AIBU to think DD isn't fully dressed in leggings & a t-shirt?

shesellsseacats · 15/08/2021 00:44

When I ask DD (nearly 9) to get dressed she often comes down in just leggings and a t-shirt, tucked in.

She looks undressed to me.

A t-shirt and leggings are fine for sport, or bed, or for toddlers IMO. Or a long tshirt over leggings is fine too.

But she likes to wear her T-shirt tucked in (which looks lumpy!) She just looks like she forgot to finish getting dressed like that, AIBU?

And AIBU to ask her to put another layer over the leggings? e.g. a skirt or pinafore dress or shorts?

I know it's only a small thing in the scheme of things and I'm inclined to let her get her way if we're just going to the park for a play or something. But I'm curious how others see it?

Christ on a bike Confused really?
How on earth does a t shirt and leggings not constitute being dressed!

Lemonsyellow · 15/08/2021 12:45

@MsRia

My dh would of had a smack in the mouth if he had said something so disgusting about his own daughter! Let her wear what she wants as long as she is comfortable.
Eh? What are you talking about?
waterlego · 15/08/2021 13:00

@Lemonsyellow, I think that poster might have confused this thread with another, current, very similar one in which the OP’s daughter went out in cycling shorts and the DH said something quite vile about it.

Yes I saw that... awful

liveforsummer · 15/08/2021 13:06

Some heads here would explode on that post if they think leggings are underwear

SunSeaSurfGin · 15/08/2021 13:13

Leggings & t-shirt are the uniform of 9 year olds where I live yabu

mafted · 15/08/2021 13:26

I dislike the look of leggings and a short top.
It just doesn't look right to me, like socks and sandals, jogging bottoms and a shirt or shorts with socks and shoes.

CoffeeWithCheese · 15/08/2021 13:26

Mine generally have two extremes of clothing choices at that age - leggings + t-shirt or the fanciest party dress going.

trancepants · 15/08/2021 13:46

@isthisareverse

It's MN.

You can't express an opinion without someone having to jump to ridiculous hyperboles Grin

It's ok not to let your child wear leggings instead of trousers.
Many parents manage very well, and no one is bitter about it ,offended, shocked, horrified.

It's also ok to notice someone else look ridiculous or is wearing very unflattering outfits without really caring or passing out in shock and horror.

That's the main difference between MN and the real world, not your opinion, but the actual strength of it.

You know that the someone on this thread who was jumping to ridiculous hyperboles is you, right???????

You're the one who started out by condescending to others that leggings are underwear and trying to maintain that your delusions about what these clothing are designed for are somehow obvious to others. Telling other posters they looked ridiculous and their outfits are unflattering when you actually couldn't possibly have a clue what they look like. Mocking some of your daughter's friends (which is a hell of a lot more distasteful than pretty much anything anyone would choose to wear). And compared wearing standard current fashions to outer displays of racism.

Then when some posters stand up to your horrible nonsense about how they look descending into really nasty, mean girl bullying. Because lets be fucking frank here lady, you tried to bully me with your crying laughing emojis. And now that, that hasn't worked you are following the bully's handbook to a T, by trying to gaslight others by claiming they are the ones being hyperbolic and that you were just expressing your opinion.

I really, really hope this is just some pathetic bored trolling because if it's what you are really like, it's really sad. Either way, the shit your are posting could actually hurt people reading this who are less confident in how they present themselves. So, when it comes to how other people look, maybe if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all.

Suzi888 · 15/08/2021 13:47

That’s what I used to wear 😆

liveforsummer · 15/08/2021 13:50

Well said @trancepants . I had the exact same thoughts but couldn't be arsed to actually type them

I have plans to reorganise boxes in my attic this afternoon and am procrastinating hard!
@StrangeToSee
As she’s approaching puberty I’d say she needs to wear a long T-shirt or tunic top over her leggings, unless they’re thick leggings with pockets (treggings/jeggings?)
Why? why should she not wear them approaching puberty? is it 1950??
So do you tut disapprovingly at everyone cutting about in gym gear??
so pockets make it ok? Hilarious

Carrotinsaladiswrong · 15/08/2021 14:01

I wear that on a comfy day as an adult lol nothing wrong with it, tucked in looks a bit frumpy yes but she’s a child….

godmum56 · 15/08/2021 14:01

oh and bigups to @trancepants .....that was a really Excellent procrastation post and I agree with every word especially the mean girl bit

isthisareverse · 15/08/2021 14:16

trancepants
wow, I am not sure why you felt the need to jump on me personally, and you are confusing me with other posters - I am not the one using hyperboles.

What else do you call someone accusing a parent of "ripping clothes of their back" when the discussion is about telling your kid to wear their tops/bottoms with a different item?

Maybe you should stay away from this forum, if you cannot tolerate someone having a different opinion and must call them pathetic bored trolling?

You are taking everything way too personally...

If you feel bullied by a laughing emoji (replying to YOUR laughing emoji...), stay away my dear. You need a break.

isthisareverse · 15/08/2021 14:21

Maybe they don't look flattering on you but mine, frankly, look A-fucking-mazing.

come on...

who is the bitchy mean girl with that comment? Bit too late to play the offended one after posting that goady post and getting a laugh instead of the upset reaction you were after Wink

Parker231 · 15/08/2021 14:28

Had brunch (wearing my leggings and a T-shirt). Most of the girls, teenagers and women are wearing the same with a few in shorts. The men are either in jeans or cargo shorts.

Thankfully this seems to the norm - totally acceptable clothing.

waterlego · 15/08/2021 14:33

Hear hear @trancepants.

Repeatedly using the word ‘ridiculous’ to describe a simple outfit of T-shirt and leggings is certainly hyperbolic!

I don’t believe I look ridiculous when I wear leggings. They might look unflattering or scruffy to some (or ‘poor’ as I believe one poster suggested). But ridiculous? Not really.

Egghead68 · 15/08/2021 14:37

I’ve just been out for a walk in leggings and a T-shirt and I’m in my 50s

shesellsseacats · 15/08/2021 14:39

That's a great article, waterlego.

But, I don't consider most of them leggings.

These, for example, are more like capri-pants, slim-leg tousers or treggings in my eyes.

These are showbiz pics so all bets are off, leggings are great to perform in - and Debbie Harry would look great in anything, anyway!

@chalamet I was meaning adults need some self respect & the young girl-nearly 9, which is old enough for onset of puberty - needs some role models.
Do you like looking at grown women in the sausage skins all day? And yeah I am bringing fat into it. It's a particularly grotesque commonplace piece of clothing that should have been designated underwear as soon as it was made - as plenty of people have no clue when it comes to dressing themselves. Don't care if I sound judgey, cos I am.

shesellsseacats · 15/08/2021 14:46

And these ones - well I must admit I do feel that if they're not doing yoga / sports / dance or hanging out with mates in a very casual way, they do look like they forgot to put part of their outfit on!

But this thread has reminded me how my friends and I used to go around with out thongs peeking out of our combats and think it looked great, so I suppose I can accept there is a trend to do this and my eyes have become old fashioned Grin
