truly. Of the high ranking nazis a minute amount ever faced prosecution.

RevolvingPivot · 21/08/2021 12:22

I couldn't remember the Duffy advert. I've just found it on YouTube. What is it that so bad? The cringe? The fact that everyone noticed her?

Ok confession time, I was only joking about Banksy.

But I woke up and the more I thought about it the more I thought its not the worst theory that ever existed.

Certainly holds more than Art Attack man! Grin

Forstarters · 21/08/2021 12:39

I'm not actually drunk not drank in years but I use that as an excuse because of my autism abs dyslexia

Eh? You said you were drunk but you’re not. Then get annoyed about it?

Amdone123 · 21/08/2021 12:54

@Newhorizon21, thank you for posting that. Suicide is a matter close to my heart unfortunately.
I love this thread. It's really interesting.

Cattenberg · 21/08/2021 12:59

I thought Banksy’s real name was Robin Gunningham? Or was that story wrong? It made sense to me at the time. “Banks” being his surname was too obvious. But a jokey nickname based on “Robbing Banks”? I know several men with those types of nicknames.

AutistGoth · 21/08/2021 13:42

Plenty of celebrities have gone missing. Just a few for you to look up:

Jodi Huisentruit - a North American news reporter. Most likely abducted by a stalker. Flowers

Barbara Newhall Follet - North American child prodigy novelist. Walked out on her husband and was never seen again.

Jim Sullivan - a folk rock musician.

Connie Converse - Also a musician.

"Sweet Jimmy" Robinson - Very sad story. He was a boxer and one of Mohammed Ali's early opponents. It was only when a boxing enthusiast wanted to track down all of Ali's opponents and get their autographs that they realised that Sweet Jimmy hadn't been seen since 1979 and at that point, he was living on the streets. Sad

Sean Flynn - the son of Errol. Disappeared in Vietnam whilst working as a war correspondent.

Jasmine Duhanna - Not very well known in the Western World, but she is an Indian actress; best known for her work in horror movies. She has had to go into hiding after coming to the attention of one Dawood Ibrahim: a sort of Indian Mafia boss. No one knows where she is, but she is apparently still alive. Understandably, she is lying very low.

I have a bit of a morbid fascination with unsolved disappearances (not just people, anything that mysteriously vanished, including films, songs etc), hence why I could name a few unaccounted for celebrities off the top of my head! Smile

BoredZelda · 21/08/2021 13:46

I'm not actually drunk not drank in years but I use that as an excuse because of my autism abs dyslexia

Because it’s better to be thought of as a drunk than having autism or dyslexia?

HoppingPavlova · 21/08/2021 14:15

They showed the meat grinder in the show and it was tiny. It would have been a ridiculous task to chop him up.

I didn’t see it on Tiger King, it was another documentary specifically about his disappearance, with investigations initiated by his family (not Carol obviously). The grinder they showed was huge. You would basically get a deer, chainsaw it into quarters and put them through. Supposedly it was forensically examined but really what you find a few years after and with it being in use? I agree being taken out by cartel if he was drug related Ning could he every bit as probable however.

Amdone123 · 21/08/2021 14:22

@AutistGoth, I'm the same. I find it fascinating. I watch a lot of crime ; including Disappeared. I always enjoy them but it's bittersweet as I always feel so frustrated for the families. When someone dies, you can slowly seek closure. When someone disappears, it must be like being buried alive.

ToffeeNotCoffee · 21/08/2021 17:33

When someone disappears, it must be like being buried alive.

It is. I have no personal experience of it. However, I've listened to a lot of Missing Persons stories on You Tube. The ones that miss them are in a living hell for the rest of their lives.

I heard a mother cry like a child because her child was long term missing.

Sadly a lot of missing people are dead. A lot of people have personal reasons for choosing to go missing. That's if they are not a victim of foul play.

I'm just fed up if having to say I'm autistic / dyslexic every time I post. I have to say something as when I write something I'm told I must be on glue or thick as people don't always understand me.

A lot of people have personal reasons for choosing to go missing.

Esther Beadle's account of going missing and the aftermath is worth a read.
