Hair chopped off and I'm upset.

Disclaimer. I know I should have spoken up when sitting watching my hair being cut off but I was in shock and even by that time it would have been too late, it had been cut.

My regular hairdresser has relocated so I had to find somewhere new. I saw someone looking for models, all fully supervised so I thought I'd go for it. Long hair down my back. Asked for a bit below my shoulders with some shape. What I got was midway between my shoulders and chin, no shape. I hate it. My face is fatter than it should be and longer hair let me hide a bit. Now I can't. The supervisor came and kept chopping more away too. I can't look at myself in the mirror. I keep telling myself it will grow. I think it may be uneven too, but I can't look long enough to know for sure.

Could you ask them to weave in some extensions somehow until it grows a bit?

Worth considering?

ZombeaArthur · 11/08/2021 07:38

I ended up with an extreme haircut a few years ago. I had a longer pixie cut which I needed tidying up. The stylist clearly couldn’t get it even as she kept taking more off each side until I was left with an extremely short cut, no more than an inch long anywhere. Luckily it did suit me and didn’t take too long to grown into something I liked, but I remember walking out of the salon in complete shock feeling quite exposed.

The worst part is, the colour she did was fantastic, possibly the best I’ve ever had, but there way no was I was going back again after that cut.

notanothertakeaway · 11/08/2021 07:40

To an extent, I think that's a risk you take if your hair is cut by a trainee

But I'm sure you could go back and ask for it to be tidied up by someone more experienced

sanfranny · 11/08/2021 07:41

@sanfranny

OP, If you have even a little bit of length, try pinning it up. At least then when you catch sight of yourself you will just look like a long haired person with hair up.

Had the same situation as you many many times when younger and this was what I always did until I got a little more length on it. Some people don't seem to mind but if you like a bit of length in your hair, having it chopped off is heartbreaking. 💐💐

Should add that like many on here I haven't been near a hairdresser in decades and cut and colour my own hair now. It looks fab if I do say so myself.

Post a photo? I bet it looks far better than you imagine. How old are you? In my opinion long hair looks awful on anyone over the age of 30 anyway so maybe they have done you a favour?
Ridiculous comment. Long hair on anyone over 30? So like, most of the bloody female population?
onelittlefrog · 11/08/2021 07:49

Well there's nothing you can do about your hair now but I hope you didn't pay!

I would go back and ask for a refund if you have, it obviously wasn't what you asked for.

sadperson16 · 11/08/2021 08:02

I would cut your losses ( sorry), go somewhere else which you have rsearched and get a great cut.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 11/08/2021 08:07

And once over the initial shock OP, watch

Wexone · 11/08/2021 08:25

@spacecadet you need to ask for an undercut. I have long thick hair nearly down as far as my bra strap. I was always told you need lots of layers to thin it out and take the heaviness out of it. I ended up with a mullet like you and it look like i had two sets of hair, plus layers would stick out. I found a great hairdresser years ago who told me i should get an undercut instead so it takes the heaviness out of the under part and the top sits on it keep it down. I had to go through the pain of growing my layers out and keeping it all one length but once it was done it was like a weight lifted off my hair and so much easier to manage. I try every so often to go somewhere else as its quiet an expensive hairdresser but no one can cut it right so keep with her

Allthelights · 11/08/2021 08:33

When I had a bad hairstyle (whole thing cut with a razor blade, no scissors in sight) I went to a different hairdresser who cut all the wispy bits off and I was left with a short bob. Would that help?

Yogateacherherehello · 11/08/2021 08:36

I feel your pain.

I made the mistake of going to a salon in a different city on a whim, all fine, the stylist did exactly what I asked for, longer hair, keeping the natural curl.

Then I went back to my regular mobile hairdresser who gave me what I can only describe as a punishment cut.

She rubbished what the salon had done (to be fair it did look uneven at the back when she pointed it out, although had by then grown for 2 months).

I'm now back to the bob I spent growing out in lockdowns.

How the hell do you find someone who's good and doesn't do this???

nettie434 · 11/08/2021 08:38

It will grow back, Rollintodarkness and I am sure it looks better than you think. My face is too fat and too square and personally, I think hair that is shaped slightly more around my face makes it look better. The hair cut will have got rid of split ends etc so it's not all bad.

Next time I'd find a photo of the length you're aiming for to show the hairdresser. Good hairdressers also show you the amount they are planning to cut so you can agree on the length so ask them to do this before they take their scissors out.

DoctorSnortles · 11/08/2021 08:39

I had a disastrous haircut recently. It looks truly awful. I still look at myself in the mirror and think, 'Why would he do that to me?!"

Shit, I'm over 40 and I didn't get the memo! Did anyone else? I guess I'm going to have to book in for a shampoo and set and buy some elasticated slacks now. 😂
Thewinterofdiscontent · 11/08/2021 08:53

Horrible feeling.

Either tie it up as PP suggests so it still looks like you with long hair but tied up or get it highlighted/ coloured so it looks like totally different hair. The advantage of shorter hair is it’s much easier to dye. You could embrace that whilst you are waiting for it to grow out?

Netty909 · 11/08/2021 08:54

This has happened to me so many times, that now I only have a dry cut and one length, just cut straight. No layers. But I still got caught out last time. Due to lockdown I hadn’t had my hair cut for over 6 months and was quite dry so said just cut off the dry ends, which turned out to be about 4 inches! Just above shoulder length, I have to take my glasses off during part of it so really didn’t see until it was too late! I also have a fat face so I was thought oh ffs! Not again! I tried this, with a side parting. I think it is called a Hollywood wave? Just wait till my hair is nearly dry then wrap it around a dressing gown belt. It looked really nice and I got lots of compliments. If not, I do feel your pain, hopefully will not take too long to grow to how you want it.

This is why Im scared of hairdressers, I have mid chest length hair and no matter what I ask for (which has NEVER been a bob) I always come out with an awful bob between chin and shoulder length.

Bobs dont suit me and actually take quite a lot of styling and effort to make look good and I really dont have the time, energy, money or skill to be faffing with my hair like that daily.

Im sure they do this because I have really thin frizzy hair and 'shorter looks thicker' and they always say 'see better without the frizz' but it doesnt actually look 'good' though, I have never requested 'thicker' looking hair and I LOVE my frizz (it does make my hair look bigg plus its curly and I like curls over straight hair).

Are you 12?

This is the kind of comment someone whose so young they think 25 is 'passed it' would say lol.

Im 32 and the youngest of my friends and only know 1 woman who has had short hair (a pixie cut she had had since her teens) and even she has grown itto shoulder length since lockdown started.

Such a ridiculous comment, the mass majority of woman in their 30s have long hair.

JesusIsAnyNameFree · 11/08/2021 10:10

Who knew it was time to snip our hair off when we turn 30🤷‍♀️ queens hairstyle now, is it?

I didn't realise there was an age limit to long hair 😂 37 and long hair here, not everyone suits short hair.
ErrolTheDragon · 11/08/2021 10:19

There's always at least one ageist idiot on hair length threads.
Mine gets trimmed back to just below the shoulder about twice a year normally, is straight and is fair with natural highlights. I seem to be the exception to the rule that hairdressers always cut too much off so I guess they must think it looks okay at my requested length or longer. I'm 60.Grin

milkyaqua · 11/08/2021 10:21

Always a staunch hairdresser apologist/denier, too.

HPLikecraft · 11/08/2021 10:29

Gosh, my BF who is 60 has the most lovely long auburn hair, absolutely stunning. I've just sent her a quick text telling her to go lop the whole lot of urgently Hmm.

OP, I feel your pain. I have a strange big face and I'd hate to be so exposed. I cut my own hair, having never had a haircut I liked in all of my 53 years.

I imagine it looks better than you think, and you won't think it so bad when the shock has worn off, perhaps? It will grow back too. Smile

GladAllOver · 11/08/2021 10:31

Another avoider of hairdressers here. I have long hair. DH cuts an inch or two across the back when the ends get straggly, and I trim the fringe on my forehead. Must have saved thousands on hairdressers.

Pedalpushers · 11/08/2021 10:40

I've come to the conclusion that the quality of hairdressing has just declined over the years.

I used to love going and would always love my hair, now it seems no matter where I go I end up with layers the wrong length, frizz which should be impossible on my poker straight sleek hair, a blow-dry that looks flat and doesn't hold. I usually dye my hair with a box dye but decided to visit a recommended, specialist colourist for my lockdown roots, not only could she not lighten my hair as much as a £6 Clairol, it was brassy and unblended for £100.

Just think OP, at the rate hair grows, your hair will be back down to your shoulders in about 3-4 months, barely any time at all.
