No snorers allowed camping

Just that.

Having finally managed to get to sleep on our mysteriously but persistently deflating air mattress someone in the field next door wakes me up making a noise like a food processor being turned on and off. I have young kids in the tent with me and older kids in the tent text door so I can’t wear eye plugs. It’s a family campsite so it’s not just me who won’t be able to wear ear plugs. Just don’t go camping near others if you snore. They must know they snore because they’re not pitched up alone, so their party must all have come prepared with earplugs.

YABU camping is for everyone, you can’t discriminate
YANBU camping is not for someone who makes a really loud noise all night long to show off how well they’re sleeping while stopping anyone else from getting what rest they can

It would take every ounce of self control not to locate the source of that sound and boot that tent repeatedly. I already suffer with bouts of insomnia, so if I had to hear someone's slack adenoids rattling all fucking night, I would definitely be incensed.

Blackcat333 · 21/08/2021 18:41

@StoppinBy

Unfortunately YABU but I totally get it and would be knocking on the tent and running away so they are hopefully kept awake long enough for me to get to sleep.

Snorers are the worst and bring out my desire to suffocate them lol

This made me roar with laughter 😂. I go camping and all children should be told to stop laughing so loud!
Marriedatfirstyear · 21/08/2021 19:00

I've struggled as we have a few nests of magpies not far from our window.
I've found these to work well as they are soft so don't press hard on your ears. You can also push them further down for complete silence or not so deep so you could still hear. I've also found wearing one helps if you're worried about hearing kids, alarms etc.

I'd prefer it if the party tents went to Ibiza rather than drinking from lunchtime then having loud conversations, laughing like they're watching the world's best comedians at the top of their lungs and playing sh#t music til gone midnight, but you know what? It's a free country and at least snorers can't help the noise they make

DanceItOut · 21/08/2021 19:27

YANU I’m afraid. Yes it’s annoying but it is what it is. Camping is for everyone and is not going to always be perfectly silent. Also people are actually more likely to snore while camping because they are more likely to lie on their backs due to the stiffness of the ground, camp beds, air beds etc makes it less comfortable lying on your side. We’ve camped for years and years and had all sorts of noise from snoring to crying kids and drunk shouting adults and barking dogs. It’s still fun in the end.

MolyHolyGuacamole · 21/08/2021 19:29

YABU to expect this from camping, you hear every single noise. I'd suggest something with 4 walls next time.

I haven’t got any adenoids. Or tonsils. I sleep on my side. I have snored since I was a child because I have a receding jaw, a very soft palate and narrow nasal passages but if I was sleeping near you I’d have a couple of bottles of wine and sleep on my back.
RoyalAlbertHallSinger · 21/08/2021 19:48

I don't sleep if it’s noisy so I opt not to go camping. My problem, not anyone else’s. I can’t expect other people to be silent so….

mussymummy · 21/08/2021 20:02

Oh just fuck right off plenty people snore. I bet you have plenty other habits that drive others insane so stop being so fucking rude and discriminating. If you don't like it don't go fucking camping. Maybe a week in a panic room or something where you can't hear any external noise apart from your own bullshit?

DillonPanthersTexas · 21/08/2021 20:11

mussymummy

Are you okay hun?

TSSDNCOP · 21/08/2021 20:14

Thanks OP, another reason why I as a snorer should never camp

LoisLane66 · 21/08/2021 20:17

That's why singledom is a boon.

ilikecheesecake · 21/08/2021 20:18

Get a sleep app on your phone to drown all the noise put. I have mine on full blast every night as oh a snorer. Away camping now and I wouldn't sleep without it

TSSDNCOP · 21/08/2021 20:21

I am recalling a night camping in the canyons behind Malibu, which is bear country.

I woke from a wine induced deep slumber and lie awake for 10 minutes an hour of rigid panic thinking there was a bear right behind my head outside the tent. I was waiting for a claw to draw down the canvas and scalp me.

Then my beloved best friend rolled over and the noise stopped. Bloody polyps should not be allowed in bear infested mountain areas.

WhatsTheEffingPoint · 21/08/2021 20:47

I run a campsite and I have had people complain about snoring, I kindly explain there'd not a lot I can do, remind them that tents aren't soundproof so noise goes both ways.

For everyone saying move pitches, most campsites are full to bursting, so alot of the time there is nowhere else to move to.

Camping isn't the relaxing holiday everyone thinks it.

Letsbekindplease · 21/08/2021 20:58

I am a terrible snorer and probably worse when camping. Nothing will stop me snoring or camping and partner is happy to take the blame for it if anyone says anything.

frerecoler · 21/08/2021 21:06

DH snores and it is a big issue but he can't help it and has tried so many things over the years.

We love camping and camp a lot! Sorry, but if you sleep in a tent, you sleep with the noises of outside. You have to learn to deal with it.
Otherwise you take a caravan.

I once camped in a tent at Flamingoland. Goodness gracious, that was an experience. DH snoring was the least of my problems. People seemed to think that the camping ground was a nightclub, and security did nothing. From then on, we always rented a caravan there.

chesirecat99 · 21/08/2021 21:09

Approx 40% of people in the UK snore... Franklyfrost

VK456 · 21/08/2021 21:16

I am acutely embarrassed by my snoring and am well aware of the problems it causes. There are opportunities I chose not take because of it. Believe me, it’s not something I chose to do and has only become a problem as I’ve got older. I live alone and am too distressed by it to enter into a relationship.

Msgiggles30 · 21/08/2021 21:23

This is why I refuse to go camping more than once every few years because I spend the whole time awake and then grumpy so can only cope with it very very spaced out 😂. I usually say I'm giving up and going in the car at like 2am. I'm surprised there hasn't been any cases of someone smothering another with a pillow on campsites WinkGrin

Carycy · 21/08/2021 21:32

VK I am so sorry that you feel that way. Please don’t let it hold you back from starting a relationship. Like I said up thread I am quite a loud snorer. But it has never caused much of an issue in my relationships. Most men I have dated have been totally accepting of it. They take the piss but affectionately. Maybe I have been lucky. In fact the only people who have ever made me feel bad about it are other women.

Endoftether2000 · 21/08/2021 21:55

Well said Mother of Gremlins 👍

DillonPanthersTexas · 21/08/2021 22:04

For everyone saying move pitches, most campsites are full to bursting, so alot of the time there is nowhere else to move to.

However there are a number of campsites that are deliberately low density with plenty of space between pitches. Sure you a pay a bit more but I quite like not being shoehorned in like a music festival. Nobody is expecting absolute silence but with a bit of careful planning you can find a site where there is a better chance that the only noises you hear at night are those from nature rather then a stag do or Mr and Mrs Snorey Bollocks.

Wrenna · 21/08/2021 22:06

Yanbu!

ilikecheesecake · 21/08/2021 23:12

Fuck me I have a snorer right now in a tent at the back of us and someone watching Tv at the side. Sleep app on full blast to drown them out but can still hear them. I go camping a lot and never had this. Feel for you op. I won't be getting no sleep tonight either.
