minnie driver claiming she was ''sick of being super famous''

I saw this in a headline article today online. Eh when I think of ''super famous'' I think Brad Pitt, Jenifer Aniston, Tom Cruise, J-Lo... generally people the majority of people would be familiar with and recognise their face/be a household name.

AIBU to think this b list actress is or never was ''super famous''? I struggle to think of projects she was in and I wouldn't even recognise her if I saw her on the street or on a picture. I am 35 btw too incase any1 thinks I'm too young so remember the 90s well.

But Christian Slater and Dan Ackroyd were in lots of things once you start looking.

Dan Ackroyd was in Grosse Point Blank for a start.

Both are credited with being over 100 films/TV things.

muddyford · 13/08/2021 08:40

I thought this was going to be a parking thread...that super-famous, eh?

mummumumumumumumumumum · 13/08/2021 08:44

I remember Minnie Driver and I think i would recognise her in the street. I love Neve Campbell and was in a film she was in (as an extra) she was a huge crush of mine.

ZenNudist · 13/08/2021 08:49

I would say that global fame is super famous. Grosse point blank is a very famous film (saw serendipity the other day and was thinking I'd have to rewatch GPB) I'd forgotten she was in good will hunting but again that's a classic so is going to be around a long time.

You've really got something against her right? Strange as you weren't even around much in her hey day. She was everywhere. Probably because she was English so we heard more about her.

She was always badged as annoying back then.

Did Harvey weinstein do anything to her career? I can't remember if her name came up in that mess.

ThursdayLastWeek · 13/08/2021 08:49

I’ve just spent this whole thread think Neve Campbell was Selma Blair.

Bawse · 13/08/2021 08:51

@poullou

Well speak for yourself then, your experience of being 12 is not mine

Rather like Minnie's experience of fame is not the same as your perception of it.

You must be on a wind up OP. Nobody can care this much about something that doesn't affect them at all.

I'd seen every movie- you name it. It was my interest and passion and still is

I think this is the issue OP, you’re obsessed with film success and cannot separate out individual success which is not a mathematical equation based on box office figures and minutes on screen

burritofan · 13/08/2021 08:52

Presumably Minnie Driver is speaking not from the OP’s POV but her own, where I imagine an Oscar nomination and a relationship with one of the new hot young things of Hollywood, paparazzi, magazine covers, red carpets, does feel super famous, vs normal life. Just because it was fleeting doesn’t mean it didn’t happen.

Plus her fame was before the internet really took off, which has changed and diluted who’s famous, how, why and for how long.

Anyway, I was 17 when Good Will Hunting came out, and Minnie Driver was absolutely IT for a short while. I’m still fond of her, particularly for calling out Matt Damon over his grim Harvey Weinstein defences.

NewNameADayKeepsSpiesAtBay · 13/08/2021 08:53

This is quite a mean spirited thread. Just because you don’t remember her OP, doesn’t mean she was never famous. I’d definitely recognise her in the street and can remember her being the lead actress in stuff. She was a big name at one time and I bet the press intrusion was huge for her.

Let’s not knock someone down just because their experience or perception doesn’t entirely match our own.

storkstalk · 13/08/2021 08:53

32 and no idea who Minnie driver is. I recognise the name but would have to google her

DappledThings · 13/08/2021 08:55

Just put the GPB soundtrack on Spotify to get me through through first hour of pivot table joy this morning

Limewine · 13/08/2021 08:56

I read this article in the Times - she was sick of being super famous at the time - she was super famous at the time - not now. Also read the very stupid comments that followed the article - I really need to stop reading the comments they give me the rage, full of small minded idiots.

Notdoingthis · 13/08/2021 08:56

Of course she is famous.

Boood · 13/08/2021 08:58

OK, but then the same article mentions that she is doing the interview from one of the three houses her work has paid for. You’re setting the bar pretty high if you don’t consider that to be a successful career. The fact that she chose not to keep pushing until she was A-list, and live a life that makes her happy and she still has three houses, makes her more not less successful imo.

PattyPan · 13/08/2021 08:59

Grosse point blank is a very famous film

I’d never heard of it until this thread - I guess it doesn’t have enduring fame for people in subsequent generations in the same way GWH does, which I have seen.

imacuddler · 13/08/2021 09:05

She was super famous!

Bizarre that you are annoyed by her!

mizu · 13/08/2021 09:07

She was super famous, I really liked her, refreshingly different. She was in all sorts of things.

SpeakingFranglais · 13/08/2021 09:10

Minnie Driver is British?

Tbh, I couldn’t pick her out in a line up of two.

Hemingwaycat · 13/08/2021 09:11

I know who she is but I’d never consider her an A list star, maybe this was different in the 90s? Not sure but she definitely isn’t hugely famous now and I’d argue she hasn’t been for about 20 years.

DeflatedGinDrinker · 13/08/2021 09:18

I have no idea who she is.

BorderlineHappy · 13/08/2021 09:18

I have this with Kate Beckinsale. I can't tell you how often I've looked up an actress playing a particular part to find out it is Kate Beckinsale. Even now, I can't picture her face.
Mine is Michelle Williams I couldn't pick her out of a line up

DeflatedGinDrinker · 13/08/2021 09:19

I thought this thread was about a mini driver. Thought it was something to do with car racing.

Mandalay246 · 13/08/2021 09:21

She was quite well known, but it was a long time ago and I certainly would never have thought of her as "super famous" and especially not now.

flameycakes · 13/08/2021 09:23

All this about being a celebrity and where here films got to in the box office. Minnie Driver was an actress not a celebrity. The press followed her around at her height of fame, they shamed her when she was dumped on tv. Not surprised she walked away from it all. Quality over quantity, every time!

ohfook · 13/08/2021 09:29

I think she was famous for a while and after Matt Damon dumped her on TV would have attracted a lot of unwanted paparazzi attention too which can't have been nice.
