No AIBU just posting here as more people use this topic.

I know being famous means you cannot leave your old life and start again like some missing people must.

Some people just vanish though don't they? Taking no money or ID.

Can people just "disappear? I know a lot of these people will have been murdered and no evidence found but how come it hadn't happened to anyone famous.

Had a drink tonight abs I can't really put it into words what I'm trying to say.

I understand that John Deacon is still considered a full member of Queen - just not an 'active' one any more, I suppose. I read something saying that he was still involved behind the scenes, still a part of Queen, having his say in the band's financial decisions etc. - I don't know if this is still the case. By contrast, they've had happy collaborations with Adam Lambert and others, but it's always Queen AND AL - nobody else has been included in the band itself.

He was always the introverted one and I think he found being on stage much harder than the others. This is nothing more than my theory, but I wonder if he partly saw Freddie as a vicarious outward expression of his own songs and ideas - the public 'voice' who spoke on behalf of him (as well as himself and the others, of course). With Freddie gone, Brian and Roger were still confident outgoing performers and happy to step up to the limelight, but I wonder if John might have seen Freddie's passing as also signifying the 'death' of his own (John's) public side too, thus marking the definitive end of his own career in showbiz. Just my ponderings, as I say.

XelaM · 23/08/2021 11:49

I don't know if this has been mentioned yet, but one of the most famous and mysterious disappearance cases is the disappearance of Jimmy Hoffa.

I hated "The Irishman" film, but the story itself is fascinating and it's still unresolved

Spidey66 · 23/08/2021 11:56

@MessOfEyelinerAndSpraypaint

I had a feeling lovely Richey Edwards would be the first to be mentioned. Nicky Wire says. "You've got hope on the one side, and clarity or closure on the other. And sometimes you want closure, but to get closure you have to kill hope." I still recall those awful days, weeks, cannot believe its been 26 years & feel desperately sad for his bereft sister Rachel. I believe he used his urge to disappear into nothingness, to create an enduring myth for the band. Thus he laid the trail of 'Disappearing' clues to feel useful one last time from the corner he felt backed into. But that's just my opinion. As someone who was & remains a fervent Manics fan, the pain never lessens, and as I've had my own friend & ex bro in law vanish, it really is the hope against logic that kills. Interesting thread op.
Are his parents still alive?I know they were a close family and it would be a shame if they died not knowing what happened to him.

From what I know of Richey, he appeared to suffer from an Emotionally Unstable PD. (I'm a mental health nurse so knowledge and experience in this area). My reasons for suggesting this is because of his well documented history of low mood, deliberate self harm, eating disorders and alcohol abuse. All these difficulties would suggest this diagnosis. Many people with such a diagnosis have had a traumatic childhood and it's often seen as a form of complex PTSD. However what's off with Richey is that contrarily, his childhood and family relationships were very stable. He had good relationships with his parents and sister. His parents were hairdressers who ran a salon, so not rich but not poor. He was extremely bright and excelled academically. It appears he was shy but had a network of friends.

It's all odd.

AutistGoth · 23/08/2021 13:18

@InFiveMins pointing me in the direction of that mysterious song has led ne to discover a treasure trove of alternative 80s (or 80s inspired) mysterious forgotten songs of the Goth Rock/Electronica/Indie/New Wave genre and I could not be happier.

A thousand thank yous! SmileFlowersCake

RevolvingPivot · 23/08/2021 13:41

@Cakeofdoom

Slightly off topic but how do people go into witness protection without telling their families ? Are their deaths faked or something ? I have a friend who died in odd circumstances, inquest not made public that I can see. My friend once alluded to knowing some people who were Gangsters or Mafia esque who were involved in high level drug production but it was being laundered through public services and friend was pretty scared...all very mysterious. I've often wondered if my friend went into witness protection instead of the alleged suicide...dunno...maybe I've had too much coffee 😂
That's very interesting. This must happen lots. To their friends abs family they are either "lost" or dead??? For example what if Claudia Lawrence was in Witness Protection? They can't tell her father as he would want to see her and her cover would probably be blown.

How do the police stop the family circulating missing posters or sharing posts on social media?

Never thought about that.

@spidey66 hi! Sadly both Graham & Sherry, Richey"s parents, have died in the last few years. His sister carries the family pain now. And the hope that her brother will be remembered as the gifted writer, creative maverick, as well as one quarter of the brilliant Manics #1.
Your insight - and thank you, your chosen profession is essential but sorely undervalued - you are right, there was definitely something medical underpinning Richey"s early self-medication, then stints in nhs ward & the priory. Borderline personality disorder has been suggested by a few over the years? I don't know. Anorexia, depression, I've suffered both myself & empathise with the degree to which they take over life.
The belief that he wouldn't leave his parents, his sister, and the band, in the agonising stasis of not knowing all these years is how my head quietly accepts he probably went over the bridge, or died soo after. But without a body... Hope kills.
If he intended on bequeathing the band a notoriety, a myth, to complement their undoubted talent driven success... He succeeded.

@RevolvingPivot I'm very sorry to tell you that Peter Lawrence passed away without ever finding out what happened to Claudia. Sad

Not a celebrity, but Andrew Gosden who you mentioned earlier sticks in my mind too. Very tragic. Sad

dayswithaY · 23/08/2021 15:02

As regards witness protection, there was a really interesting episode of the podcast "Criminal" where they interviewed the man who was for many years, in charge of settling people into witness protection. You are allowed to tell a small number of close family members, but they are sworn to secrecy. You cannot disclose your location, but you get a choice of two or three states to live in (this is in America).

Weirdly, most people in the program get to keep their first name as apparently it's really hard to learn how to answer to "Steve" when all your life, you've answered to "John" and lots of people are middle aged and over when they enter the program.

The family members who know that you are in the program presumably keep quiet in order to protect your life, it's safer if people think you're dead. So no, Claudia Lawrence's dad would not have been left to put up missing posters for years if she had entered such a program. He would have been given a subtle clue or two by now.

MessOfEyelinerAndSpraypaint · 23/08/2021 15:36

@spidey66 I was mulling what you said about the seemingly untroubled childhood: richey venerated his youth, the innocence. That in itself creates an imbalance, & he was known to have spoken darkly about 'being forced to go to Chapel til age 13', & his undoubted brilliant intellect causing an out - of-kilter sense within his peer group (and family). Feeling guilt for still feeling human emotions of melancholy despite, in the eyes of the war generation & their children-his parents-, having everything.
He clearly suffered extreme anxiety, dating back before he joined the band.
He was so gifted and so troubled. He is still missed 💔

XelaM · 23/08/2021 15:37

My family were actually friends with a very famous Russian gangster (they didn't know the extent of his involvement in the mafia at the time) who faked his own death. This is completely true. He was pronounced dead in a car accident, but decades later we discovered he is actually alive but abroad and under a different name.
@FlorenceWintle the accounts conflict a bit, but as best I can work it out they found his own car at a service station near the bridge. He didn't take it the whole way . He appeared to have used his own car to return to his flat in Cardiff briefly then lived in it for a few days, maybe while he made his final decision. The taxi driver said he remembered the guy because he overpaid by a lot and told him to keep the change, I guess because he knew he wouldn't be needing it. Very sad.
I used to go out with the son of that very taxi driver. Said Richey was very polite, and yes, he overpaid by a LOT.

I'm so sad that his parents died before they got any answers about his disappearance. The pain they must've lived in... Jesus wept.

iloveeverykindofcat · 23/08/2021 16:53

@BeautyGoesToBenidorm yes, terribly sad. Celebrity deaths don't usually bother me but I'm a big Manics fan and its all very local to me, I know the places they grew up and so on, and his parents just seemed like a nice, normal, working class Welsh family.

Haven't seen Mr Blobby for a few decades.

Spidey66 · 23/08/2021 23:12

I think the saying "there s a thin line between genius and madness" while very un pc was written for Richey Edwards.

I'm fascinated by him. The story about him carving 4 REAL into his arm with a razor blade while being interviews by Steve Lamacq is disturbing.

I’ve thought of another one

Gandhi

Made one great film then never been seen again

Tinselandlights · 24/08/2021 09:09

I used to go out with a friend of John Deacon's son.

There's no mystery about John Deacon, he just struggled with depression and wanted out of the limelight. He is obviously incredibly wealthy so has no need to work, and just prefers being at home. He had a wife and young kids when he was actively touring in Queen and wanted to be more present.

He lives in west London, in fact I saw him crossing the road a couple of years ago and he very occasionally gets papped.

@Elderflower14 I wonder whether the choir had more publicity and therefore help / money. I was actually in shock when they appeared on BGT. Those poor finalise. I wondered whether it crossed Simons mind to offer assistance?
