Not an AIBU I know, I’m sure we all are. This was a misogynistic man who identified as an ‘incel’. I’ve never heard of this phrase, but this man”s attitudes to women are common enough. Ok he hated his mum, not unusual, but no reason to kill her. But why kill the others, especially the child? This is all so sad and shocking and it seems that violence against women is becoming so prevalent again.

But his motivation for the killing was his hatred of women which makes it a hate crime. Ergo TERRORIST

Blossomtoes · 15/08/2021 13:21

We have absolutely no idea what his motivation was and we never will because he’s dead. He wasn’t a terrorist, he was a thug.

SunshineCake · 15/08/2021 13:31

Not at all @thedancingbear and don't pretend that's what I said. All of it is shocking but me saying it hits home harder when it is a child is not at all saying that a child's life is worth more than an adult. What you said was our of order.

Meltinthemiddle · 15/08/2021 13:35

We don't know all the information or what led up to those attacks on that day. Did he shoot randomly or did he choose his victims? We need to wait until we have all the information and it's been properly investigated.

www.dailymail.co.uk/video/news/video-2480319/Video-Plymouth-gunman-talks-life-feeling-like-Terminator.html

He felt like life was against him and it wasn't fair, how other people had it easy. He felt like the Terminator - fighting against the odds. He had a very skewed view of life. And yes, he was part of the incel subculture (If you can call it that) so his resentment against women but also men who have evidently got a relationship would have come from that.

I learnt far more than I wanted to about incels from some Twitter feeds - how they talk about women is disgusting, but how they talk about little girls is sickeningly appalling. That if they ever had access to one, they would hand her over to their incel mates to have their way with her, things like that. It is a truly dark world. Porn-driven and depraved.

Fr0thandBubble · 15/08/2021 13:46

@jasminoide

I'm so bloody infuriated that people/the media are trying to "understand" his motivations, him being labelled as "lonely" etc. If he was brown he'd simply be called a terrorist, which he is in my book.
Agreed. No one should be trying to rationalise and "understand" this man's actions. It almost sounds like some people on here feel sorry for him - which is disgusting.
ThumbWitchesAbroad · 15/08/2021 13:57

Sorry, meant to add this before I clicked post, whoops

"In online postings and videos, Davison, who appeared obsessed with being a virgin, repeatedly described his affinity with incel ideology. “I’m socially isolated, have no social circle and don’t know any girls,” he said in one video. In another deeply misogynistic post he said sexual assault was justified because “women don’t need men no more”. He uploaded hate-filled rants about single mothers and “liked” videos about “looking for a whore” and “why women always lie”. Davison wrote that “incel virgins” were people “similar to me”, who had “nothing but themselves”. He described himself as a perpetual victim – “me against the world” – with life rigged against him.
He said he had been “consuming the blackpill overdose”, referring to a fatalistic sector of the incel community who describe themselves as “blackpilled” and believe there is no hope of life getting any better for them because their genetics rule out any woman ever being attracted to them. Most incels start by, as they call it, “taking the red pill”, a metaphor borrowed from The Matrix science-fiction films, in which swallowing a coloured capsule allows the protagonist to see the world as it really is. They claim to have discovered that the whole world is a “feminist gynocracy” ruled by women, where men are helpless victims.
Some believe it is possible to improve their relationship prospects through strategies like “gymmaxxing” (working out), but those describing themselves as “blackpilled” have a nihilistic worldview and tend to see violence against women as a better solution than self-improvement. Online incel forums are steeped in extremist misogyny, with members regularly suggesting women should be raped and murdered. They encourage each other to rise up in a “day of retribution” or “incel rebellion”, when they will punish society, and women in particular, for their suffering, by murdering as many “normies” (non-incels) as possible. "

From the Telegraph link. I think it's pretty damn clear he identified with the incel movement and that was his primary motivation. It also shows possible motivation as to why he killed the father and daughter ("normies") and the other couple later, in the park.

A couple of things have bothered me in the last few days - where is his father? Why no mention of him at all? And how has it been downplayed that his fall out with his mother was because of the horrendously misogynistic views he was spouting? She was holding him to account for what he was saying, and he did not like it.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 15/08/2021 15:23

Ah thanks, @EmbarrassingAdmissions

I’ve no idea what the source was but I have read his father was violent and had been in prison?

"But his parents separated after his father served eight months in jail for an attack on a fellow fisherman, and they moved to Plymouth.

In 2014, when Davison was 15, his dad bit a workmate on the cheek like “an animal that holds on to its prey”. Mark, now 51, had claimed that he felt isolated on the scallop ship he was working on after he realised that he was the only British man among a Polish crew.

Previously he had been fined for racially abusing a bus passenger.

On another occasion he avoided jail for head-butting a dog walker on a beach after the court heard that he had started volunteering with a local church group."

From an article in The Mirror.

From what I've read and know from real life experience about the men in the incel/MGTOW/misogynist community, their fathers are a violent, alcoholics, neglectful, cheats etc. I'd be interested if there is a link.
The incel movement is gathering speed a new rage of terrorism.
See Incels vs feminist below. Crazy.
Wow, the comments reacting to that video show exactly how bad the problem is. Women are not human in their eyes and at the same time the cause and focus of all of their problems.
Meltinthemiddle · 15/08/2021 20:55

Interesting about his father. He did shoot two other people another male and female who have survived but not much in the press about them. Other then his mum we don't know why he choose his victims. From what I've read he had autism and had an obsession with guns at school. He also had Adhd and attended a special school but never showed any violent behavior according to his teacher who was shocked about what happened to him and his actions. It will be interesting to see what support he has had post 16 due to his sen and mental health issues and how he was still allowed to hold a gun licence.

A crime motivated by hate doesn’t equate to terrorism. The crime is murder; in this case multiple murders were committed. It may well have been motivated by hatred and you could reasonably infer as much but that doesn’t make the murderer a terrorist.
themuttsnutts · 17/08/2021 14:25

From what I've read he was being encouraged by his online peers, too
