Dog in Hairdressers

glowyjuice · 05/08/2021 21:42

At the hairdressers I go to the owner's dog is always there, when I go normally it's asleep but on one or two occasions my hairdresser has had to step around the dog and get it to move as it was lying right next to us. I know I don't have to go there to get my hair done but apart from the dog I have no problems with the place and the service. For context the dog belongs to the owner of the salon who lives upstairs. Would you be happy with this?

billiebeeme · 06/08/2021 12:02

No as I'm allergic and it's quite unprofessional too.

pinkcircustop · 06/08/2021 12:05

No, I wouldn’t be happy with this but I wouldn’t have gone there in the first place.

It’s her salon and her animal so she can do what she wants, just like you or I can do what we want by voting with our feet and going elsewhere.

AngryWhompingWillow · 06/08/2021 12:07

@XelaM

So many dog-haters on Mumsnet- says a lot about those people Hmm

How well people treat animals is one of the signs of civilisation.

Congratulations, on the over-reaction of the week. Wink
Antsinyourpanta · 06/08/2021 12:08

I dont hate dogs, but I am sometimes slightly nervous of them in certain situations.
Small dog wandering about in the salon = no problem
Large or excitable dog growling or barking, and jumping up would make me feel nervous.
That doesnt make me a bad person and I wouldnt mistreat an animal (I have cats and they bloody rule the house!Grin)

SchrodingersMat · 06/08/2021 12:10

The beauty salon I go to has a lovely little dog who sits in my lap for the duration of my treatments. I really love it, she’s so sweet.

Killahangilion · 06/08/2021 12:12

Unprofessional and presumably a breach of health and safety guidelines?

I don’t like dogs or annoying children in a salon. Don’t mind children that are quiet and well behaved. I’d also never take my own dog into a shop.

There’s a salon locally with a gay middle aged owner and his little yappy dog. I went there once for a haircut as several people had recommended him, but the haircut was decidedly average (he point cut the shape!!!), so it was an easy decision not to return.

phoenixrosehere · 06/08/2021 12:19

YANBU.

If she is having to step over the dog while doing your hair or anyone else’s, that’s a problem. That’s an unnecessary hazard. She could have scissors, chemicals, hot tools in her hand and trip and hurt herself and/or someone else.

I would only put up with it if there is no one else I can go to but I would say something politely.

Dontwatchfootball · 06/08/2021 12:23

It would not bother me if it was well behaved, but having a fear like this is different from just not liking dogs. I am always happy to see dogs out and about, was bitten quite badly myself as a teen and have learned to overcome it. But if you cant cope with it, may be time to get your hair done somewhere else.

Sloth66 · 06/08/2021 12:46

I would find another hairdresser as I’m allergic.

Why are you highlighting the owner's sexuality? It is completely irrelevant.

SprinklesMcDoodles · 06/08/2021 12:57

If you are scared of the dog, mention it to the owner when you make your appointment. I love dogs but I would certainly send mine upstairs for an hour if someone was afraid of her.

EverybodyIsInteresting · 06/08/2021 12:59

I would love that.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 06/08/2021 13:03

you will get shot down by the dog loonsWell! Nope, no possible answer to that!

So many dog-haters on Mumsnet- says a lot about those people Or that one!

@glowyjuice you have a couple of choces: change hairdresser or get over your fear of dogs

The salon isn't wrong; you are not wrong.

You are just a bad match!

It's kinda relevant.

Yappy dogs tend to make more noise than others. It's not just about how they bark, but also how often.

Love dogs. Don't love yappy dogs.

PainterInPeril · 06/08/2021 13:09

@OhGiveUp That is hilarious!Grin

TheFoundations · 06/08/2021 13:15

@glowyjuice

I continue to go there as I'm trying to overcome my fear and have been going there for years and like my hairdresser and how she does my hair.
Tell her you don't want to be around the dog.

You clearly don't want to make the decision yourself to stop going there.

She'll decide for you. She might be happy to put the dog in the back room whilst you're there, or she might say that the dog is part of the salon and deserves its place.

You won't work the situation out by asking strangers on a forum, though.

Jaxhog · 06/08/2021 13:24

Nope. There are places for dogs - this isn't one of them.

That is so gross!
melj1213 · 06/08/2021 13:34

I don't understand why people need to bring their pets to work. I work in a supermarket behind the customer service desk, if I brought my cats to work I would be sent straight home.

I get that the owner might want them around but a lot of people don't- either because of allergies or phobias- so if you're working in a customer facing role then it should be the default that pets stay at home. At the very least they should be checking that customers are comfortable with the animals being near them and they should have a way to contain them away from customers if they aren't.

I don't mind animals but I am wary around ones I don't know. If I was in a salon where I can't just get up and leave if I start to feel uncomfortable and where I can't keep an eye on where any free roaming animal is well not without a half finished cut then I would be asking the stylist if they could secure the animal away from me.

5128gap · 06/08/2021 13:34

Mine is the same. Most customers seem to like the dog, as do I. I imagine if there were sufficient complaints that the business was being damaged she'd stop bringing her in. So I suppose you could mention you don't like it. But if yours is a minority view i doubt it would do any good.

EverybodyIsInteresting · 06/08/2021 13:44

If business owners choose to take their dogs to work, they will attract clients that like to be around dogs, or at the very least, don't mind it.

It's their business, their choice. And if the clients don't like it, they have free choice to go elsewhere.

MoiraRose4 · 06/08/2021 13:47

I’d be more likely to go back to this hairdressers. If you don’t like the dog, go elsewhere.

Fourandtwentymilliondoors · 06/08/2021 13:57

I actually take MY dog to my hairdressers! She’s a dog addict but can’t have one so she encourages any clients with well behaved dogs to bring them. So I do! No one has ever objected, but her clients know the “bring your dog” policy so I guess they wouldn’t.

Depechemodebiggestfan · 06/08/2021 13:58

I had a minor procedure done in hospital years ago and the person who performed it ( mole removal) had a large guide dog with her.
The dog was lying under me while she was cutting my skin!
I’m not sure whether she was deaf etc but I did find a bit strange- it did not seem hygienic at all- it was a theatre after all and yes I must add that particular site got infected straight away so I needed antibiotics.
I’m not saying it was from the dog being there but I had loads of moles done and this was the one it got badly infected.
