Hair chopped off and I'm upset.

Disclaimer. I know I should have spoken up when sitting watching my hair being cut off but I was in shock and even by that time it would have been too late, it had been cut.

My regular hairdresser has relocated so I had to find somewhere new. I saw someone looking for models, all fully supervised so I thought I'd go for it. Long hair down my back. Asked for a bit below my shoulders with some shape. What I got was midway between my shoulders and chin, no shape. I hate it. My face is fatter than it should be and longer hair let me hide a bit. Now I can't. The supervisor came and kept chopping more away too. I can't look at myself in the mirror. I keep telling myself it will grow. I think it may be uneven too, but I can't look long enough to know for sure.

I have just got back from my regular 8 week cut. My hair is the perfect length and is lovely and swishy.

Once you've found the right hairdresser, never let them go! That said,, I've never had a problem with any of the stylists at this particular hairdresser and I've been through a few as they move onto other salons.

Treaclepie19 · 11/08/2021 10:54

Poor you OP :(
I hope it grows out quickly for you!

I've got an amazing hairdresser currently and I will follow her if she moves 😂
I'm even trusting her to dye it on the weekend and that's saying something!

My hairdresser & I agree in advance by showing 2 or 3 fingers together - his are fatter fingers, so 2 of us = 3 of mine, but it's a really good visual way of agreeing how much he is going to take off. Appreciate it's harder if you are going from long to a specific cut - but take a leaf out of Fleabag's sister & bring a picture or two of the cut you envisage, it's often at that point the stylist can point out you don't have the right type of hair for it..

BrilloPaddy · 11/08/2021 11:10

I had been going to the same hairdresser for 4 years..... never had a bad cut but on my appointment she was running late after a wedding session and obviously hadn't had a break/lunch. I had grown a bob out in lockdown, but it was too long so I asked her to thin it out and take an inch off the length. Somehow I ended up with the very short bob cut that I'd just spent 18 months growing out....... and instead of thinning with layers, she'd used thinning scissors underneath and when I looked at home I was almost bald in a couple of patches. She'd styled it well but when I washed it myself I gasped in horror! I still can't believe I paid £55 for such a bloody awful cut.

I went to another salon about 4 weeks later, where they said "oh that's not too bad" until they clipped up the top layers and said "wtf"............ new hairdresser was brill and just cut round it the best she could, and 2 cuts later it's starting to resemble the choppy longer lengths that I wanted in the 1st place. The hair that was thinned is growing at snails pace though.....

@victoriaspongecake

Post a photo? I bet it looks far better than you imagine. How old are you? In my opinion long hair looks awful on anyone over the age of 30 anyway so maybe they have done you a favour?

How is Sophia Vergara still 49? I thought she was the same age as me!

Waitinginmycar · 11/08/2021 11:34

OP get some products for massaging your scalp and for promoting hair growth - perhaps the salon could give you something to help put this right? Once had my hair cut way too short, and regular scalp massages definitely helped speed up growth. I also took some vitamin B supplements which is meant to support hair and nails - frankly I tried everything I could as I looked like Ronald McDonald (I have curly wavy hair which does not look its best when too short)

Cryalot2 · 11/08/2021 11:36

Poor you Flowers
Its a horrible feeling. I got my own cut from long (mid back length) to above collar length. I did not want to, but had to. I was having medical treatment ( not for cancer) but needed my very long hair put well up before the treatments which were several times a week. I struggled to get it up neatly and thought I was doing ok until dd made comments that I knew I had no option.

I hated it and thankfully grew quite quickly. Lost a fair bit last year thanks to covid and sported a huge bald spot. My lovely hairdresser told me to use Alcepen double strength caffeine shampoo. Massage well into scalp.
This helped no end and hair grew back quicker than normal. My hair does tend to grow quickly.
You get the shampoo in Boots . Well worth it.
Get it cut into a decent shape which might help .
Use pretty hair accessories to get you through this .
Hoping this helps.

Thank you all. Putting my hair up makes me look like a schoolgirl (not the 42 year old I am...gasp, over 30 with long hair). Same really with half up half down. It's been cut at exactly the annoying length where it won't sit properly and won't flick under or stay straight, so parts are under, parts are straight and parts are flicking out...which is why I wanted to avoid this length. Shorter and it could be styled more, but not with my excess weight, below shoulder and it would sit right. It should look better by Christmas hopefully!

Have you got Lego lady hair as mentioned in this thread?

Claymorekick · 11/08/2021 11:56

A colleague of mine told me a phrase which has stuck with me - the difference between a bad haircut and a good haircut is 2 weeks - and it is so true! I have had fringes cut far too short but within 2 weeks, it starts to look reasonable again.

I know how awful it feels - can you tie it up/strategic use of hairclips for the next 2 weeks?

CareBear50 · 11/08/2021 13:02

Oh OP this happened me many years ago and I was due to be a bridesmaid the next week

I said nothing at the time.......same as you.....I was in shock and fuming! She kept on cutting away all my lovely hair!! It looked awful.

I vowed never ever to be a hair model again......and I never have!. Thankfully it has now all grown back......20 years later 😆

I will never forget the stylists face.....utter cow!

Polkadots2021 · 11/08/2021 13:44

@Rollintodarkness

Oh you're all being so lovely. Thank you. I figured once it was cut there was nothing they could do because it was gone. I don't want more hair cut off, so I don't know that going back will help at all. Such a mess!
I actually bet it looks fab but your brain can't cope with it at the mo because it looks so different!
Psychonabike · 11/08/2021 17:11

@Bythemillpond

As you can see from the people quoting you after your post in the thread, it really is ambiguous. You pretty much proved my point.

And I have no idea what you mean by "neck length". I have a long thin neck. There are at least 5 inches between my ear and the bottom of my neck...and some people consider their neck to extend down to the sternal notch...so...

Rollintodarkness · 11/08/2021 22:26

@polkadots2021 Unfortunately not. I have been told very gently by friends who care but don't lie to me.
I know it is just hair and it will grow back, and I will get over it. I do have a wedding to go to next week so need to figure something out quickly.
To anyone who has also had a dodgy cut, I'm sorry and I empathise. We will get through this. What doesn't kill us will eventually grow a little longer!

milkyaqua · 12/08/2021 02:53

I think most people, most tiny children even, know that your head sits on your neck and below your neck are your shoulders. Head, shoulders, knees and toes.

It is not a mystery where shoulders are.

If there is any uncertainty to a hairdresser (how?!! it's their job) what a client means by shoulder-length, or how much a client's individual hair will spring up shorter from a shoulder length cut, then they should have a discussion. But when one says 'shoulder length' it does not mean some random position partway up the neck. You don't go to a mechanic for a set of new tyres and get given an oil change as you weren't specific enough when you said tyres.

BasiliskStare · 12/08/2021 03:53

@Rollintodarkness

For wedding
If you have lovely thick hair could you get it styled into a sort of Jackie O / Marilyn Monroe 50s 60s type style which I think looks stylish. & it would frame your face and look chic.
I understand your concern - & I get there is only so much you can hear hair only grows one way ( i.e. longer ) but to be honest I think the ubiquitous waist length hair extensions ( NOT saying you have ) straight hair is a bit past its sell by date.
I think if you could get some volume and some bits round your face I bet you would look fantastic.
Whilst you are waiting for hair to grow look up actresses / people who have hair above shoulder length - many of them look beautiful. If you have enough to frame your face I bet you will look great whilst waiting for it to grow. & who knows - you may just decide you don't want it that long. Or you do & then time will sort it out.

sashh · 12/08/2021 07:07

OP

Been there, I actually left the salon without paying.

I agree that it is at an awkward length, I think if I was you I'd get it cut into a bob for the wedding. Or go with the 50's look a PP said, google Elizabeth Taylor.

Strangely I'm quite happy to have my hair go from quite long to short to donate it, I think it's the fact you didn't want it doing that makes it awful not the actual cut itself.

phishy · 12/08/2021 07:09

Ah that’s shit, sorry, OP.

I have long, straight hair and the amount of times hairdressers have fucked up a simple haircut (no layers etc) is unreal.

Now I just get my hair trimmed, and I always tell them to take off 1 inch, as they take more off anyway.

Possible silver lining - you hair may grow out stronger now?

DoWhatYouWantToAndShh · 12/08/2021 11:14

The good thing about having a weird haircut is that it forces you to reach outside the comfort zone and do new things.
Here are some wedding inspired hair ideas. I know you're a guest but there are lots of things you can do with it.
It will have grown by December. I'd go get it professionally styled in the day or week before To you what to do. You could so that now, go to a good salon and get them to style it and show you something cool to do with it.
We've all been there. I've had fringe disasters, stripey highlights. Etc.
You'll be ok.

Long hair over 30. Hilarious.

My mother died a couple of years ago aged 80. She could sit on her hair up to the day she died. It was thick and beautifully silver. She wore it up in many sophisticated and intricate bun styles with hair accessories that looked wonderful. Everywhere she went people would comment on how stunning it was and frankly it knocked years off her.

You might choose a Lego head but the rest of us will crack on with our own choices.

MrsToothyBitch · 12/08/2021 11:41

I'm so sorry, OP, it's an awful shock when they do that, isn't it? I would go back and say something, I think! Even with the wait 2 weeks for it to peak rule, it's much shorter than you asked for.

I'm still recovering from my first cut after lock down. Usually awesome hairdresser took nothing off the much overgrown length- I told her to be a bit conservative but she really took off nothing... except for the fringey bit. I have a very small fringey bit on one side that falls around my lower cheek so I can blow dry & lift to my cheek bone but it will still fall in with the rest and she knows this. She took a much bigger chunk - enough that it falls on both sides of my face and chopped it to my cheekbones! She blended it in pretty well but when I did it myself I noticed and burst into tears. It really knocked my confidence! I rescheduled immediately to try & salvage & she left before the apt. The next girl took a bit more off, reshaped it & left my fringe alone but it took me weeks- up to my next apt with someone else to resettle my parting. I'm still having to wait for my fringe & the randomly chopped bits to regrow fully & I still hate it 4 months later. It's sooooooo slow.

Lego head😂

MissyB1 · 12/08/2021 14:19

Hmmm that’s an awkward length, it’s an “in between haircut” I have no idea why a hairdresser would cut it to that length. How irritating!

Do you own a heated styling brush? I think you might need one to style it nicely. Don’t vet fall for those “model” cheap rates again! I avoid them like the plague.
