Gun control

Following the awful killing last night I am struggling to find why apart from a very few professions anyone in this country needs a gun license.

OP posts:
Roussette · 14/08/2021 20:51

This just reminds me of americans saying it's not the firearm, it's the bad person.
And a good person can take out a bad person with a gun.

Pathetic.

I hope this awful awful tragedy will mean firearm ownership is tightended up even more.

TheValeyard · 14/08/2021 20:52

My dad was a farmer and kept guns for professional reasons. He ended up giving up his license and guns, as he had struggled with his mental health, and didn't want to answer questions about it when renewing the licence.

At the time, he had to have a licence co-signed by someone of 'good standing', such as a justice of the peace.

Roussette · 14/08/2021 20:52

Clearly not when it comes to UK gun laws

Fine

I hope they change

Always always always do those who support guns talk about knife crimes.

Isn't it better to knock out just one (guns) and talk about knife crime too?

I have heard this a million times

cariadlet · 14/08/2021 20:55

@xoJellyBean

Piss off with this absolute bull!

Shooting is also a sport, my family have always had guns. For clay shooting specifically. The UK vets each and every person extremely well including a visit from a police officer! Nobody could ever have predicted what happened the other day but DO NOT start this crap!

In that case, give up your car! Many people are killed on our roads, much much more than gun related deaths... 🙃🙃🙃🙃

@xoJellyBean I agree that we have strict gun laws in this country, that most gun owners are responsible and that most gun crime is committed using illegally held weapons.

BUT it's nonsense to say that this couldn't have been predicted. Obviously, nobody could have known exactly how many murders he was going to commit and who was going to be killed, but there were clear signs that he was unfit to hold a gun licence

xoJellyBean · 14/08/2021 20:55

For someone who reads a lot your grammar is shite
Roussette · 14/08/2021 20:55

@xoJellyBean

There is no need to be rude. I haven't been rude and told you to shut the fuck up

I have asked before.

How and why did this guy have a gun?

Give me reasons

Answer me that

Coogee · 14/08/2021 20:57

I find it utterly pathetic that posters on here can justify this man had a gun licence because 'he wanted one'

You asked why he need a gun licence.

You were told why.

Nobody has suggested that he should have been granted one.

Roussette · 14/08/2021 20:57

@xoJellyBean

I have been on MN a long time.

And I've learnt that when someone doesn't have an argument, they insult anything they can get hold of.

Already you have told me to shut the fuck up and my grammar is shite.

Tell me why this man had a gun licence

xoJellyBean · 14/08/2021 20:58

@Roussette like I said, I don't have access to his gun application! 🙃

Could have been DTL clay shooting, target, pest control... yes they should've picked up since he wasn't fit to own his licence however like a PP said, when he got his licence back he would've had to go through a strict vetting process OR someone signed it from good standing. And that's what the current investigation will look in to this.

Roussette · 14/08/2021 20:58

You were told why

Where?

If I have missed it, I apologise

Roussette · 14/08/2021 21:00

@xoJellyBean

Thank you.
I appreciate that reply.

And I hope that will be looked into

Coogee · 14/08/2021 21:00

Where?

If I have missed it, I apologise

He needed a gun licence so that he could own a gun.

xoJellyBean · 14/08/2021 21:00

@Roussette clearly not READING all the comments! 😳😂😂

AICM · 14/08/2021 21:00

He had a gun licence because he enjoyed going to a club and shooting a gun at clay targets.

Enjoying shooting is no different to enjoying archery or darts.

I have a rifle. I enjoy going to a range lying on the ground and trying to get the highest score I can by shooting holes as near to the middle of a piece of paper as I can. I enjoy that.

In order to do this I need a gun.

greendiva · 14/08/2021 21:03

Why does anyone think they using guns for sport is a good reason to have them. They can easily be replaced with a laser gun like in the modern pentathlon. It's an entitlements selfish attitude.

Roussette · 14/08/2021 21:04

He needed a gun licence so that he could own a gun

Needing one is not enough is it?
I'm sure that all the posters on here would agree with that

AICM

I appreciate your post. And I'm shocked.

Have a hobby, yes. But why can't you use a gun there.

To own a guy to shoot as a hobby is {shock] to me.

To own darts or a bow and arrows is a little different. You can't kill 6 people just like that

ttcsucks · 14/08/2021 21:05

I disagree OP, it's like saying we shouldn't use knives because a small minority of people use them to stab people.

Or we shouldn't drive cars because small
Minority of drunk drivers or those that kill at high speed.

We should not be changing every rule to accommodate a minority of people that spoil things for others

What happened is tragic, but instead of focusing on gun control perhaps we need to look at the mental health system and prevent rather than cure

Roussette · 14/08/2021 21:06

*gun

Not guy!

AICM · 14/08/2021 21:09

The law allows gun owners to keep their gun st home.

The police will inspect the house. You must gave an approved gun safe that must be firmly bolted ti the building. Your house must also be secure and the police might make recommendations about alarms before they allow you to.own the gun.

Most people own their own guns and small.clubs would struggle to find space. Also having lots of guns in one building is a bit tempting to burglars.

AICM · 14/08/2021 21:14

When you apply to the police you must be a fully qualified member of a home office approved club and that club must have a gun range suitable for the type of gun you want to own.

Your certificate then states exactly what type of gun you are allowed to own. You can then only buy 1 gun of that type. If you would like a second gun you have to apply again have gave another entry just for that second gun.

Roussette · 14/08/2021 21:17

AICM

And I hope that this will be reviewed given what's happened.

FrangipaniDeLaSqueegeeMop · 14/08/2021 21:18

My whole family have shit safely for generations

So have a lot of people's Wink

AICM · 14/08/2021 21:18

When I mentioned archery I darts, I wasn't comparing lethality I was comparing the idea of enjoying trying to get a high score on a target.
