AIBU to think DD isn't fully dressed in leggings & a t-shirt?

shesellsseacats · 15/08/2021 00:44

When I ask DD (nearly 9) to get dressed she often comes down in just leggings and a t-shirt, tucked in.

She looks undressed to me.

A t-shirt and leggings are fine for sport, or bed, or for toddlers IMO. Or a long tshirt over leggings is fine too.

But she likes to wear her T-shirt tucked in (which looks lumpy!) She just looks like she forgot to finish getting dressed like that, AIBU?

And AIBU to ask her to put another layer over the leggings? e.g. a skirt or pinafore dress or shorts?

I know it's only a small thing in the scheme of things and I'm inclined to let her get her way if we're just going to the park for a play or something. But I'm curious how others see it?

Being a 80’s child I find this ticking in business weird but realise that this is the current fashion so roll with it. My friend makes her child wear skirts and dresses over leggings. The poor kid is always hot and unhappy.

bananacrumble · 15/08/2021 08:42

I have a T-shirt and leggings on now... my dd will probably put some on to when she gets dressed ?

Ritasueandbobtoo9 · 15/08/2021 08:43

Tucking not tickingGrin

Went shopping yesterday to a shopping centre. A lot of women and kids were wearing leggings and T-shirt’s. Actually, at one point I saw more leggings than jeans.

It may be casual, but she’s dressed.

Pantaloonsfrom1971 · 15/08/2021 08:46

Leggings, unless they are running ones used for actual exercise are all grim on any age and make the wearer look unkempt and kind of poor.

Lily78123 · 15/08/2021 08:47

We are talking about a kid here. Leggings are absolutely fine and comfy, but hey ho add a stiff pinafore dress on top of that, just because her mum has some weird issues.

NoSquirrels · 15/08/2021 08:48

Tucked in is the in thing.

Yes, it looks shit, and lumpy. But it’s fully dressed.

If you really object to the tucked in t-shirt, you could ask her if she wants to go shopping for some crop tops…

I don’t understand your problem She’s dressed

GreatAuntEmily · 15/08/2021 08:49

I don't like the look of leggings with a short fitted t shirt so I can only hope that trends have moved on when DD gets to that sort of age

I can assure you fashions will have moved on - and I can assure you they will not to be your taste Smile

‘unkempt and kind of poor’ Grin

In conjunction with your excellent username I assume your taste is somewhat different!

But if we all dressed for comfort, which is what people claim is a reason for this fashion, we'd all be in onesies 24/7.

I’m wearing this outfit today. It’s advertised as for gym and high street. Is this ok with Mn if I wear it to go to our local deli for brunch. (We’ve been going to the same place for 25 years so I’m sure they won’t be offended but wouldn’t want to upset Mn posters).

That looks lovely and comfy!

Kind of poor?
Skyeheather · 15/08/2021 08:51

I'm 45 and I wear leggings with a T-shirt most days. I am definitely dressed! It's the most comfortable outfit for running about after two small kids and housework etc. For general everyday wear it's fine.

My leggings (for every day wear) cost around £50 - not exactly cheap.

No, most onesies would be too hot for summer!Grin

Lovemusic33 · 15/08/2021 08:54

Isn’t leggings and a tshirt what most 9 year olds wear? What would you like her to wear? Leggings are comfortable?

KurtWilde · 15/08/2021 08:54

@Pantaloonsfrom1971 should we all be wearing these then?

AIBU to think DD isn't fully dressed in leggings & a t-shirt?
shesellsseacats · 15/08/2021 08:54

I posted this and fell asleep, goodness 3 pages of replies! I've had a quick scan but will read properly.

In response to some of them, no this isn't about weird ideas of modesty, she's (nearly) 9. It's just that she doesn't look dressed to me and I wondered what others thought.

I tried to find a photo of a random kid online to show what I meant, but the photos I found online look OK, and I think the key is their t-shirts come down further than DD wears hers and they look more like an outfit to me.

But the way DD wears hers, with her T-shirt tucked in, just looks wrong to me. It makes a difference and doesn't look like an outfit to me, it looks like sportswear or underwear.

Someone suggested making her not tuck her T-shirt in, but she's adamant that's her style and I'm not going to argue about that.

As to the posters telling me I'm going to have a terrible relationship with my DD, FFS you always get a few here don't you, who imagine whole scenarios based on scant info then use it as a stick to beat you with Hmm

I'm asking the question precisely because I'm interested in the opinions of others and in picking my battles.

It does look undressed to me but I'm interested in how others see it.

I'm wondering if it's something I should try to gently encourage her out of or whether it's just me who sees it like that. It's interesting to see how many other people see it as normal wear. (I suspect they're not wearing their t-shirt tucked in though!)

Also where we are right now, it's not that hot.

I would love to know what the 'leggings are gross' gang dress their pre teens in?

My eldest DD 11 lives in leggings and tops/crop tops. Short playsuits or shorts with the tops if its too hot. She wouldn't be seen dead in a dress. Shes dkinny though so everything looks lovely on her.

Youngest DD 5 will only wear dresses, mainly the £3 H&M dresses, she struggles with sensory issuss.

There used to be a time where i would buy pinafores, whole outfits ect but its pointless. Are the clothes clean, no holes, shes covered her essential areas? Then no big deal. A happy child is the main thing and im shocked at how many people would think my child is inappropriately dressed, i could not give a hoot what your kid is dressed in. So judgey.

I (personally, you do you) hate wearing onesies. They ride up into my crotch, and it's an ordeal going to the toilet.

I'll stick with my leggings and tshirts!

Maireas · 15/08/2021 08:56

If you feel she looks undressed, is it because you're buying her thin leggings? Could you buy her sports ones like pp have suggested above?
