minnie driver claiming she was ''sick of being super famous''

I saw this in a headline article today online. Eh when I think of ''super famous'' I think Brad Pitt, Jenifer Aniston, Tom Cruise, J-Lo... generally people the majority of people would be familiar with and recognise their face/be a household name.

AIBU to think this b list actress is or never was ''super famous''? I struggle to think of projects she was in and I wouldn't even recognise her if I saw her on the street or on a picture. I am 35 btw too incase any1 thinks I'm too young so remember the 90s well.

I can't access the Times article so cannot see the quote in context but the paper chooses the headline/byline in any case. Given she uses the phrase 'huge movie star' in one of the interviews I've linked to, she probably did feel for those two years at least 'super famous' given paps on her doorstep the whole time and pressure to keep up with Hollywood's demands. But certainly, in recent interview where she has questioned fame/success/what they mean, she doesn't seem bitter and seems to know her standing.
Can you link to the Times?

Grosse point blank is bloody awesome and she's great in it.

She was on my exH's laminated list so not C List.

Love grosse point blanke.
Wheretobuy · 13/08/2021 01:14

She is a great actress.
Matt-I-don’t-know-Harvey-Weinstein-Damon on the other hand….
He is part of a gang of Hollywood men who are as tasteless and talentless as each other.

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 13/08/2021 01:16

Well I remember her. She was pretty famous for a time. I only know neve Campbell from scream. Not sure that makes her really well known. I wouldn't even remember her name if it wasn't my favourite girls name

Budsaway · 13/08/2021 01:18

@Balgoresboy

''So you really don't like Minnie Driver, OP. Got it.''

I don't like or dislike her, because I don't know her really. I heard her name and can vaguely remember her in Sleepers. That was my point. I am very much into my celebrities as well and always have being.

You say you are into celebrities but do you actually watch films/TV? She is imo very recognisable if you do. I think she is very beautiful and seems very likable.
MercyBooth · 13/08/2021 01:20

@SequinsandStiIettos She also came across really well in an interview in Red a few months ago.

Plumtree391 · 13/08/2021 01:22

Minnie Driver is great. She's been in loads of films and television programmes and has won several awards. I've always liked her, she's a good actress.

CheerfulYank · 13/08/2021 01:23

Being nominated for an Oscar is pretty huge.

I know exactly who she is.

She's the one who always looked as if she had mumps.

GiantHaystacks2021 · 13/08/2021 01:27

She was never super famous.
She was Matt Damon's girlfriend.
Didn't she once say that the only way to get parts in Hollywood was to have the first name Kate - she was referring to Kates Hudson, Winslet and Blanchett.

OhWhyNot · 13/08/2021 01:27

I know who she is

But she has given interviews saying this for some time and with sharing other areas of her life that are quite personal

She knows what gets attention just talking about her new project won’t because it won’t be that big. I don’t think she dislikes fame that much or seems quite keen to keep herself in the public eye

MrsTerryPratchett · 13/08/2021 01:29

I am very much into my celebrities as well and always have being.

I've worked it out. You're mainstream. She's famous in the indie world. Alternative, cool films. You know the blockbuster crowd.

BeenThruMoreThanALilBit · 13/08/2021 01:29

Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher.

Neither have starred in anything I’ve watched, to the point where I don’t know if they’re mostly TV or movie actors. I reckon most people think they’re A List though. I’m mid-40s.

You’re talking about something hugely subjective. Headline or having a starring role in box office hits does NOT define superstardom any more. Kim Kardashian - what’s does she actually DO? But, superstar and instantly recognisable.

My mum couldn’t pick out Beyoncé or Kanye West or Ed Sheeran in a line up where they’re one of 2. Doesn’t mean they don’t feel the pressure of superstardom.

Grosse Point Blank is one of my favourite films.

Circle of Friends on the other hand was a disaster. But it brought Queen Maeve's work to a wider audience do a net good.

PegasusReturns · 13/08/2021 01:32

She was definitely very famous for a period.

And I agree fame has very little to do with the number/caliber of movies you’re in.

But OP you seem to have taken against her, what happened? Did she kick your puppy or fail to be charming whilst ordering her morning coffee?!

LimeRedBanana · 13/08/2021 01:33

I am very much into my celebrities as well and always have being.

You clearly very much need to be right about this, don’t you, OP.

Have it. Take it. It’s yours. Minnie Driver is only as famous as random old you think she is. Grin

MrsTerryPratchett · 13/08/2021 01:42

Now I have to rewatch Gross Pointe Blank.

Where's it live?

Josette77 · 13/08/2021 01:44

I love her! She is fantastically talented. She was super famous in the 90's. No clue who Mena Suvari is? Only remember Neve because she was on a show with my best friend.
Minnie was unique and talented AND famous, it's hilarious to pretend otherwise.

Balgoresboy · 13/08/2021 01:47

'' Headline or having a starring role in box office hits does NOT define superstardom any more.''

Yes it does, name somebody then with superstardom who has no big project-be it hit tv show, movie or singing career?

''Kim Kardashian - what’s does she actually DO? But, superstar and instantly recognisable.''

She is in the Kardashians which is very successful if you check.

SequinsandStiIettos · 13/08/2021 01:47

Here's the thing OP. Even if she does seem to be protesting too much/questioning her career choices/path, where it all went wrong if in fact it did ever go wrong, coulda been a contender etc etc
that's human. That's normal. Given she lost her Mum a few months ago and presuming some of the press is because she has to promote James Corden's Cinderella soon; and that she could well be fed up of being thought of as Matt Damon's ex etc or asked about her heyday...I don't blame her at all for analysing, reframing or telling herself things have worked out as they should. We all do it.
Plus not many of us have achieved an Oscar nomination or a body of work to leave behind.
Big Night was a lovely indie film. Grosse Point Blank still holds up well. I love her for Speechless, I saw it on E4 and thought she was glorious in it. So for all the above, YABU! Wink

SequinsandStiIettos · 13/08/2021 01:49

Grosse Pointe Blank is on amazon to rent for 2.49 in standard

Balgoresboy · 13/08/2021 01:53

''Plus not many of us have achieved an Oscar nomination or a body of work to leave behind.''

Being Oscar nominated or even oscar winning though doesn't necessarily equate to super stardom though. Brittany Spears or Justin Bieber for example would be much more well known and have the more 'super famous' status than lots of Oscar nominated people because films aren't always mainstream/big in popular culture or sell well.

I think people think I am attacking her. I am not. I just don't recall a time ever where I'd have called her super famous.

OP posts:
vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 13/08/2021 01:54

I am 50.

I know exactly who she is and I know why she's called Minnie.

I'd say she was super famous at her peak and I also see why she dumped the whole thing.

This might be an age thing. It was all different when the internet was all fields...
