I’ll go first:

Losing a pet is not the same as losing a child.

Now your turn!

Circumcision is genital mutilation unless there is an urgent medical need for it.
That is not "seemingly uncontroversial" Hmm

brokenbiscuitsx · 10/08/2021 12:59

@QuentinBunbury you’d think so but it does seem like female genital mutilation = universally bad, male circumcision (aka male genital mutilation) falls 50/50.

whispers They seem the same to me, bodily mutilation with no consent.

phishy · 10/08/2021 14:25

”just pop it in the oven” invariably used after someone has asked for easy meals and a poster has described a recipe using 2,000 hard-to-find ingredients and a marinating period of 7 hours.

or just chuck it in the oven

Agreed, I see ‘chuck’ a lot on MN as chuck in the chicken, chuck in the cheese etc and it’s so annoying, saying chuck instead of put doesn’t make cooking any quicker,

QuentinBunbury · 10/08/2021 16:30

That's why it's controversial
Having a foreskin removed is in no way equivalent to having a clitoris removed
And calling circumcision "mutilation" minimises what is done to women. Ad you know if you follow those very controversial threads

Well yes exactly, it's like saying that having you nails cut too short is the equivalent to chopping your fingers or hand off.

The first is painful, and causes unnessary damage absolutely no doubt, however the long term affects are not comparable.

MirandaMarple · 10/08/2021 17:25

Curtains. They should ALL be floor length and if there's a radiator in the way move it.

ohthatbloodycat · 10/08/2021 23:19

I spoil my children on birthdays and at Christmas, and spend hundreds on each.

StepAwayFromGoogling · 10/08/2021 23:39

That you are a CF if you park in a parent and child space without a child.

MeanderingGently · 11/08/2021 00:03

I am always amazed at the heated debate over toilet brushes and washing up bowls on MN. And leaving the toilet lid open when flushing the toilet...the debates I've seen over the years....!

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 11/08/2021 00:30

If you prefer to hold your fork in the left hand and knife in the right hand, that's absolutely fine.

If you prefer to hold your knife in the left hand and fork in the right hand, that's absolutely fine.

Not according to one legendary thread, which had some appalling Hyacinths frothing and almost weeping about the decadence of a society that must be just about finished, if the above latter statement should ever be accepted or even tolerated.

I remember that thread! The things some people obsess over!
Wasn't there someone who claimed their husband made notes at business meetings about how contacts held their knife as well?

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 11/08/2021 17:34

LolaSmiles

Yes, there were people in charge of recruitment who were actually proud of the fact that they would instantly exclude any potential employee who held their cutlery in the 'wrong' hands. All of that potential talent they deliberately missed out on, rather than making hiring decisions based on things like merit, experience, attitude, like most good employers would.

There was also quite a bit of ableism (not to mention some cultural dismissiveness, if not full-blown racism), even when people clearly stated their disabilities, neural conditions etc. and were still told that they were wrong/uncivilised/making excuses and the like.

PluggingAway · 12/08/2021 01:40

Oh wow. In my mother's country, most people eat with their hands. They would know you are supposed to use a knife and fork in western countries, and therefore probably would do so in a professional setting, but I bet they wouldn't realise that you were supposed to hold them a particular way around.

This country also happens to churn out a huge number of computer science/software grads, who use this as an opportunity to get work in richer countries.

I wonder how many of those talented people have been passed over by dickheads who judged them for not using their knife and fork the "proper" way around.

MrsToothyBitch · 12/08/2021 11:04

That pop poem by Michael Rosen made me giggle! @Beachhuts90 yes- "bung it in" always makes me think of someone absolutely hating and resenting whatever they're cooking too.

Knife and fork holding is contentious. It would be surprise me if it still gets judged. My ex used to hold his cutlery v high up- which I was taught isn't nice- and my dad did take me to one side and tell me that as much as they really liked him, they were uncomfortable with him at the table and I should correct him before he got denied jobs because of it. Ex is a physicist- then a PhD student. My dad was really concerned that he'd do himself a disservice at a function or even an informal get together with people who mattered and would be penalised with job denials etc. I could see it came from a place of concern but I told dad that if he & mum had an issue with it, they could tell him. They didn't.

Until I came onto Mumsnet I never realised weddings were so controversial or that a couple are awful for daring to invite guests in exchange for food and drink and fun.

Bloodypunkrockers · 12/08/2021 11:19

Adults shouldn't use baby language

Should be straightforward but lots of posters love their baby words

I think the point is that the original statement did not mention clitorises!

Circumcision is genital mutilation unless there is an urgent medical need for it.

It should absolutely be non-controversial to describe cutting off the foreskin as mutilation.

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 12/08/2021 18:48

DH often puts the coffee container back in the fridge, but in the wrong place.
it drives me nuts. it has a dedicated place and it's not hard to put things back where you took them from, is it???
I have wanted to start a thread about this a few time because I think AINBU but I haven't dared.
Also I don't want to LTB

CoalCraft · 12/08/2021 21:55

Cycling is an unremarkable but perfectly respectable hobby that both men and women can enjoy.

LolaSmiles · 12/08/2021 22:16

CoalCraft
Off the back of that, cycling doesn't make someone a selfish arsehole. If a husband chooses to ignore his family and bugger off every weekend it's because he's a selfish arsehole.

Lots of cyclists enjoy their hobby and pull their weight at home. Don't blame a sport for having a lazy, entitled husband.

Agreed - you wouldn't say that violence in the form of punching a passer-by randomly in the face wasn't 'true' violence or is somehow acceptable, just on the basis that some violent people actually commit murder.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 12/08/2021 23:52

In case anybody is interested, this is the bizarre cutlery thread:

I LOVE LOVE LOVE a good MN wedding thread.

So many people offended about being invited to a wedding

Or my favourites: "You don't have to spend loads to have a good wedding! We had our wedding in a puddle in a field, the guests ate sausage rolls and worms and I wore a 50p nightie I bought from the Oxfam shop, and EVERYBODY said it's the best wedding they've ever been to".

Lies! I like big expensive weddings with fancy food and free bars, they're better than cheap ones and I'm not ashamed to admit it Grin

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 13/08/2021 00:30

the guests ate sausage rolls

And exactly WHAT is wrong with that, hmmmmmm?!?!?!?! Grin
