To feel so sorry for anyone on a British holiday right now

It’s been raining for about a week where I live. I’ve just woken up to yet more heavy rain this morning. It must be utterly miserable for anyone holidaying in the UK right now. You have my sympathies! Hope you’re managing to have a decent time despite the grim weather.

I actually looked this up, as I have quite a good memory and wanted to corroborate my impressions.

Hottest summer was 2003 (ingrained on my memory: pregnant !) but 2004 was bad. 2007 also v bad. July 2012 was terrible - schools sports day/summer fayreetc etc all cancelled and everyone saying Olympics would be a disaster.

Other years some good/some bad weather. I think it was 2018 that we had a hurricane on the Brecon canal - in August!

Interestingly officially the worst-ever run of bad summers was in the 1950s, finally broken in 1959. Obviously before my time, but dm said that they stopped bothering buying any summer clothes as every year it was wellies and jumpers on their annual farm stay.

Dongdingdong · 09/08/2021 10:45

Well that didn't last long - it's now clouding over again Hmm

nonono1 · 09/08/2021 10:48

We've got somewhere away for a week. Its not the most exciting place and its only an hour from us but I know we will really enjoy (a few pubs DH has been itching to go to for ages for example). We visited a friend and stayed with her for a few days and dropped in on another on the way back a couple of weeks back.

Personally driving somewhere an hour away wouldn't feel like a proper holiday to me. I need at least a couple of hours of journeying to feel I'm far enough away from home!

MarshaBradyo · 09/08/2021 10:48

Last year was good weather though - for lockdown then it carried on being really sunny and warm

80sMum · 09/08/2021 10:49

I agree with the pp who said that you need the right clothes for a UK holiday! If you're suitably attired for a rainy day, it's a whole lot more fun to be outdoors than cooped up somewhere indoors.

When we used to go camping in Scotland with the kids, we spent hours on the beach having fun, making dams, digging holes etc - in pouring rain. We just made sure we had top to toe waterproofs and wellies on!

Another of our holidays in a caravan at a farm in Devon, it rained every day but we still took our two year old to the beach and he loved it (as did we, since it was marvellously uncrowded!).

LaChatte · 09/08/2021 10:49

If it makes anyone feel better it's been raining on and off for the past week here in the south of France. As of tomorrow there's a heat wave forecast (and no, not everyone has air conditioning here). I think I'd rather be spending a week in a caravan in Dorset 😅

Every single year people say 'This summer has been worse than last year'

I don't believe this. I just think people forget what the weather was like last year or the year before

Yes, it’s not the fact of wet U.K. weather being miserable that puzzles me (in total agreement with that one); it’s the annual chorus of surprise about it. As I said upthread, more often than not we have lousy weather in August. When it’s not raining during the summer holidays it’s usually humid and muggy - you rarely get a period of blue skies and nice dry heat.

In the past, if we wanted a U.K. break we’d always book for June, September or totally out of season, so we have zero expectations about the weather anyway. As it happened, our June holiday this year also turned out to be a washout, but that hasn’t been the case in the past. As of next year we’ll be tied to school holidays with DD, so I really hope we can travel overseas again by then.

But crap August weather is not a new phenomenon; I vividly remember the summer of 2004, in my first job post-uni, staring out of the window of my London office at the constant stair rod-like rain. Or the 2012 London Olympics, which was amazing in all aspects apart from the utterly rubbish weather. August as the main ‘summer holiday’ season is really quite bad timing.

No had a holiday in two years due to work
I'd love a holiday and a break with my kids rain or not
Stop moaning and make a holiday fun regardless of weather

uktrippin · 09/08/2021 10:53

"We were supposed to be going to Scotland and the weather is wall to wall rain every single day. We've not gone"

Whereabouts in Scotland? We've just travelled around much of it and there was no wall to wall rain at all. Heavy showers on one day only.

It's sunny in the holiday town in England I live in this morning too.

Tinkerbellfluffyboots79 · 09/08/2021 10:53

Our week in the south of England at the end of July was half and half. Sadly the first half I spent in hospital, second half it rained. However I’m from the north of Scotland so the kids and I made the most of it, 11 year old loves the rain and they still played on the beach and went to feed the ducks and came in had a nice bubble bath to warm up and hot chocolate. We played games and just generally relaxed as I wasn’t up to much anyway. Long drive for all that mind you.

SpeakingFranglais · 09/08/2021 10:53

@PuppyMonkey

No such thing as bad weather just poor clothing choices as they say.
I agree with this.

My favourite place in the world is the lake district but getting good weather there is like hoping for rain in Dubai.

So we pack accordingly, we expect the worst and plan the holiday to match the expected weather. If we get a sunnt day, it's like winning the lottery!

We went to Cornwall this year, but packed for the Lakes. We had sun, we had rain, and a relentless downpour but it was all good and we had a great time.

TheLovelinessOfDemons · 09/08/2021 10:54

The DC went to a relative's last week for 4 days, it rained for 2 of them. They're going again in 2.5 weeks, hopefully the weather will be better then.

nonono1 · 09/08/2021 10:55

Also, it's definitely been miserable in London. A friend has been self isolating this past week due to Covid, and I've repeatedly thought to myself how she's not been missing much as the weather's been so wet!

It has rained a lot this past week here (London)

Set to improve this week though

Sewannoying · 09/08/2021 11:01

We do UK holidays every year and love it, regardless of the weather. And you have to take the forecast with a bit of salt. We’ve been on holiday for the past 5 days and the forecast was torrential rain and thunderstorms. None of that happened. We’ve had some rain interspersed with sunshine, but nothing a brolly and a raincoat couldn’t cope with. Today, and for the next few days it’s forecasting sun, but I can see a big rain cloud from my cottage window. But we are still going on our walk after brunch.

I really hope that foreign holidays open up properly soon, so those that whinge about UK holidays can go off and leave us to enjoy all the UK sights.

Goshitstricky · 09/08/2021 11:03

We're in Swansea for a week on Friday, I'm hoping for at least one day of sunshine 🤞🏻🤞🏻

Yea...but after a week even in appropriate clothing it gets a bit much. We've just done a week camping with appropriate wet weather gear. But on day 6 with yet another torrential rain storm and thunder and lightning, 2 small children and no where to go under shelter other than our (luckily large) tent, we thought fuck this and packed up early.
uktrippin · 09/08/2021 11:13

"I still feel sorry for holiday makers."

You feel sorry for me and my family who have had the most amazing time, seeing new places in the UK, visiting new attractions that we just loved, playing in the sea and sunbathing and eating fabulous local foods? Only got rained on twice, once heavily and even that turned out to be funny.

Well thank you for your concern but it's been fucking brilliant Grin

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 09/08/2021 11:15

We've just a cracking week in cornwall. 4 very sunny days, a couple with a mix of cloud and sun, just one where it was more overcast. It was fantastic.

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 09/08/2021 11:17

Surely if you plan a UK holiday you plan for bad weather?

There's lots of stuff that isn't too weather dependent that can be done, especially if you have decent waterproof clothing.

Most kids will be happy for a few hours playing on the beach in the rain. You just need to plan for getting warm and dry too.

Most areas have indoor attractions as well as outdoor stuff, not all cost money.

It just takes some planning.

I've had some horrendous weather on holiday as a child and an adult. Only once was it miserable and that was exacerbated by a very basic and remote campsite (before the days of online reviews), an ancient tent and car trouble. We all look back on the trip with fond memories now though! 30 years later I can still remember the joy of going into the supermarket loo and realising they had hot water!

YanTanTethera123 · 09/08/2021 11:17

We had a wonderful week in west Wales early June and have another booked for September. So long as I can get out and walk with the dog, treat myself to the odd pub lunch or takeaway and have a comfortable, clean accommodation then I’m happy.
I absolutely accept that for those camping or with young children then bad weather is utterly awful. And for those who can only afford to have a UK based week away then poor weather is depressing.

It’s different for those of you who are also getting a foreign holiday as well!

alltheemptyfields · 09/08/2021 11:19

uktrippin

I still take my holiday abroad over yours, I am in the UK all year round, we do all you did at the weekend anyway. Even if we all have wet suits if the weather happens to be colder that day. It's not a holiday when it's just a regular day out.

Your post was unnecessary, yes I feel sorry for people who have a shit time. Good for you if you don't? Confused

NotQuiteUsual · 09/08/2021 11:19

If you don't like grotty discos and iffy craft activities run by teenagers in sticky floored halls, you're fuck out of luck with this weather.

Personally though, I love the above Grin

alltheemptyfields · 09/08/2021 11:20

Surely if you plan a UK holiday you plan for bad weather?

again... yes you PLAN.
it doesn't mean it's fun or it wouldn't be better if it wasn't raining?
How hard is that to understand?

Most kids will be happy for a few hours playing on the beach in the rain.
do they? I don't know any who wouldn't prefer a sunny day.

MyMummyHasGotABigBottom · 09/08/2021 11:21

@xksismybestletter you could have given it a bash… forecasts here for the last 4/5 days would have had me quaking in my boots. But we have had v v little rain considering and have spent loads of time outdoors. Today is grim here, but the forecasts def aren’t always right.
