minnie driver claiming she was ''sick of being super famous''

I saw this in a headline article today online. Eh when I think of ''super famous'' I think Brad Pitt, Jenifer Aniston, Tom Cruise, J-Lo... generally people the majority of people would be familiar with and recognise their face/be a household name.

AIBU to think this b list actress is or never was ''super famous''? I struggle to think of projects she was in and I wouldn't even recognise her if I saw her on the street or on a picture. I am 35 btw too incase any1 thinks I'm too young so remember the 90s well.

''I think you are using headlining wrong.

The main actor in a film is the person whose name comes first, so see Batman 4 arnold schwarzenegger headlined that.

Julia Roberts, Pretty Woman was her first role as the lead lady, but she didn't headline that, Richard Gear did. Thus actually she was in a support role.''

Actually no Brendan Fraser headlined the Mummy franchise along with George of the Jungle and journey to the Centre of the Earth, all huge hits that spring to mind.

Julia Roberts did headline pretty woman. her and Gere were the 2 leads- he the actor and she the actress. Ok he was the more well known then but she still was a lead-not support.

I know her name and can name a movie she was in; that means she was super famous.

And I mean, you were 11 when she was nominated for an Academy Award. Not sure you’re the bellwether for this one.

MyOtherProfile · 13/08/2021 03:44

I think @Losttheequipment is right here about someone who was a child at the time telling people who were adults about the culture of the time. So many things contribute to fame - minutes on chat / cultural shows, inches in magazines, discussions down the pub. It's much more than listings on IMDb.

Balgoresboy · 13/08/2021 03:44

''Aw sorry but at 12 you were a child and probably not up late watching the chat shows or sitting down the pub discussing modern culture with your mates. '

I watched all the chat shows back then actually and me and my mates talked endlessly about pop culture at that age at school. Does sitting in a pub make it different?

''I remember some stuff from when I was 12 but no doubt far less than someone who was late twenties at the time.

Definitely an age thing.''

Well speak for yourself then, your experience of being 12 is not mine.

Still can't sleep. Sad
Robert Forster should have won that year for Jackie Brown
As for Titanic, I link to this (which I always do when it comes up)

I've also just seen what you put about Kate Winslet. Same applies there.

Balgoresboy · 13/08/2021 03:46

''And I mean, you were 11 when she was nominated for an Academy Award. Not sure you’re the bellwether for this one.''

I was into films since I was 5, watched all the awards ceremonies and my mum let me watch the films when they came out on VCR. Please don't speak as you know my situation.

OP your protests about 12 year old you are kind of sweet. We all thought we were so grown up at that age, didn't we? Yes I do think your experience will have been different from those of us who were adults. But obviously we aren't going to convince you. I'll leave it there. It's been quite entertaining.

Balgoresboy · 13/08/2021 03:50

''OP your protests about 12 year old you are kind of sweet. We all thought we were so grown up at that age, didn't we?''

no but I was always into films and entertainment. By 12 I had about 140 vcrs, I'd seen every movie- you name it. It was my interest and passion and still is.

@youshallnotpass9
The main actor in a film is the person whose name comes first, so see Batman 4 arnold schwarzenegger headlined that.

Julia Roberts, Pretty Woman was her first role as the lead lady, but she didn't headline that, Richard Gear did. Thus actually she was in a support role.

Angelina Jolie won best supporting actress for Girl, Interrupted but is the first person everyone who has seen that film thinks of when it comes to that film, over Winona Ryder who was the lead.

I would bet 9 times out of 10, the first thing people would say when asked what they know about Pretty Woman is Julia Roberts, not Richard Gere.

How may MNetters could name or recognise the members of BTS, who are the most famous and most recognisable band on the entire planet right now? Or 90% of globally known footballers?

Hannayeah · 13/08/2021 03:52

Also, Jennifer Lopez wasn’t called “J-Lo” until 1997, the same year Good Will Hunting came out. Jennifer Anniston was just a TV actress (and a haircut) then. I didn’t watch it and didn’t know who she was at all. Brad Pitt was maybe a pretty face but a terrible actor with not much under his belt. All of these people continued with their careers, by choice and grew into who they are today. None are in the same category that Tom Cruise was in even ten years prior to that.

God Yes.

SequinsandStiIettos · 13/08/2021 03:55

Ooh.
Would you deem Helen Hunt to be super famous?
Or Hilary Swank?

Earlydancing · 13/08/2021 03:56

@gobackanddoitproperly

Earlydancing I saw the first Mummy and was underwhelmed! I do recall thinking the lead actor was pretty hot though. Does that count?
Yeah, that makes me feel better. Thank you. He's a really nice guy in interviews but had horrendous back injuries from doing stunts which ended his career. At the same time, he was sexually assaulted by the president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, although the guy concerned denies it. That harmed his career too. He made some great films (and a couple of duds!)
Balgoresboy · 13/08/2021 03:59

''Brad Pitt was maybe a pretty face but a terrible actor with not much under his belt.''

by 97, Pitt had huge roles in major films such as Seven, 12 monkeys, Legends of the Fall, A river Runs through it so you are talking garbage as he was 1 of Hollywood's leading men by then.

on one of the biggest tv shows then in the world.

he came forward about the allegations in 2018ish although I think his career was pretty much on done by then anyway.

And by the end of 97 was the star in a little-known film called Titanic!

Earlydancing · 13/08/2021 04:13

he came forward about the allegations in 2018ish although I think his career was pretty much on done by then anyway.

But he was actually assaulted in 2003 and he said the assault affected him mentally and caused him to withdraw from his career. He still made films but not such lead roles after that.
Don't be criticising Brendan Fraser!! 😠😁

gobackanddoitproperly · 13/08/2021 04:14

Oh that’s sad earlydancing. I didn’t know that.

Sequins I never liked Helen Hunt much as an actress. Not sure why? But yes, for a while there she was everywhere!

And Hilary Swank seemed to be the next big thing…until she wasn’t.

Earlydancing · 13/08/2021 04:17

Brad Pitt was in Titanic? 🤔

Earlydancing · 13/08/2021 04:19

Yeah. Helen Hunt couldn't warm to her, I don't know why. And Hilary Swank got an Oscar and then...? She's been in stuff but I don't recognise any of it.

Hannayeah · 13/08/2021 04:20

Do you even know what the word bellwether means?

HarebrightCedarmoon · 13/08/2021 04:23

She was pretty famous in the 1990s, I think some of you are too young to remember.

HasselbackForLife · 13/08/2021 04:29

Oh come on, she was massively famous during the 90s. I don't really get this thread. She was in loads of popular films, Oscar nominated and always in the papers.
