minnie driver claiming she was ''sick of being super famous''

I saw this in a headline article today online. Eh when I think of ''super famous'' I think Brad Pitt, Jenifer Aniston, Tom Cruise, J-Lo... generally people the majority of people would be familiar with and recognise their face/be a household name.

AIBU to think this b list actress is or never was ''super famous''? I struggle to think of projects she was in and I wouldn't even recognise her if I saw her on the street or on a picture. I am 35 btw too incase any1 thinks I'm too young so remember the 90s well.

This is an entertainingly weird thread 😂 I'm Team Minnie, FWIW.

SallyWD · 15/08/2021 21:59

I'm 46 and she was very famous for a while. She was everywhere. Definitely a lot more famous than Mena Suvari and Neve Campbell. Yes I'd say that for a while, Minnie Driver was super famous.

Griefmonster · 15/08/2021 22:05

At least a decade older than OP and she was indeed very famous in 90s.

Rainbow21 · 15/08/2021 22:53

She was quite famous as I still remember the shock at a Finn Brothers (ex Crowded House) concert in Edinburgh in 2004 when the surprise support act was Minnie Driver 😲. She was a reasonable singer but I remember I was completely gobsmacked at a Hollywood actress being on the stage

Bertiebiscuit · 15/08/2021 22:55

She wishes

BeefSupreme · 15/08/2021 22:56

Did you have 140 TVs to go with your 140 VCRs?

UndertheCedartree · 15/08/2021 22:59

I remember her being pretty famous for a time, definitely.

me109f · 15/08/2021 23:42

She has a very distinctive look and she was nominated for an Oscar, a lovely actress and recogniseable everywhere. Brilliant name.

SequinsandStiIettos · 16/08/2021 04:05

Thanks for the actual quote limewire
So the whole paragraph is not dissimilar to the guardian interview - both look at how fame is measured (what we've been doing on this thread) and she refuses to let others put her down just because her success has been a marathon not a sprint, essentially.
She was talking about a small window in the past in both.
I am not sure the OP even read the story. They just looked at the headline without context.
Anyway, I have just watched Minnie Driver on Amazon Prime series 2 of Modern Love, episode one and thought she was great in it and also that I wished I looked that good. Recommended.

PinniGig · 16/08/2021 05:08

She was a big star and well known mid to late 90's for sure especially after Good Will Hunting. In a more recent TV series "Speechless" which is a shit sitcom aired a lot on E4.

Has such a distinctive, unmistakable appearance I'm sure she struggled to piss in peace during the height of her fame.

I think and genuinely feel bad for anyone in the spotlight and for what they have to endure whether they're the A-Listers you describe or just regular everyday folk that ended up on the news for something and were hounded and harassed until it got old.

Me too. And yes it's weird this thread has rumbled on like it has.
KittyWindbag · 16/08/2021 06:36

Woah YABU I was a kid and I remember her being famous! I was very comforted by her actual normal person nose.

How can anyone not know Good Will Hunting?? She was so likeable in that film, the film is great! She has the hair and the freckles. Way more memorable to me than neve Campbell or Mena Suvari, definitely a better actor. They were like teen movie idols.

GreatAuntEmily · 16/08/2021 07:44

The original article was about Minnie looking back and stating that she was sick and tired of being famous at the time of her fame.
The OP's headline implies differently.

littlealex2021 · 16/08/2021 10:55

She has a very large head/face! I actually totally confuse her with Andie McDowall who is in Groundhog Day and Grosse Point Blank, and plays the absolute *** in Four Weddings, messing Hugh around - I can't bear either of them, their is something off about both of them!

What are you even talking about?

Is this Matt Damon again?

YankeeinKingArthursCourt · 16/08/2021 12:10

@Balgoresboy

This is a fascinating thread. With respect OP, your perception of her "fame" in the mid '90s as a very young teen in the UK is very different to the reality of Hollywood and actual US popular culture at that time ( nevermind how many movies you saw etc).

I ( & others on this thread) actually lived in the US at the time and were in our early 20s going to cinemas and actual events with these people ( not just watching it as a young teen from thousands of miles away).

So yes, she was "super famous" by US Hollywood standards at the time. Probably less so in the UK at the time.

VivaDixie · 16/08/2021 14:23

I agree with your post but just to correct this:

So yes, she was "super famous" by US Hollywood standards at the time. Probably less so in the UK at the time.

She really was super famous in the UK at the time too Smile

Mrsmadevans · 16/08/2021 14:25

She must be happy to be in the B list category now , great stuff !

LimberlostLark · 16/08/2021 15:59

Minnie Driver: so not famous that she's managed to attract 570 posts talking about it Grin

Hardly indication of her fame though. If it was someone really famous there wouldn't even be a thread about it.
LadyMonicaBaddingham · 16/08/2021 17:50

😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

lboogy · 16/08/2021 19:07

The threshold for super famous is pretty low. Super famous is Beyoncé, Madonna, Michael Jackson, Tom cruise , Robert denero , Denzel etc, not some actress from the 90s with bit part roles ...

Balgoresboy · 16/08/2021 19:14

''not some actress from the 90s with bit part roles ...''

yet according to this thread md headlines the few big films she starred in like Sleepers or Good Will Hunting when in reality she was support in them and in Sleepers her part was forgettable and many on imdb used to say pointless.

Laquila · 16/08/2021 19:16

How did you feel about Minnie Driver before you started this thread, OP?

FrangipaniDeLaSqueegeeMop · 16/08/2021 19:17

AAAAAARGH OP give it up! Why are you still banging on about what a handful of IMDB posters thought of her (not minor) role in Sleepers?

Dozens of people have actually said you were too young to notice when she was actually super famous in the mid-90's. You know you'd come off a lot better if you just said 'I was wrong' rather than trying to convince more knowledgable people they're the ones who are wrong.
