minnie driver claiming she was ''sick of being super famous''

Balgoresboy · 13/08/2021 00:05

I saw this in a headline article today online. Eh when I think of ''super famous'' I think Brad Pitt, Jenifer Aniston, Tom Cruise, J-Lo... generally people the majority of people would be familiar with and recognise their face/be a household name.

AIBU to think this b list actress is or never was ''super famous''? I struggle to think of projects she was in and I wouldn't even recognise her if I saw her on the street or on a picture. I am 35 btw too incase any1 thinks I'm too young so remember the 90s well.

You were 12 OP, give it up.

You weren’t watching films like Grosse Point Blank, or any of the other films those of us in our 20s were watching.

yname · 16/08/2021 19:37

The only 'Minnie' Driver I know is forever parking her effing car in my parking space.

sera103 · 16/08/2021 20:32

😂🤣😂🤣

CliffsofMohair · 16/08/2021 22:08

@MrsTerryPratchett

Bet there are a zillion orders of Grosse Point Blanc made tonight.

Haven't RTROTFT (read the rest of the fucking thread) from page 8 but Minnie got a few pennies from me as I've rewatched Gross Pointe Blank. So good.

Thought I’d this thread when GPB popped up on my recommended films tonight on Amazon Prime or Disney
MyOtherProfile · 16/08/2021 23:34

many on imdb used to say pointless.

Back to relying on t'interweb because you're too young to remember. Although of course nobody can say anything on IMDB now so you could have made this up!

ReeseWitherfork · 17/08/2021 08:09

Why not take this discussion to IMDB then? Clearly you don't think anyone here has a worthy opinion.

changeyourname11111 · 17/08/2021 08:53

Mean thread OP, and she was super famous. And a good actress, which she still is.

LimberlostLark · 17/08/2021 09:44

The IMDB discussion boards have been gone for 5 years or more. How long have you been dissing Minnie Driver on forums???

cakewench · 17/08/2021 09:58

I’m 44 and lived in the USA in the 90s, and she was definitely the girl of the year or two at one point. The fact that you only reference Sleepers and Good Will Hunting shows that she must have played differently here to there. Grosse Pointe Blank was massive in the USA, especially in my (teen) age group. Circle of Friends was also pretty big. She genuinely seemed to be everywhere in films and the press at the time, so yes I think she has an inkling of what it’s like to be ‘super’ famous, if only briefly.

The fact that I know who she is is a testament to her being well known, tbh. I’m awful with Hollywood names in general and sometimes I feel as if my celebrity name retention ended in the 90s. Grin

Boysgrownbutstillathome · 17/08/2021 10:17

She was in Cars 2 as the female secret agent car.

YankeeinKingArthursCourt · 17/08/2021 13:13

@VivaDixie
Aha, thank you for clarifying, interesting to note. I assumed as much but wasn't sure based on @Balgoresboy 's "perception" of reality😄.

(And I wouldn't want to make ill-informed vast generalisations about an entire culture based on my limited perception / knowledge ... ahem).

Reminds me of when a British 30 something tried to mansplain Grunge/ Pearl Jam etc to me. Yes love, I actually spent a lot of time in Seattle in the 90's, but thanks ...

VivaDixie · 17/08/2021 13:51

Ah @YankeeinKingArthursCourt this really made me smile!

I like her, and yes, in the 90s she was pretty famous. OK not Jennifer Aniston or Angelina Jolie famous, but I'd certainly pick her out of a line up and I'm not that great with identifying slebs.

I liked her in Circle of Friends and Sleepers.

BradPittsLeftTit · 17/08/2021 14:10

@Boysgrownbutstillathome

That was Emily Mortimer. I don't think she's in Cars 2.

I only know as my DS is OBSESSED with it and we watch it at least once a day!

Plumtree391 · 17/08/2021 14:14

Yes. I would say she is still pretty famous and has certainly not been out of work. She's lovely, quirky and funny.

Actors and actresses are often 'flavour of the month' for a while but because we don't see or hear about them all the time, it doesn't mean they are not busy and popular any more.

Minnie Driver is now 51 and is currently working on a film. She has been in loads of things in recent times and I am sure will continue to be so.

Balgoresboy · 17/08/2021 16:24

''Grosse Pointe Blank was massive in the USA, especially in my (teen) age group.''

It flopped in the US.

Yet, I, a person who only ever bought about 10 DVD in my life, own a copy.

Just because you don’t like someone does not mean they were not famous.

MyFartWillGoOn · 17/08/2021 17:18

OP returns every now and then...

minnie driver claiming she was ''sick of being super famous''
trancepants · 17/08/2021 17:34

Off the top of my head, Good Will Hunting, Grosse Point Blank (fabulous movie) and Circle of Friends were her big cinema movies. She was the female lead in The Riches, which I think only had one series. And female lead in NBC prime time comedy Speechless which was a much lauded show that had a lot of attention in the US being really fun and sensitive portrayal of a quadriplegic non-verbal teenager and his family.

She isn't super a-lister famous. Not everyone would have heard of her or recognise her. But I doubt a day of her life goes by where she isn't recognised repeatedly whenever she leaves her house.

i think i get it now. you’re not going to stop until this thread shows up in the DM sidebar of shame aren’t you? guess that’s one way to get ‘super famous’ Hmm
SocialAffairsAndWoodlandFolk · 17/08/2021 17:44

The film earned an estimated $6,870,397 in its opening weekend, ranking number four at the box office. It went on to earn $28,084,357 in the United States, and a total of $31,070,412 worldwide.

^About Grosse Point Blank. It's not Avatar, but it's hardly a flop.
Minnie Driver irritates me but she was a decent actress and very famous.

EdgeOfACoin · 17/08/2021 18:05

She was an Oscar nominee, up for best supporting actress. Hardly a 'bit part'.

I am about 3 years older than you, OP - Minnie Driver was very famous in the UK at the time. I barely watched any films and even I knew her and could have recognised her on the street.

A quick look on IMDB gives a rundown of the awards she was nominated for and those she won.

I understand that kids in their 20s aren't familiar with her, but it's quite clear that most people over 35 remember her for being a big star at the time.

You just sound a bit bitter that very few people agree with you.

''Grosse Pointe Blank was massive in the USA, especially in my (teen) age group.''

Ah that's funny. In my memory it was pretty popular so I checked on Wikipedia, which happens to back me up. In fact it even says this:

The film earned an estimated $6,870,397 in its opening weekend, ranking number four at the box office.

and talks about the positive reviews. You really were too young to know.

MyOtherProfile · 17/08/2021 19:31

Just seen @SocialAffairsAndWoodlandFolk said the same!

Ozanj · 17/08/2021 19:32

She is more famous in the USA.
