Hair chopped off and I'm upset.

Disclaimer. I know I should have spoken up when sitting watching my hair being cut off but I was in shock and even by that time it would have been too late, it had been cut.

My regular hairdresser has relocated so I had to find somewhere new. I saw someone looking for models, all fully supervised so I thought I'd go for it. Long hair down my back. Asked for a bit below my shoulders with some shape. What I got was midway between my shoulders and chin, no shape. I hate it. My face is fatter than it should be and longer hair let me hide a bit. Now I can't. The supervisor came and kept chopping more away too. I can't look at myself in the mirror. I keep telling myself it will grow. I think it may be uneven too, but I can't look long enough to know for sure.

I know exactly what you mean! About six months ago, I had my hair cut by a student for free at a hairdressing school, and it was awful! It was uneven, too long & too short in all the wrong places! I never went there again!

Mummadeze · 12/08/2021 17:50

I had my hair cut the day before I started a new job in the hope of giving myself some confidence. She cut it so short and in a masculine style it made me feel like a man! I was gutted and had the opposite feeling starting my new job than I’d wanted. I just had to tell myself at least I looked like a power woman and sucked it up. It grew back obviously but I sympathise as it is a horrible feeling. I would say experiment with your make up and clothes and earrings etc as you can help the situation by doing this a bit.

Cajanz · 12/08/2021 18:06

I bet it looks better than you think, it’s probably a shock for now. You could always have some hair extensions till
It grows a bit? It’s a horrible feeling though when this happens …

LexCake · 12/08/2021 18:14

@User44

.
Hahahaha that is exactly me! Thought it was just me!

Though I never look as good as the pics on the top, TBF

Mumgonenuts2020 · 12/08/2021 18:16

I know exactly how you feel Blushafter my second DC in 2013 we moved to a new area and I asked for a trim and I was conned in to having highlights, go short and have layers as they kept chopping it was bloody awful!! I wasn’t convinced I really wanted it either the worse thing was the layers, it’s 2021 and have never been happy with my hair as I am older now too it just isn’t growing quickly anymore, the highlights and layers ruined my hair especially as it was long and in good condition when I went into that salon in 2015! My mum always said don’t have layers in your hair, I know why now!! I couldn’t complain and really have not been happy with it ever since. One good thing for you at least you didn’t have layers and hopefully it will grow quicker and you can put it up. Mine isn’t thick enough and grows back all thin on the ends even one side is longer than the other, I just laugh about it now!! 😄

nonevernotever · 12/08/2021 18:21

When she was younger (late teems I think) my DSIL apparently came back from the hairdresser weeping buckets and with an actual carrier bag over her head because she hated what they'd done so much....

lindyloo57 · 12/08/2021 18:22

I had this happen to me a while back, you see a stranger with lovely hair ask where she had it cut, book the same hairdressers to ask for same cut, come out with a much shorter look, I hated it, until it grew a couple of inches,

Sweetpea1532 · 12/08/2021 18:42

@Rollintodarkness
I'm so sorry that the salon didn't do what you'd asked. Flowers

Ddot · 12/08/2021 18:43

You can do a lot with hair clips, trust me I am forever putting up with hair massacres. The clips that look like small bull dog clips are great

user1471543094 · 12/08/2021 18:46

I'm living this at the minute too. Right down to feeling my face just isn't thin enough for a short hairstyle. I've had soooo many nights out/events in past few weeks and I've hated them because of my hair.
It also wasn't what I asked for.

DagenhamRoundhouse · 12/08/2021 19:01

I lost all mine to chemo some years ago. Don't worry, it does grow back! And it made getting ready in the mornings extra quick. Just plonk on the wig.

HarrisMcCoo · 12/08/2021 19:12

I got the pixie cut years ago as I fancied a change from having long hair. I thought it was fab and it took no time at all to grow out when I fancied growing that into a bob. Don't worry, your hair does grow back!!

Oh OP I feel your pain ! The picture of where it was, where you wanted it and where it’s ended up is precisely why I haven’t been to a hairdresser for over 15 years. I know it will grow like mine did before but I also know it won’t make you feel better right now as it doesn’t happen over night but it will get to where you want to be

senoritarita · 12/08/2021 20:13

Hi OP

The good news is that bobs are really on trend and i bet you end up loving it. Really long hair on a 40 something can be a bit frumpy imo

Although its not playing ball at the mo, and bouncing up, it will settle down. Try styling it into a bob by flicking ends under with ghds

Itll grow in no time

FatAnkles · 12/08/2021 20:47

I have "shit hair" which is straight on top and wavy at the ends, flicks under one side and out the other, and I've got a widows peak so yes, I am a "difficult client". Hairdressers quite often cut my hair disregarding my warnings about my shit hair and yes, it looks fucking fabulous in the salon hut immediately outside in the natural elements it turns to shit again.

I recently decided to get my hair cut back a little. It was down my back and looking a mess, having not had it cut for over a year. Because of my current mobility issues I went to the nearest hairdresser. Lots of previous hairdressers have failed but anyway...I wanted it cut to the bottom of my neck plus a few layers because it's very thick. She cut it chin length, into a bob, despite my warnings, and too thin, so now each time I go out it immediately gets in my eyes.

Hairdressers always cut my hair into bobs and I'm damned if I know why. I am plus sized with a round face, is this the hairdresser cut out and keep style for wonen of a certain age and jean size?

So I still have shit hair but now I can't see where I'm going. Why do I bother? I'm now going to grow it out out a bit and try and find another stylist. Hmm

Mummyoflittledragon · 12/08/2021 21:10

You have thick hair. Is the cut all one length or basic layers!? If your hair doesn’t look good, perhaps it just needs thinning out.

I have quite a lot of hair and couldn’t possibly have a Bob without having it thinned a bit. It doesn’t make the hair shorter, it just makes it bouncier and frame your face better.

I had a Bob a while back and the cut pre thinning out looks like a bowl cut. Thinned out, I look relatively pretty even though I’m very overweight with a bit of a fat face and am and middle aged.

Perhaps you could post what part of the country you’re in and mumsnetters could suggest a hairdresser? You don’t have to do it on this thread. Could go for a name change etc.

Lovely13 · 12/08/2021 21:22

My hairdresser whom I like does a good job. But when he went into rant over ex boyfriend sleeping with his friend, my hair paid the price. 😔 But it grew back. Haven’t been to a hairdresser in two years btw. Bought some scissors. I’m quite good at it!

Toomuchtrouble4me · 12/08/2021 21:29

Just for perspective.
My lovely cousin got a bald patch in her hair, 5months later every hair on her head, and body, had fallen out, pubes, eyelashes, the lot. For no reason, just sudden alopecia. It will never grow back. Yours will, get over it and count your blessings. X

MereDintofPandiculation · 12/08/2021 22:00

Toomuchtrouble4me I know your intentions are good but I'm not sure that helps. It just adds to feeling bad about your hair, feeling bad because you're being selfish enough to feel bad about it.

Ddot · 12/08/2021 22:05

I find a little sun makes mine grow much faster, I have very curly hair and have never experienced a decent hair cut so buck up have a fiddle with it and stand tall. Get some lippy on 😷oh maybe lots of mascara instead.

Kanaloa · 12/08/2021 22:07

@Toomuchtrouble4me

Well my cousin’s legs fell off. At least your cousin can walk, she should get over it.

Just because someone else has it worse doesn’t mean we can’t be upset about things that happen to us. It’s upsetting having a bad haircut and it isn’t really that helpful to be told someone else has no hair so you should get over it.

Kanaloa · 12/08/2021 22:07

I don’t know if this actually works but someone told me if you rinse your hair with micellar water it makes it grow really fast and strong? Maybe worth a try.

Ddot · 12/08/2021 22:14

If your hair is wrong you feel shit. I sympathise I really do. Go see another hairdresser, get it even and ask for advise on how to style, it's all you can do. I'm sure a hairdresser can sort and you could get extensions if you feel that you can't live with the length.

KidneyBeans · 12/08/2021 22:31

Please explain how rinsing your hair with glycerin and surfactants makes the root within your scalp grow faster?
