I've been to some pretty dodgy places. So much so that once at passport control I was asked if I worked for the UN or something. Not everyone wants to go to Tenerife or Gstaad. I've been present for a coup (very short lived) and been in lots of the kind of places where the hotel look under your car for bombs with a mirror. I've had some very very dodgy moments.
This bloke sounds like a twat and I wouldn't have gone to Afghanistan a week ago. I have limits. But as for why? Have you looked at photos or Afghanistan? Or China, even North Korea's landscape? Iran, Syria, any of the 'stan's architecture? Rwanda or Ethiopia's wildlife?
He might have gone because he's a thrill-seeking, alt-right wanker. Many people go to see things that are beautiful and cannot be found in Europe. And to avoid drunk tourists, often using an exploitative sex-trade and treating locals horribly. Off the beaten track is frequently safer in many ways. I might worry about getting trapped in some countries but not getting mugged. Where there are no tourists is normally much friendlier and kinder.
As I say I have limits. No North Korea for me and although I'd love to visit Iran; not right now. But don't discount the rest of the world and ask why? Some dangerous places are incredible.
