minnie driver claiming she was ''sick of being super famous''

Balgoresboy · 13/08/2021 00:05

I saw this in a headline article today online. Eh when I think of ''super famous'' I think Brad Pitt, Jenifer Aniston, Tom Cruise, J-Lo... generally people the majority of people would be familiar with and recognise their face/be a household name.

AIBU to think this b list actress is or never was ''super famous''? I struggle to think of projects she was in and I wouldn't even recognise her if I saw her on the street or on a picture. I am 35 btw too incase any1 thinks I'm too young so remember the 90s well.

@steff13

For some reason Neve Campbell doesn't even register with me. Can't tell you why that is, maybe because I only ever saw the first one?

She was the star of the first one.

Yet I think of scream and all I see is courtney cox, its probably me,
Balgoresboy · 13/08/2021 02:32

''I watched Sleepers again the other night and she was most definitely in it for more than 10 minutes! She has a pivotal role! ''

no she didn't.

''I do wish you'd stop splitting hairs, stop claiming to be the paragon of knowledge on fame-level and just admit that, this time, you got it wrong.''

So because you don't agree with me and other posters we ''got it wrong''?

If you'd said someone like Andi Macdowall I'd agree with you. She was very fleetingly famous before people realised she wasn't especially talented, just Very Pretty. I can name 2 things Andi Macdowall has been in - 4 weddings and St Elmo's Fire. Still extremely famous movies and very successful at the time, but I still would never call her super famous from 2 movies

ohthestruggles · 13/08/2021 02:34

Then again I don't subscribe to the belief that women should STFU and be grateful for their lot.

Seriously? Nothing to do with it. Some people are SO hung up on everything being an attack on females. 🤦🏼‍♀️

youshallnotpass9 · 13/08/2021 02:34

Reading all your replies, surely this comes down to the basic argument,

Which Doctor Who actor is more famous.

Same type of thing

DewDew83 · 13/08/2021 02:34

I'm useless with celebrities and didn't watch many movies in the 90s, but even I know who Mini Driver is - she was very famous for a while.

No idea who Mena Suvari or Neve Campbell are (possibly heard the latter's name before...maybe...)

BarbaraofSeville · 13/08/2021 02:35

@Balgoresboy

''She was a huge name in the 90s (Grosse pointe blank, Sleepers, Good will hunting) but she's basically unheard of now.''

The 1st film you mention(which I never heard of) was a small hit that made number 4 on the box office, in Sleepers she had a small support role with about 10 minutes screen time and again in Good Will Hunting she had a support role. That doesn't make her 'huge'.

If you've never heard of Grosse Point Blank then your opinion on Minnie Driver is basically invalid.

It's a cult classic, with an excellent soundtrack and is regularly on TV even now. It's one of those great films that you can always watch even if you've seen it dozens of times before.

FrangipaniDeLaSqueegeeMop · 13/08/2021 02:36

So because you don't agree with me and other posters we ''got it wrong''?

Well apparently being right is measurable and based on how many people DO know her and her decades long acting career I'd say I'm right Grin

Re-watch Sleepers. She's in most scenes in the second half when it's about the characters as adults. She plays the woman in half the men's lives, she's in the courtroom scenes, the scene where one of the boys tells her and Robert De Niro about the sexual abuse and then she has her own section in the epilogue! There were obviously 4 main characters in that movie as it's about the 4 boys, she's definitely the 'fifth' main character.

ohthestruggles · 13/08/2021 02:36

I remember her being in a really shit film called high heels and low lives in the early 2000's. A quick google has shown me she was in much better films than that but I wouldn't say she is super famous Confused

DewDew83 · 13/08/2021 02:36

Had no idea she was dating Matt Damon though. Just knew her as a famous actress.

I love that film!
SequinsandStiIettos · 13/08/2021 02:37

thank you vivarium bless you, I am having it taken out on Monday. Showing it my son made him brush his teeth though! Grin
OP, which actors from the 90s or which artists (any genre) who only had a couple of years of big hits = super famous?
I'd say Jodie Foster and Angelina Jolie but again, they have had the luck/ambition to have a string of box office hits.

plodalong12 · 13/08/2021 02:37

Haven’t RTFT but has anyone posted this yet?

Anyway, her complaint is similar to Catherine Zeta Jones’s, who said, along the lines of: I’m not going to be humble anymore. Sorry if I’m attractive and rich and I’ve got a gorgeous famous husband, but it is what it is”. The attractiveness and richness is something I’ll concede on, but i personally don’t remember Catherine Z Jones ever being known to be humble, nor know of anyone jealous that they don’t get to sleep with 75 year old Michael Douglas??

gobackanddoitproperly · 13/08/2021 02:37

@vivariumvivariumsvivaria

I am 50.

I know exactly who she is and I know why she's called Minnie.

I'd say she was super famous at her peak and I also see why she dumped the whole thing.

This might be an age thing. It was all different when the internet was all fields...

Yes I’m 52 and she really was very famous for a short while. I guess if Julia Roberts had done not much after Pretty Woman we could all be having the same conversation about her right now.
Balgoresboy · 13/08/2021 02:37

''Seriously? Nothing to do with it. Some people are SO hung up on everything being an attack on females. 🤦🏼‍♀️''

Agreed especially on mn.

And I think if I'd pointed out a b list actor saying this I'd have got more support and it would have turned into another misandry thread.

Bet there are a zillion orders of Grosse Point Blanc made tonight.

Worth 2.50 of anybody's money.

Neither did I, had to Google him dumping her on Oprah.

She was in Ella Enchanted too and I Give It A Year which is hysterical if anyone manages to catch it

And if you could read the now vanished imdb threads every 2nd post used to be on what was the point of her character and it served no purpose only to throw a woman into an all male cast.

David Tennant! Grin

Tardis

no not on the same league as pw was one of the biggest films of all time and she headlined it. There isn't 1 big film that md headlined that was successful that I'm aware of and the big films she was in she was supporting.

OP posts:
Losttheequipment · 13/08/2021 02:44

I think this is an age discrepancy thing. There are several of us, erm, older folk pointing out that she did indeed have a very high profile for a while. It’s not so much about how big the films she was in are perceived to be now. She was chat show and tabloid fodder at a time when the internet and social media didn’t exist and there were only four channels on the tv. Times were very different then and she was certainly very famous at that time.

I remember someone at work considering naming their forthcoming baby and my response was “everyone will think Mouse or Driver”.

DewDew83 · 13/08/2021 02:44

DP could only name a few movies, but recalled her being in the front cover of a lot of magazines at the time.

Here's a collection of some of those cover shots:
m.famousfix.com/topic/minnie-driver/magazines

I have no particular fondness for Mini Driver but she was clearly extremely famous for a while.

Very odd thread.

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 13/08/2021 02:44

Her dumping Matt Damon on Oprah is why I was a bit "meh" over Sarah Silverman's Emmy winning song about Matt Damon.

I just thought, "Minnie dumped him>

ConfusedConfusedConfused

What on Earth has that got to do with Minnie Driver?! I used to frequent the IMDB boards and it was full of trolly little twats who's opinions I'd value as much as a chocolate frying pan.

And it's probably because she was a significant character in the book the movie was based on, I mean just making a wild stab in the dark 🤣

You're REALLY clutching at straws now to make her seem insignificant. If you're gonna post a bitchy, snipey thread about someone don't be surprised when people call you out when you're inaccurate.

Toooldforthis321 · 13/08/2021 02:46

She did a stint in Will and Grace (sorry if someone has already said that).

I remember something with Oprah too; when I googled it, I had no idea Matt Damon had said he wasn't dating anyone and therefore finishing with her on the t.v. I had no idea she dated him.
