What does your average day look like? When do you fit in exercise?!

Just that really… what does your average weekday look like?! All I seem to do is work! What do you do after work? What exercise do you fit in and when?

UserStillatLarge · 18/08/2021 18:06

I go for a walk (25 minutes) at lunchtime (I get 30 minutes lunch break which I try to be zealous about keeping, though not always possible).

I do an exercise video in the evening at about 8pm - normally around 40 minutes - and then go for another walk of approx 30 minutes.

This is a new routine since lockdown - prior to that I used to walk to work and go to the gym in the evening.

gwenneh · 18/08/2021 18:11

My day is usually work/family commitments/errands in some combination. After work it's cook dinner, kick off the bedtime routine, and relax. Some days when we have activities after work, more planning is involved and I'll try to get something in the slow cooker or make sure we have some kind of meal prepared when there won't be time to cook.

Fitting in "exercise" as in a formal gym membership has never worked for me. I ride horses so I'm at the yard a minimum of 2x per week, once after work and once per weekend. It's all I can commit to right now, apart from the odd competition.

ballroompink · 18/08/2021 18:11

I go for a run before work (combining with the school run if necessary) and I also go for a walk at lunchtime unless the weather is very bad or I have meetings over lunch. I am still working at home though so no commute to factor in!

ThisIsNotARealAvo · 18/08/2021 18:14

I get up at 5 and go for a run while everyone is still asleep. DH and kids don't get up until 7.30 but which time
I'm back, showered and ready for work. It helps that kids are 12 and 14, I couldn't have managed this when they were younger. I have also started doing workouts from the Courtney Black app which I do in the evenings sometimes.

StColumbofNavron · 18/08/2021 18:17

I’m rekindling my Les Mills app once the DC are back to school and plan to do it post school run/after pick up. My work is research based to I can manage it around this.

Coriandersucks · 18/08/2021 18:18

I run back from where I drop children in the morning 3 x a week then walk back to collect them and pick up car later in the day (only a couple of miles but it keeps my steps up) then do core exercises mid morning every week day (I wfh) but it’s only about 10-15 min max, then outdoor exercise class once a week.

Weekends I don’t do anything formal just usual running around with children which is probably more beneficial than anything else!

Roundearth · 18/08/2021 18:19

Run 6.30 - 7.15am then leave for work at 8.10.
Walk at lunchtime at work.
walk the dog after dinner about 6.15-7pm

few days a week gym 7.30 -8.30pm

Seesawmummadaw · 18/08/2021 18:20

Get up at 5 and do 30 minute hiit. At work by 7 and walk for an hour at lunch and then a 30 minute dog walk when I get home at 8. On night shift I only do the dog walk and sometimes 30 minutes of yoga because I spend time with my family instead.

Bigbouncingbaby · 18/08/2021 18:22

I often run early around 5.45 walk the dog on the school run . I only work part time so squeezing in running and dog walks

debka · 18/08/2021 18:23

Get up and run at 6:15 before work, even if it's just for 20 minutes. Days off I go further. Yoga once a week in the evening.

MNmonster · 18/08/2021 18:24

Gym three times a week, weekday evenings after 8pm.

I WFH 8-5. Loads of time for exercise.

HazyDaisy123456 · 18/08/2021 18:25

I have just started trying to fit in two brisk walks a day. One first thing on a morning and one after work or on a weekend after tea. Try to get in at least 8-10K steps a day (even on busy, wet working from home days) but ideally like to do more.

lljkk · 18/08/2021 18:27

tbh, I structure my days around my exercise plans.
This lifestyle may only really be possible because DH is the Work at/near home parent.

Days Working FT: I usually had to commute anyway. So, exercise is part of the commute. Train+cycle or cycle whole way, or maybe train+walk. Drive but park 1 mile away from work (nearest free parking anyway). So 20minutes walk each way.

Sometimes run 40 minutes or Swim 45minutes before starting the commute, or, same in evening.
Usually take at least 20 minute walk at lunchtime as well.

non-work days: whatever I have to do on weekend, try to cycle or walk to do it. Try to plan other weekend chores around outdoor exercise. Drag DC out for walks. Gardening & housework is exercise too.

LittleRedPill · 18/08/2021 18:27

I get up early and do 30-40 minutes then (sometimes a run, sometimes lifting weights or Pilates). Sometimes I can squeeze in a brisk walk during my lunch break too.

MilkTrayheaven · 18/08/2021 18:28

WFH, start at 9

Run 3 x a week either before work, 7.00-07.50, have quick shower, toast and tea etc and sit at my desk for 9am. Or after work, leave at 17.15 and get back just after 6 (which I did tonight)

50 min brisk walk with the dog every single lunchtime Monday-Friday without fail.

Two evenings a week I ride after work (horse) and weekends I don’t really have a set routine, I’ll walk the dog for an hour a day and ride.

That’s all the exercise I do (run 3 x a week, walk the dog 1 hour a day 7 days a week and ride 3 x a week) it’s still not bloody enough for me to be the exact weight I want to be (I’m 8.5 stone but want to be 8) but I’m not dedicating anymore time to exercise each week, already feel like other than work it’s all I bloody do!)

All of that is helped by the fact I WFH though. Does make it much easier to exercise.

Beebopawhop · 18/08/2021 18:29

@ThisIsNotARealAvo I need your motivation of getting up early ...

Beebopawhop · 18/08/2021 18:29

Otherwise there is no way with kids etc ??

Rannva · 18/08/2021 18:32

Walk, not car.

After work 2x a week, gym, 1 hour session.

Sometimes stretch or light weights in the morning.

Two weekend sessions, one weights, one climbing or bouldering session.

Kids are home with DH, obviously (@Beebopawhop). I have competitions to train for and I enjoy it a lot, so it's not hard to find the time. I don't think kids really stop you doing anything you want to do at all.

UsernameNotAvailableApparently · 18/08/2021 18:33

The best advice I ever got around exercise was to find something you actually LOVE and want to do. You’ll find it a lot easier to make time if it’s something you actually enjoy.

I love dance workouts, Pilates, yoga and swimming but never ‘found the time’ for the gym or running because I didn’t actually want to do them!

I work long shifts and still manage to find the time for 20-40 mins exercise most days, more on my days off.

MinnieMountain · 18/08/2021 18:33

I cycle to and from work and most other places.

Swimming is early Sunday and either before work once a week in the school holidays or on my 2 non-working days.

I walk for 40 minutes in my lunch break once a week.

Createdjustforthis · 18/08/2021 18:35

I have young kids, a job and couldn’t possibly keep to any of the schedules above. My life changer has been getting an Apple Watch which is massively helpful as a visual reminder of how much of a lard arse I’m being and encourages me to walk or do an exercise class.

Echobelly · 18/08/2021 18:35

I WFH - have kids (older, tween and teen). Work 9-5, can do my job in those hours so don't work outside them unless strictly necessary. No one will suffer if I don't check my emails outside those hours.

I do 20 mins yoga or HIIT every morning (jncluding weekends). Weekdays, alarm set for 7am, also I invested in a 'bike desk' and listen into meetings where I'm not expected to contribute or watch online seminars while cycling for 30-40mins at a time most weekdays.

Seems to work for me, but it wouldn't have been possible when my kids were 5 or more years younger unless I were to have persuaded DH to totally take charge of them in that time.

I do a gym class 7-8am three days a week then drive home, so the nursery run and then back for shower etc before starting work at 9 (wfh). If it's a busy day then I sometimes go to the 6am class. I also do a class on Saturday morning.

I then play netball 1-2 times a week - usually late ish (after 8pm)

Exercise is pretty high up the priority list for both DH and I so we make sure both of us can do most of what we want - it's rare that we're both at home on a mon-thu evening.

Thirtyrock39 · 18/08/2021 18:38

When I get a lunch break I try and go for a fifteen minute walk
I jog (slowly) three evenings a week in spring and summer and do two longer runs in winter when it's two dark to go in the evenings/ one on the weekend one on my day off
