I saw this in a headline article today online. Eh when I think of ''super famous'' I think Brad Pitt, Jenifer Aniston, Tom Cruise, J-Lo... generally people the majority of people would be familiar with and recognise their face/be a household name.

AIBU to think this b list actress is or never was ''super famous''? I struggle to think of projects she was in and I wouldn't even recognise her if I saw her on the street or on a picture. I am 35 btw too incase any1 thinks I'm too young so remember the 90s well.

Andie headlined 2 of the biggest films of 93 and 94 so was more famous than MD in her peak.
I don't think that's how fame works. Angelina Jolie was more famous than the pair of them, but how many good movies has she actually been the lead in?

Whatchoo · 13/08/2021 03:23

You sound like a horrid and bitter person who has a grudge. What’s your problem?

Losttheequipment · 13/08/2021 03:24

That really doesn’t follow at all.

I’m actually quite amused by someone who was a child in the 90s telling a bunch of people who were adults then that they are mistaken about how famous someone was Grin

Balgoresboy · 13/08/2021 03:26

''I don't think that's how fame works.''

Well yes it is, if you are the star of project that sells very well you will get big fame especially in 1993/94 when there was so much less avenues for entertainment as there were only 4 channels and no internet or streaming tv.

''Angelina Jolie was more famous than the pair of them, but how many good movies has she actually been the lead in?''

Many of Jolie's films were acclaimed and sold well, she even got an Oscar.

@SequinsandStiIettos

Which Doctor Who actor is more famous

David Tennant! Grin

Tardis

You could argue Matt Smith.

Also without Peter Davidson there is a chance you might not have Staged,

gobackanddoitproperly · 13/08/2021 03:27

Eh? ‘Again no,’ wut? I agree with what you say re Kate, but Good Will Hunting made MD very famous.

gobackanddoitproperly · 13/08/2021 03:28

You were just too young to remember.

Balgoresboy · 13/08/2021 03:28

'' I agree with what you say re Kate, but Good Will Hunting made MD very famous.''

Fat chance of Minnie Driver ever doing Strictly but if she did, she'd be the biggest name Wink Night!

I think if do an interview in The Times and declare yourself super famous, you're going to expect a bit of blowback. If someone like Brad Pitt declared himself super famous, I don't think anyone would deny it but I'm sure there'd be people on here saying how arrogant he was for saying it.

I'm 15 years older than you and remember her much better than Mena Suvari. MD was on a lot of chat shows at the time because of GWH and GPB as well as her lovelife. I only remember MS because I recently saw an article about her and Kevin Spacey, which reminded me she was the actress in American Beauty. Neve Campbell I don't remember at all. GPB was a very trendy film at the time so Google may not throw up much about it but it was very in for lots of us a bit older than you.

So actually yes, I do think it's probably age related in part. You must have been born in 1985 or 1986 so too young to remember much of what was happening in the 90s films and TV.

However I wouldn't have called her or the others you named super famous. I always found her slightly big headed but I figured that was because she was bigger in America than here.

gobackanddoitproperly · 13/08/2021 03:32

I just had to google Brendan Fraser…l

Noooo, that would be Carlton. Love him. 🥰

Foldinthecheese · 13/08/2021 03:33

I really think it’s an age thing. I’m just a few years older than you, but I was obsessed with Driver’s character in Circle of Friends because I had so enjoyed the book. As a result, she made a strong impression in my mind and I definitely remember her in Good Will Hunting. I also remember her on the cover of my mother’s weekly copies of People Magazine.

I think she acknowledges in the interview that her major fame was fleeting. Good Will Hunting was a very popular film, and she got a lot of attention as Matt Damon’s girlfriend. She says herself that she couldn’t sustain that, and she didn’t want to. At 51, I admire her for sustaining a career in the industry for so long. I follow her on Instagram and she seems like quite a good person: she clearly adores her son and had a lovely relationship with her mum. Given her rather unusual upbringing, and the sudden vault into fame she experienced, it’s impressive that she has turned it all into something that works for her.

DewDew83 · 13/08/2021 03:35

Many of Jolie's films were acclaimed and sold well, she even got an Oscar.
Looking at Rotten Tomatoes, her 4 best received movies are Gia (fair enough) and Kung Fu Panda 1, 2 and 3.

And the Kung Fu Panda movies were second rate animations at best...also had no idea she was in them.

Yet she's really famous, because fame doesn't correlate perfectly with being in good movies.

You've never seen The Mummy and The Mummy Returns. Seriously how is that possible? Do you not have a TV? It's an ITV2 staple. 😂

I was 12 when it was released in the UK and remember the buzz about it, it was at the same time as Titanic and As Good as it Gets was getting all the attention. And no I am not too young to remember them, I was very much into films etc at that age and remember watching the Oscars and being disappointed Helen Hunt won over Kate Winslet and that Robin Williams won over Burt Reynolds on Boogie Nights.

@MyOtherProfile Neve Campbell, starred in 90s cult classic The Craft and the lead in the massively successful 25-year-spanning Scream franchise.

Next minute she’ll be telling us she’s never heard of Andrew McCarthy and he wasn’t that hot anyway.
youshallnotpass9 · 13/08/2021 03:36

@Balgoresboy

''Same as Brendan Fraser, who has only recently resurfaced in the Affair.''

but Brendan Fraser had a string of very successful films that he headlined, MD never had that.

I think you are using headlining wrong.

The main actor in a film is the person whose name comes first, so see Batman 4 arnold schwarzenegger headlined that.

Julia Roberts, Pretty Woman was her first role as the lead lady, but she didn't headline that, Richard Gear did. Thus actually she was in a support role.

I honestly think you are just on the wind up and bored. However, I am going to start a thread about Doctor Who now

Torvean · 13/08/2021 03:37

Her best film for me is Circle of Friends. From 1995.
Colin Firth is in it, Chris O Donnel, Ciaran Hinds .

It's worth watching.

gobackanddoitproperly · 13/08/2021 03:37

Earlydancing I saw the first Mummy and was underwhelmed! I do recall thinking the lead actor was pretty hot though. Does that count?

Balgoresboy · 13/08/2021 03:37

yep I know the brat pack well and pretty in pink is my favourite.

Aw sorry but at 12 you were a child and probably not up late watching the chat shows or sitting down the pub discussing modern culture with your mates. I remember some stuff from when I was 12 but no doubt far less than someone who was late twenties at the time.

Definitely an age thing.

That will be why she wasn't on my radar then. I didn't do horror films.
