to ask what £300k would buy where you live?

And do you like living there? If not, where would you rather be?

WIBU to consider moving there with my DC?

(This is part idle speculation, part deadly serious as going through separation and I've never liked the the town we currently live in. It doesn't have much to offer older DC, plus the secondaries aren't great here. Wondering where we might all have a better life... )

We are in a village north of cambridge and 300k would get you a good size 2 bed or slightly smaller 3 bed. You could get something slightly bigger for the same price if you were willing to go a bit further north. Closer to cambridge or south you’d get less for your money

Habbyhadno · 17/08/2021 19:40

There's a two bed bungalow that needs modernising up for £625k here, so not much

FourTeaFallOut · 17/08/2021 19:41

North East. 4 bed, 2 reception detached home with a decent garden in a catchment for a bunch of good/outstanding schools. Not great public transport though tbh, you need a car.

Soulstirring · 17/08/2021 19:44

I’m in North Yorkshire and 300k will get you a nice 3 or 4 bed. Commuting distance to Leeds, York and Doncaster. Good area.

generalh · 17/08/2021 19:47

A little over 300k

QueenHofScotland · 17/08/2021 19:47

I’m in Scotland in a small affluent village. £300 would secure you a decent sized 3 bedroom conversion, or a 3-4 bedroom detached property on a 1960’s estate (not council)

MrsWooster · 17/08/2021 19:47

Mahoosive house in a not brilliant suburb or very nice 3bed semi needing moderate titivating in a leafy/ good schools/ artisan coffee bars type of suburb

HotChoc10 · 17/08/2021 19:48

A studio/one bed flat, in an area of zone 3 London that isn't even very nice

QueenHofScotland · 17/08/2021 19:48

£300k that should read Grin

Pineapples9087 · 17/08/2021 19:51

You could get a 4 bed detached house with garage and garden etc where I am (Central Scotland). I love living here, countryside and city life both within 30 minutes!

Justcashnosweets · 17/08/2021 19:53

A 4 bedroom detached house with a substantial garden. South-East Scotland. I love where we live.

Justcashnosweets · 17/08/2021 19:53

South-West Scotland even 🤣

TheSunIsStillShining · 17/08/2021 19:55

Where we live you would probs not even get a garage space for that money. (we are renting, so unfortunately not loaded enough to live here permanently). SW London

Gherkingreen · 17/08/2021 20:00

Large three bed or small four bed detached in a nice area here, North West.
20 miles from Liverpool and Manchester, less than 2 hours on train to London and an hour from the Lakes, three from Edinburgh.
Perfect location for commuting or travelling up and down England. Great schools, loads of absolutely beautiful countryside on the doorstep, but lack of investment in local infrastructure/town centres, although there are still lots of positives too like independent businesses/food festivals/cafes and bars thriving.

OrangeSamphire · 17/08/2021 20:00

I know exactly. Because the cottage next door recently sold for this exact amount.

Two tiny bedrooms
No central heating
Riddled with damp. The walls are like sponge.
Structural cracking
Needs a massive amount of work after being a neglected second home for decades.
Absolutely cracking sea view.

Ten years ago £300k would have bought you our house. 5 bed large family home in good decorative order with sea views, garden and parking.

Coastal Cornwall.

ChristmasJumpers · 17/08/2021 20:09

A 3/4 bedroom detached house where I am (I bought my 3 bed semi last year for less than half of this amount)
I'm in the north west and I think it's lovely :) a short drive to the coast, a short drive to the country and all the benefits of small city life. It's not far from 2 major cities either for better shopping/uni options when DC are older.

DerAlteMann · 17/08/2021 20:19

Medium 2 bed flat in a nice area or small 3 bed house in a not so good area.

Meandmyhamsterheadagain · 17/08/2021 20:21

A 2 bed flat or a small 2 up 2 down style house where we are in the South East. A 3 bed semi is around 350/400k if you are lucky.

kazza446 · 17/08/2021 20:21

This

45 minutes to the Lake District. An hour to Manchester or Liverpool. In catchment for 3 grammars and a couple of outstanding rated primary schools and two universities on your doorstep!

Natsku · 17/08/2021 20:23

A big detached house with two saunas and its own beach. You'd have to move to Finland though...

dreamingofsun · 17/08/2021 20:23

of course all this levelling up the north is going to mean more jobs and hence higher house prices.

User7458 · 17/08/2021 20:25

We live in Northants and our house is about £300k, it's a fairly average 1930s 3 bed detached.

Dixiechickonhols · 17/08/2021 20:26

3 bed new build detached. Area places highly on UK best places to live. Lancashire.

FatAnkles · 17/08/2021 20:28

Not a lot tbh www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/104028320

Animum2 · 17/08/2021 20:57

No houses available in my area for that much, just flats
