AIBU to think DD isn't fully dressed in leggings & a t-shirt?

shesellsseacats · 15/08/2021 00:44

When I ask DD (nearly 9) to get dressed she often comes down in just leggings and a t-shirt, tucked in.

She looks undressed to me.

A t-shirt and leggings are fine for sport, or bed, or for toddlers IMO. Or a long tshirt over leggings is fine too.

But she likes to wear her T-shirt tucked in (which looks lumpy!) She just looks like she forgot to finish getting dressed like that, AIBU?

And AIBU to ask her to put another layer over the leggings? e.g. a skirt or pinafore dress or shorts?

I know it's only a small thing in the scheme of things and I'm inclined to let her get her way if we're just going to the park for a play or something. But I'm curious how others see it?

@shesellsseacats I agree that some of the items in that article are not what I would call leggings; some of the more recent ones are.

If I look as good as Debbie Harry does in my leggings, am I allowed to wear them in public? Or do I look ridiculous regardless? 😉

Most clothing choices are lifestyle related, surely? Most of my week is spent doing fitness classes, yoga and walking my dog. Leggings are suitable for all of these activities so I end up rarely wearing anything else. I like how jeans look but find them uncomfortable and restricting. And the ones that aren’t restricting are stretchy so they slip down because I have small hips. I won’t be giving up my leggings habit anytime soon.

Maireas · 15/08/2021 14:57

Why have you posted pictures of Audrey Hepburn in capri pants? They're not the same as leggings?.

liveforsummer · 15/08/2021 14:58
@chalamet I was meaning adults need some self respect & the young girl-nearly 9, which is old enough for onset of puberty - needs some role models.
Do you like looking at grown women in the sausage skins all day? And yeah I am bringing fat into it. It's a particularly grotesque commonplace piece of clothing that should have been designated underwear as soon as it was made - as plenty of people have no clue when it comes to dressing themselves. Don't care if I sound judgey, cos I am.
Christ! 🤣🤣

OP if anything look at the comments of the minority of others that share your view re leggings. Perhaps that will make you re think. I feel you aren't like them!

waterlego · 15/08/2021 14:58

@Maireas, all of those photos are from the article about leggings that I shared upthread.

30scrisis · 15/08/2021 15:00

DD wears this daily, she's 8. It's an outfit 😬

Oh, thanks, @waterlego!

@Egghead68

I’ve just been out for a walk in leggings and a T-shirt and I’m in my 50s
You`re not alone. Leggings and a longish top standard wear for everyone including the over 50s where I live. Women often going to yoga classes, riding bikes, doing sport in winter or just going out - skin tight see through leggings, probably not though! But kids - for gods sake. I`m thinking of an earlier post where people were worried about girls climbing trees and turning cartwheels in skirts. Now people are worried about leggings. Bonkers.
shesellsseacats · 15/08/2021 15:37

OK, so my solution is in future I'm going to buy more things that'd I'd call slim trousers / treggings / yoga pants but which DD calls leggings as they clearly fulfil the same brief for her. (Simply because I can as I'm the person who buys her clothes and it'll make me happier without making any difference to her at all as far as I can discern).

... but also buy some better quality leggings and accept she'll wear them with t-shirts and won't try to encourage her out of them as it's her style and my eyes are plainly out of touch with young people fashion Grin even if they do look like they forgot to get dressed

I've found these on the Boden sale which I think she'll like.

Yeah, that's all kind of wrong (making girls feel uncomfortable for climbing trees or doing cartwheels I mean, not the wearing of skirts).

To reiterate, I'm not talking about going to the park. I'm talking about situations like going to a restaurant for example. Somewhere you're expected to be a bit less casual.

Remember the thicket leggings can by quite warm so maybe not so suitable for summer. Those flower trousers are lovely unfortunately neither of my dc would like them

liveforsummer · 15/08/2021 15:48

*thicker

QueenBee52 · 15/08/2021 15:49

Good compromise OP 🌸

Mamamamasaurus · 15/08/2021 15:53

@StrangeToSee

As she’s approaching puberty I’d say she needs to wear a long T-shirt or tunic top over her leggings, unless they’re thick leggings with pockets (treggings/jeggings?)

I think of leggings as underwear eg to wear under a dress or tunic, or sleepwear.

Even my 6 year old wears a longline T-shirt over leggings.

WTF does she need to wear a long top because she's approaching puberty!!??

Thanks :)

Also how does a poster know if OP's 8 year old is or isn't approaching puberty? My Dd is nearly 12 and only in the last couple of months has started showing any signs of this.

trancepants · 15/08/2021 16:01

@isthisareverse

Maybe they don't look flattering on you but mine, frankly, look A-fucking-mazing.

come on...

who is the bitchy mean girl with that comment? Bit too late to play the offended one after posting that goady post and getting a laugh instead of the upset reaction you were after Wink

Oh I'm not offended by you. Your posting here has been sickeningly nasty throughout. And why in the name of fuck would I expect you to be upset because I have a great arse? Why would anyone be upset by what someone else's arse looks like? I was standing up to you and you responded with bullying. And then gaslighting and pouting about your opinion.
AngelsWithSilverWings · 15/08/2021 16:03

I agree that wearing leggings and a T-shirt is not properly dressed. Fine for PE or similar but I've never allowed my daughter to go out dressed like that unless the t shirt is tunic style.

I'm sure I'm just horribly old fashioned but I just don't like the way it looks. Never dressed her in leggings as a baby either.

I'm the same with DS about joggers which in my opinion should be worn for sports activities or lounging at home only. I'm gradually losing the battle as he gets older and can now only really insist on proper clothing if he is out with us.

He'll probably just stop coming out with you soon. That's what my nephew did.

MessOfEyelinerAndSpraypaint · 15/08/2021 16:08

@liveforsummer I wasn't talking about op dd specifically : was saying 'often are'.
Anyway I wish little ones nothing but comfort, good times, & good dress sense.
You might understand if you lived where I do. Leggings are underwear for anyone not pre-pubescent how about that. Fight me. Idc.
Fascinating thread op.

waterlego · 15/08/2021 16:08

My 13 year-old DS lives in joggers and T-shirts. He’s a sporty lad and that’s what he feels comfortable in. It’s certainly not a very smart look but I keep my opinions to myself.

liveforsummer · 15/08/2021 16:10

Often are what? I'm a little confused by that response? OP's dd is 8 so likely to be Lee pubescent. Where do you live that leggings are underwear?

RedToothBrush · 15/08/2021 16:14

Bloody hell.

Does this mean, I've left the house naked recently without realising?

PhoboPhobia · 15/08/2021 16:16

@Pottedpalm

It’s fine on children and slim adults who can carry that look, but not tight leggings on larger women unless worn with a longer top.
That is unbelievably awful - in a world where people are trying to teach yound girls to embrace who they are, you are still trying to say that you should only wear certain clothes if you are slim.

If that is how you want to dress because it is to your taste fine but don't try and foist your sizest shit on people who like to wear what they want without being judged.

mollythemeerkat · 15/08/2021 16:23

toothbrush - you definitely have and are raising the sartorial stakes for your neighbours. Some of the comments on this thread are hilarious. I remember years ago, my mum would dress up to go to the local shop. I can understand people dont want their children accompanying them to a nice restaurant looking too casual, though you may lose that battle when they`re teenagers, but for everyday - really? Though I think you may have found a good solution there OP.
