Dog in Hairdressers

glowyjuice · 05/08/2021 21:42

At the hairdressers I go to the owner's dog is always there, when I go normally it's asleep but on one or two occasions my hairdresser has had to step around the dog and get it to move as it was lying right next to us. I know I don't have to go there to get my hair done but apart from the dog I have no problems with the place and the service. For context the dog belongs to the owner of the salon who lives upstairs. Would you be happy with this?

My hairdresser always has her dog there. I really dislike it, and think it's pretty unprofessional. I don't dislike it enough to not go, but would rather it wasn't there all the same.

SirenSays · 05/08/2021 22:27

DHs barber got a little dog for company. He stays in his little playpen if customers don't want him on their lap or free roaming. She tells customers not to come back if they don't like the dog.

chocolateoranges33 · 05/08/2021 22:30

I wouldn't like it so I'd stop going. I'm not a dog lover & my husband is severely allergic to dog hair.

sleepwouldbenice · 05/08/2021 22:32

Quite a basic one
Their business so up them ifdog is There
Up to you if you go there

Couldn't think of anything worse than a dog in a hairdressers. I'd be looking for a new salon personally.

WelshWhisky · 05/08/2021 22:35

As long as the dog wasn’t demanding attention from me, drooling on me or incessantly barking it wouldn’t bother me.

FloralJammies · 05/08/2021 22:35

@glowyjuice

Yeah I know It's not a big deal but I've got a fear of dogs, I was bit by a family dog when I was very young not badly or anything but ever since then I get a bit tense around dogs, worried that I'm going to accidently step on it's tail and it's going to attack me but I know it's my responsibility to overcome this and not be fearful of them.
How do you feel around service dogs?

I can think of quite a few worse things myself. War, famine, plagues, murders, having an allergic reaction to the hair dye and losing half the skin off your face...
ikeepseeingit · 05/08/2021 22:39

Have you asked the owner if she can place the dog a little further away from you? A fear of dogs is totally understandable and I think most business owners would be okay with someone asking politely if the dog can be behind a gate/ put in their bed or asked to lie down further away. A dog used to people coming and going in a salon is probably one of the best socialised dogs you will find outside of guide dogs as well. I’m sure you’re not the only person who doesn’t like it.

JustMeAndWheatley · 05/08/2021 22:54

That would be a huge bonus for me! I hate going to the hairdressers but force myself to do so every 6 weeks. Love dogs.

skybluee · 05/08/2021 22:55

I wouldn't carry on going there as I wouldn't be comfortable/able to relax fully tbh.

frami · 05/08/2021 23:20

I hate hairdressers, haven't had a haircut since before the first lockdown and will avoid it for as long as possible. Maybe I should find one with a dog might help me get over my fear of hairdressers? Smile

One of the local nail bars has a resident cat. He's the reason I go to that particular salon.

It wouldn't bother me as long as it was a friendly dog
TheNestedIf · 05/08/2021 23:24

On the fence with this one. I am not a dog fan. However, my hairdresser often takes his dog to work and I don't mind because it is the quietest, sweetest little thing that mostly just sits on a chair out of the way. It also has the virtue of being quite small, so less likely to alarm anyone who has an actual fear of dogs. It enjoys a bit of fuss from any customer who is willing, but doesn't bother those who aren't. A less well-behaved dog, I'd be less keen on.

Elphame · 05/08/2021 23:44

No problem here.

In fact I took my own puppy in once as part of his socialisation. He had a lovely time playing with the owner's slightly older pup. One of the Saturday girls was put on pup supervision duties!

CounsellorTroi · 05/08/2021 23:44

Wouldn't bother me.

Elphame · 05/08/2021 23:45
  • pups were playing in the staff room - not around clients feet!
ItzANoFromMe · 05/08/2021 23:54

No. Totally unsanitary. I'd go elsewhere.

Saoirse82 · 06/08/2021 00:02

I adore dogs so I'd love it!

ColdTattyWaitingForSummer · 06/08/2021 00:06

My hairdresser has a home salon, and her dog is usually around. She’d always offer to put the dog in another room though if someone was anxious or nervous. I’d find it slightly stranger in a normal salon though. (Although to be fair I’d forgive my hairdresser most eccentricities, as she’s the only person ever who has given me hair that I’m happy with.)

honeybeesknees · 06/08/2021 00:18

No, my old hairdresser decided to bring her dog in all of a sudden. It used to run at my babies pram when we arrived, and the whole salon stank of dog food. I found myself a new hairdresser. It was definitely not a nice or relaxing experience for me.

Anyusernameleft · 06/08/2021 00:22

It wouldn't bother me, I always get a great welcome from my hairdresser's dog. If it bothered me, I'd find somewhere else.

PainterInPeril · 06/08/2021 01:02

As long as the dog isn't going to be cutting my hair......

Unfortunately, to get to my hairdresser, I have to travel on London public transport. By comparison, a well cared for dog doesn't even register on the health hazard scale. I just put my clothes in the washing machine and scrub hard when I get home (even my freshly done hair), and avoid putting my hands anywhere near my face in the meantime.

To be fair, this habit has come in handy over the last 18 months.
