What does your average day look like? When do you fit in exercise?!

Just that really… what does your average weekday look like?! All I seem to do is work! What do you do after work? What exercise do you fit in and when?
@itsgettingwierd you'd think so wouldn't you Grin but there are no pavements in my village and also if I carry/push the babies, the older one falls asleep (and then won't go bed until 10pm and I do all bedtimes with the baby in tow) so it doesn't really work. I do need to find a way, I've tried exercise videos but normally one or other child will start crying.
Yeah it's not easy.

I found it wasn't really until ds hit 11 that I managed to fit it in better.

Get fit with Rik on you tube is quite good. He does walking exercise and you choose ones for the number of steps you want to get in.

Two small kids, WFH full time. I walk the kids to school in my running gear and then run for 20 minutes before going home to be at my desk at 9.

how do people get up at 5 or 6am 😱
Easily

In term time it's easy for me, my eldest is in school every day, the smallest is at nursery 3 days a week. The gym I go to has a crèche that I can use for 2 hours every day including weekends and at weekends they run a 2 hour club for the older kids. I work evenings and weekends so I do my stuff in the day. 3 days I do weight training, one day I do mountain biking, a weekend day I do some cardio at the gym as well as walking some of the school runs.

School holidays are difficult because I have nowhere for my eldest to go if I want to go to the gym so I have to squeeze in time if my husband is off or I have childcare for them.

My job is in a pub though so when I'm at work I am walking backwards and forwards with trays of drinks or plates of food. If I'm on a day shift I walk the half mile distance so that's a mile.

I really need to shift the lockdown weight so once school is back I'm putting in the effort to increase my exercise by a load more and trying to eat less crap and less food/drink less alcohol.

Because we have no other time to exercise, and it's important?

I feel far fitter and more rested now, even though I get up early, than I did when I was overweight and slept in til past 7 every day. I was always sluggish and tired even though I got plenty of sleep, probably because of my weight, my diet, and the fact I did no exercise.

Jellycatspyjamas · 19/08/2021 21:24

@countrytown I set an alarm and drag my arse out of bed, try to get to bed at a reasonable hour and get on with it. It’s the only consistent time I have and if I didn’t keep to a routine I’d never exercise.

PinotPony · 19/08/2021 23:57

My gym also live streams the studio workouts to members via Zoom. So I can join a workout with my pals even if I can't leave the house. As a result, we've not missed a single workout during lockdown.

Big screen with people working out at home too..!

For those of you that get up at 5/6 to exercise, how long did it take for it to feel 'normal' and make a difference to energy levels? With two young kids and a FT job this is the only time I have, but I am constantly tired!

It took a month or so for me, but now it's just normal and absolutely fine. I love working out in the morning, when DS was little it had to be a home workout in front of youtube as DH was working away, but now going out for a run is absolute bliss. Coming home and having a shower really preps me for the day, but absolutely at first it was bloody horrendous and felt like stopping every day!

It took me about a week and the same again if I've had time off for an injury. My alarm goes off at 5:20 and I do every other day (it's pointless to exercise every day see diminishing returns). I usually go to sleep around 10/10:30 but every now and then will have an early night sometimes 8:30! Whilst I'm at the gym dh will give the dc breakfast, make their lunches and they're usually in the process of getting dressed once I get home. Dh leaves for work about five mins after I get home.

It's just about getting a new routine, it's never going to become a habit and the motivation is rarely there when my alarm goes off, but the commitment is and I know I'll feel better for having gone.

garlictwist · 20/08/2021 07:38

I am not an evening person so never exercise then. I get up early and either go for a run or go on my spin bike which I bought from ebay for 100 quid.

I also have some kettlebells and light weights that I do a few times a week.

Now I'm wfh I go for a bike ride in my lunch hour but I won't be able to that when I'm back in the office.

I also walk to the supermarket and back a few times a week to buy food (about an hour's round trip).

Tumbleweed101 · 20/08/2021 07:41

Only thing I have time for exercise wise is dog walking. I know I need to do more but between work, children and house it's not easy to have a routine and it isn't a priority for me like it is for some people.

I’ve done it for a long time, I was a fulltime professional sportsman for eight years, I’m now semi-pro so from the age of 17 I’ve had my routine.

It depends on what you value as well, to me not exercising enough is as bad as having a poor diet. I wouldn’t solely feed my body McDs, freezer food etc, just as I wouldn’t neglect it through a lack of exercise.

Accountability also helps for me as well, if I don’t have exercise it isn’t because I don’t have time (anyone who watches TV, surfs the net etc has time), its because on that occasion I have been lazy and attempted to blame a non-existent excuse, when the only thing to blame is me for actively making a poor choice.

Polkabott · 20/08/2021 07:53

I've always been an early bird which helps, but as a general rule I always exercise first thing, which at the moment before work/toddler is up is about 5am. It did take a while to adjust, but it does make a huge difference to my day if I do it, I feel much better and and think it does lead me to make better food choices as well, I have less cravings for junk.
