British student went to Afghanistan on holiday Hmm Is now trapped in a safe house and has ‘accepted death’. He’s been live blogging about his situation on 4chan. Incel types hailing him as a legend.

AIBU to think this is has to be a windup?

I once sat in a pub in Newcastle next to a table of four students who were trying to find flights to Syria, because they thought it would be 'totally fucking cool' to see if you could get in and out of somewhere so dangerous and off the beaten track Hmm

So yeah I believe it's possible.

Greystray · 16/08/2021 14:53

Lots of victim blaming here. Do we say this about murdered solo female travellers? That they’re idiots for being female and travelling alone to....well anywhere....and end up raped and dead on a beach? Or at a hotel?

That you can even compare...

Qwerty789 · 16/08/2021 14:53

@Pedalpushers

Of course it is his own fault, but I find it pretty ghoulish that apparently loads of mumsnetters wouldn't care if he literally DIED for doing something stupid. Like, what he's done isn't a crime and yet people on here seem almost gleeful that he will get his comeuppance. Perhaps his dark tourism isn't so far removed from your own attitudes.
It's very very far actually.

I don't want him to die. But do I care much if he does? No. But then, do you care about all the people who ARE going to die in Afghanistan? No, of course you don't. You care about this fucking idiot because he's British.
He caused his own troubles, he went to a war zone on purpose, for the thrill of it. So he should be happy now right?

Sashimimimi · 16/08/2021 14:55

Ok this is bollocks then.

From the times: ”Routledge, a Catholic, said he had been praying “roughly every 20 minutes” and wearing his cross while walking the streets”.

AS IF he would be wearing a cross while walking around Kabul Hmm FFS

I actually can't believe someone compared some idiot going to a warzone for his disgusting thrills, to a lone female tourist who gets raped and murdered on a beach. Is that really how you see these women?? You are a disgrace

isthisareverse · 16/08/2021 14:59

The simple fact that this moron is detracting attention from the face of the real victims is offensive.

There's not enough time or space to show the picture of all the kids who will be destroyed. But they are not British, hey.

MrsTerryPratchett · 16/08/2021 15:00

I've been to some pretty dodgy places. So much so that once at passport control I was asked if I worked for the UN or something. Not everyone wants to go to Tenerife or Gstaad. I've been present for a coup (very short lived) and been in lots of the kind of places where the hotel look under your car for bombs with a mirror. I've had some very very dodgy moments.

This bloke sounds like a twat and I wouldn't have gone to Afghanistan a week ago. I have limits. But as for why? Have you looked at photos or Afghanistan? Or China, even North Korea's landscape? Iran, Syria, any of the 'stan's architecture? Rwanda or Ethiopia's wildlife?

He might have gone because he's a thrill-seeking, alt-right wanker. Many people go to see things that are beautiful and cannot be found in Europe. And to avoid drunk tourists, often using an exploitative sex-trade and treating locals horribly. Off the beaten track is frequently safer in many ways. I might worry about getting trapped in some countries but not getting mugged. Where there are no tourists is normally much friendlier and kinder.

As I say I have limits. No North Korea for me and although I'd love to visit Iran; not right now. But don't discount the rest of the world and ask why? Some dangerous places are incredible.

HAHAHA

ask people who have been involved in rescuing, or simply finding the off-the-beaten tracks tourists. You can, more or less safely, go to less visited countries like the ones you mentioned, but the pretentious "exploring" know-it-all tourists are the worst.

been in lots of the kind of places where the hotel look under your car for bombs with a mirror.
that even includes Germany a few years back, it hardly makes you an adventurer.

i dont see how it could be a joke
SilverTimpani · 16/08/2021 15:13

@DifficultPifcultLemonDifficult

You have little sympathy for a young man potentially facing being murdered because he made a bit of a daft decision, and then things escalated unexpectedly? Confused

Its not a hoax either, he planned it months ago.

I think ‘travelling to Afghanistan for a holiday despite the advancing taliban’ is a little bit more than a daft decision.

There are afghanis who have worked for the british military who will be left in Afghanistan to be murdered because there are insufficient resources to get them out, and this clown has made a purely selfish decision which will either lead to his death, or to resources being used getting him home which could have been spent saving people who have actually contributed to society and made huge personal sacrifices in the name of peace in Afghanistan.

I have no sympathy for him. His own selfishness and disregard for the safety of others led him to where he is now.

AbsolutelyPatsy · 16/08/2021 15:14

a relative went on a package tour to Ethiopia

Window1 · 16/08/2021 15:17

What would you actually do during a trip to Afghanistan?

He'll be far safer to be seen as a practising Christian than if he told potential Taliban captors he was an Athiest.

m0therofdragons · 16/08/2021 15:18

It wasn’t expected to be a war zone if you listen to Biden and our own government so how exactly was an undergraduate from Birmingham supposed to predict this? I totally get the fascination and wanting to see the truth behind our news. I have family all over the world and have been fascinated comparing our media coverage of covid. Not everyone wants a package holiday to Ibiza. I have dc now so wouldn’t go but in my younger years I wanted to be the next Kate Adie.

In what way? Tourism creates a market for seedy rip-offs and crime that preys on them. I'm not talking about actual war zones. Just trying to say there are reasons to go places where other people think you're mad to visit.

And no, I'm not 'some kind of adventurer'. I'm very selective and a chicken. But people do look horrified and baulk at any kind of visit to anywhere remotely interesting. Rwanda? Shock China Shock Shock Columbia Shock Shock Shock Iran Shock Shock Shock Shock You're much more likely to get mugged or ripped off in LA or Jamaica, both tourist destinations.

Again not talking about war zones. But the rest of the world is amazing, even the bits with shitty governments, corruption and terrorism.

@Window1

I assume his intention was to wander around, take some “edgy” photos for the interwebz, and then fly back out.

But Afghanistan is a fascinating country with a rich history. I’d love to visit, in more stable times - much as I would Iran, Iraq, Lebanon and Eritrea.

VeryLongBeeeep · 16/08/2021 15:26

From his 4chan page:

‘I just made it to the airport and there aren’t enough spaces on the plane for me and all the Afghan interpreters who are seeking asylum in the U.K. Since I’m a citizen I get first priority. I may have just prevented a rapeugee [sic] from entering my country. Feels pretty good’

I don't have words to express adequately how abhorrent this stupid little wannabe-shock-jock's attitude is.

SofiaMichelle · 16/08/2021 15:26

If this is true, I really hope his fucking idiotic actions don't contribute to more servicemen and servicewomen being killed or injured.

tattymacduff · 16/08/2021 15:26

Why are the media even giving this fool coverage?

MadinMarch · 16/08/2021 15:27
