British student went to Afghanistan on holiday Hmm Is now trapped in a safe house and has ‘accepted death’. He’s been live blogging about his situation on 4chan. Incel types hailing him as a legend.

AIBU to think this is has to be a windup?

@AbsolutelyPatsy

a relative went on a package tour to Ethiopia
Ethiopia has been a mainstay of ‘adventure’ travel companies for a good few years now. Mainstream ones, not the specialists I mentioned earlier that actively plan itineraries to dangerous and/or edgy places. Great cultural heritage and scenery. I would view an organised group holiday there as very much in the safe and sensible category of holidays.

I haven’t looked into it myself, but I imagine you could plan independent travel there pretty safely and easily too, taking note of any areas or things to avoid.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 16/08/2021 15:31

I’m not having any opinion or thoughts on it.
I just hope it is wind up.
One thing I do agree with you though is Afghanistan isn’t really a holiday resort.

NigellaSeed · 16/08/2021 15:38

@VeryLongBeeeep

From his 4chan page:

‘I just made it to the airport and there aren’t enough spaces on the plane for me and all the Afghan interpreters who are seeking asylum in the U.K. Since I’m a citizen I get first priority. I may have just prevented a rapeugee [sic] from entering my country. Feels pretty good’

I don't have words to express adequately how abhorrent this stupid little wannabe-shock-jock's attitude is.

@VeryLongBeeeep if he really said that then I don't care what happens to him. He should be last out of there. Cunt.

Well I did have a bit of sympathy for him, because he was young and make a bad d

It's not a holiday resort but it can be a holiday. It has had a period of relative stability, I have a friend that works out there, and has had family visit for holidays, last time being 2019. The pictures are beautiful, I am heartbroken for them all. (Afghanistan that is)

The pp that said about feeling safer off track I actually agree, my scary moments when travelling happened in the 'safer' well known areas.

@m0therofdragons

It wasn’t expected to be a war zone if you listen to Biden and our own government so how exactly was an undergraduate from Birmingham supposed to predict this? I totally get the fascination and wanting to see the truth behind our news. I have family all over the world and have been fascinated comparing our media coverage of covid. Not everyone wants a package holiday to Ibiza. I have dc now so wouldn’t go but in my younger years I wanted to be the next Kate Adie.
It was predicted that Afghanistan would turn into a war zone by many commentators. There was an expert on CNN as soon as it was announced and he predicted exactly this. He said it was disastrous, too fast and madness to publicise the timescales. He was so certain what was going to happen that I remember telling DH all about it. Many people have spoken out about how things might turn out including UK experts. He should have done some research.

Maybe if Biden hadn't been in such a rush to get troops out before the 20th anniversary of 9/11, things might have turned out differently.

tattymacduff · 16/08/2021 15:40

What a vile specimen he is.

Submitted too soon!

Decision.

If this quote is true though then he's an obnoxious little tosser and I I hope he gets changed when he gets home though I've no idea what they'd actually charge him with,

Tuscancat · 16/08/2021 15:41

Why are you lumping China in with iran and rwanda?

MrsTerryPratchett · 16/08/2021 15:42

If I worked at Kabul airport, I'd chain him to a radiator and 'forget'.

oh please

if you are that fascinated, you educate yourself. If you are too superior for a package holiday to Ibiza, don't play the dumb card to justify your stupidity.

Firstly, anyone with eyes knew exactly what was going to happen....but he didn't need to predict anything given that he went there AFTER it had already started happening....

MrsTerryPratchett · 16/08/2021 15:43

@Tuscancat

Why are you lumping China in with iran and rwanda?
I assume that was for me.

If so, I've lumped it in because other people do. The Shock people appear to believe it's dangerous and/or scary. I agree it's neither unless you happen to be from certain groups.

isthisareverse · 16/08/2021 15:44

I am guessing because if you behave like an uneducated arrogant western arsehole who think they know better, China really isn't a safe place for you. Despite the many Westerner living quite happily there.
NigellaSeed · 16/08/2021 15:45

There's pictures of people scaling walls and climbing on top of planes

It's a living nightmare.

Also Rwanda is fairly bog standard for tourism a lot of the time.
AbsolutelyPatsy · 16/08/2021 15:46

not a bad idea.

Surviving or not, he'll make a good story and will gain a bit of fame, which is what he's after. You'll be doing him a favour really.

Just realised what his "mis-spelling" of refugee is supposed to mean. What a total toe rag.
HumousWhereTheHeartIs · 16/08/2021 15:47

Journalists are trained to work in these areas, have safe houses, have support, means of escape, local contacts and risk their lives to bring us the story.

Whether this risk-taking attention-seeker booked in May or 20 years ago, he still travelled there last week while the situation was deteriorating.

Anticipated what? He went AFTER it was already happening and was widely available on the news!
ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 16/08/2021 15:48

Well if that quote is correct he didn’t go out there because he gave a shit about the Afghan people.

The violent breakdown of a society is not a video game to entertain self indulgent people from the U.K.

old enough, and clearly educated enough to have 0 excuse for that horrendous behaviour.

If he has enough brain to find Afghanistan on a map and organise his way there, no excuse for ignoring the facts.

The police got involved when some muppet made racists comments on twitter over football. Do not tell me we are going to let that moron get away with what he did if he lands here.

RincewindsHat · 16/08/2021 15:54

I can believe it, when things kicked off in Cairo at the end of 2010 some twit I went to university with headed straight out there just to have a gander apparently. He's not a journalist or anything, just an idiot.
