To feel so sorry for anyone on a British holiday right now

It’s been raining for about a week where I live. I’ve just woken up to yet more heavy rain this morning. It must be utterly miserable for anyone holidaying in the UK right now. You have my sympathies! Hope you’re managing to have a decent time despite the grim weather.

We surf in all weather so not bothered by a bit of rain

squashyhat · 09/08/2021 11:23

Doing a tour of Yorkshire with 5 friends next week so I'm not expecting hot and dry. No kids so posh hotels, nice restaurants and bars, a bit of culture and history and some shopping. We should have been in Japan but hey, no need to feel sorry for me Grin

VividImagination · 09/08/2021 11:23

We are in the Scottish Highlands. We had very heavy rain on Friday morning but it had brightened up by lunchtime. Other than that we’ve only had the odd light shower and it’s been warm. Sunny here at the moment. The forecast doesn’t look too bad for the week. I wouldn’t cancel your holiday if you’re heading this way!

NotQuiteUsual · 09/08/2021 11:23

@alltheemptyfields my mad ds asks to go to the beach on rainy days. The harder the better. Apparently being slapped round the face by heavy coastal rain in a blustery day is fucking amazing. I don't get it either, but there are some kids who would pick a rainy day over a sunny one.

ShitPoetryClub · 09/08/2021 11:27

I always try to book a cottage eith a large conservatory so we get some sumight even if it rains. Used to have a caravan with an awning when the kids were little and that was fine in wet weather too, as we felt we were outside.
I feel really sorry for those camping though, frightened the tent will blow away and no matter how good your kit is, everything feels damp under canvas.

Whatafustercluck · 09/08/2021 11:27

It's sunny in Dorset today and due to be fine all week....but we have had rain at night recently!

We've been camping in Dorset all week. It's rained most days, admittedly with some sunshine thrown in. Wind, too. And struggled to get above 19 degrees. And roads that are absolutely rammed.

NavigationCentral · 09/08/2021 11:29

Please don’t feel sorry for us. We had a marvellous sunny week in a Norfolk village last week where it absolutely poured the day before we arrived and the day we left. In between we spent entire days at the seaside and I’ve just had my best summer holiday yet and the kids loved it. We are going back again. It was perfect.

VickyEadieofThigh · 09/08/2021 11:30

I'm on the East Yorkshire coast (I live here) and it's glorious - I'm in shorts!

applepeachpie · 09/08/2021 11:32

YANBU. I've cancelled going anywhere. So depressing. Need a holiday so much but can pretty much forget it now the holidays are almost done and I'd have to book more annual leave. Raining again where I am today. Never ending.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 09/08/2021 11:33

*@SecretKeeper1 it's 18C and overcast here in N. Lincs.
Apart from a weeks heatwave before the kids broke up the weather has been awful generally. A little bit of sun here and there but no consistency. And not hot enough for the kids to use paddling pool or splash pad at the park which is usually a highlight of summer.

Interesting. I’m in Sheffield just above you. We’ve had lots of really hot weather. July at the end of term was really hot, then we had a really baking hot 2 or 3 weeks.

It’s sunny now as well

TempsPerdu · 09/08/2021 11:33

Surely if you plan a UK holiday you plan for bad weather?

Of course, that’s a given. As a family we’re pretty hot on the planning side of things, good at thinking of all eventualities and are rarely caught out by the weather when it comes to appropriate clothing etc… But it’s just not my idea of a fun, relaxing time having to think like that for the whole duration of the holiday. I want a change of mindset, and to switch off from those sort of practicalities for a bit.

Also it’s not just the fact of rain for me; it’s the greyness, drabness and lack of light that affects my mood. When the sun finally made an appearance on our recent Norfolk trip (last day, on our way home) the landscape instantly transformed and I felt infinitely happier. Sunshine just lifts everything.

DD is a very happy puddle jumper (big Peopa fan!) but what none of us can cope with is rain combined with wind, which is what we got in Norfolk. DD just burst into tears when we attempted a beach trip on one of our slightly-less-wet-but-still-drizzly-and-windswept days. And I can’t say I blame her!

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 09/08/2021 11:34

Just contemplating swapping jeans for shorts.

Chippingbird23 · 09/08/2021 11:34

@pineapplecat21

YABU. We are in the middle of a heat wave this week where I am.
Which country are you in?
applepeachpie · 09/08/2021 11:34

Oh and even though my dd is more than happy in the rain. I'm not. And my version of a happy family holiday is everyone is having fun at least a little bit!

Notthemessiah · 09/08/2021 11:36

Holidays are over-rated wherever you happen to be, but we had great weather in Norfolk last week for 6 out of 7 days.

Anyways, going by the recent climate report no-one should be flying abroad anyway, but I imagine that most people here will pretend they care about global warming whilst doing the whole three monkeys bit when it comes to their holidays (and yet still unironically berate those not having the vaccine for being 'selfish').

MrsFin · 09/08/2021 11:38

Yeah sure because I love getting wet and muddy with a 3 and 2 year old.

I detect a hint of sarcasm thereGrin, but there's nothing better than getting wet and muddy with a 3 and 2 year old - really.
Try it.

ShowOfHands · 09/08/2021 11:38

My brother is on holiday atm and having a brilliant time. Rain coats on and get on with it. They've played on the beach, fossil hunted, searched in rock pools, been out walking and cycling, played games, watched films, read books etc. That's all free. On top of that they've been to the cinema, pottery painting and used their National Trust membership lots. And it hasn't rained solidly. They've had some lovely warm days too.

We are off to London for a break soon and I've already got tickets for 5 museums (no cost) which will be bliss. They've all got stuff on for children and we will fit in some English Heritage and National Trust stuff too.

I think we have a real issue with people jetting off for holidays and creating a false dichotomy where leisure time MUST be sunny and rain means misery. I've just read a thread about the utter crisis point we are at with climate change and still holidays abroad are the gold standard, despite the real cost of them.

I love UK holidays. We really need to try and teach the next generation how to be a bit more creative and adaptable where the weather is concerned.

nonono1 · 09/08/2021 11:39

Most kids will be happy for a few hours playing on the beach in the rain.

Lol - as someone who endured many rainy seaside holidays as a child, this certainly wasn't the case for me.

nonono1 · 09/08/2021 11:40

London is an excellent place for a rainy holiday as there's just endless interesting stuff to do indoors. The museums are much quieter than usual too at the moment, due to the lack of foreign tourists. Enjoy!

Crunchymum · 09/08/2021 11:41

Surely if you plan a UK holiday you plan for bad weather?

If I was going away in March or October, I'd expect the weather to be shit.

August, I'd expect better weather.

We've dodged a bullet as we don't go away until the weekend though and the forecast is 21c and sunny spells for the whole week.

uktrippin · 09/08/2021 11:41

@alltheemptyfields

"I still take my holiday abroad over yours, I am in the UK all year round, we do all you did at the weekend anyway."

You seriously didn't 😂.

I much preferred many of the holidays I've had in different countries personally (I've travelled extensively but this year I've seen more of the uk than ever before for obvious reasons).

It's not your holiday vs my holiday. It's the patronising "oh I feel so sorry for all of the holiday makers" that's unnecessary and ridiculous.

"Did all that at the weekend" 🤣🤣

ShowOfHands · 09/08/2021 11:42

@NavigationCentral I'm so glad you had a lovely holiday here. Whereabouts were you? I've loved seeing tourists enjoying our county over the last few weeks, we've missed it over the pandemic. So glad you'll be back!
Mantlemoose · 09/08/2021 11:42

If the weather determines whether you enjoy your holiday or not you've got the wrong outlook in life. Of course we all want the sunshine but this year it's different. It's a chance not to be held hostage to the alarm clock, to explore different places even if you need to put wellies on and a hood up to do so. Being away from home means there's no reason to just disappear to your room, it forces you to be a family. We're just heading up north of Scotland for a week of rain. We're going with close friends to a small cottage and shock and horror we will all have to share the one bathroom! Can't wait to relax, not have 20 million kids chapping on the door. Life's what you make it!

TempsPerdu · 09/08/2021 11:43

I detect a hint of sarcasm theregrin, but there's nothing better than getting wet and muddy with a 3 and 2 year old - really. Try it.

To be fair, I think most of us with small children have been ‘trying it’ to death during the long months of lockdown, when there was precious little else to do except splash about in sodden parks. As a fully certified, Master’s level puddle jumper, I’d really rather be doing something else now for my summer holiday.

EmotionalSupportBear · 09/08/2021 11:44

i've always holidayed in the UK, i can only think of one holiday where we came home early because of shitty weather.

I do feel for the people camping, but cottage/caravan holidays are generally ok, you can usually find some stuff to do with the aid of waterproofs/wellies xD
