Dog in Hairdressers

glowyjuice · 05/08/2021 21:42

At the hairdressers I go to the owner's dog is always there, when I go normally it's asleep but on one or two occasions my hairdresser has had to step around the dog and get it to move as it was lying right next to us. I know I don't have to go there to get my hair done but apart from the dog I have no problems with the place and the service. For context the dog belongs to the owner of the salon who lives upstairs. Would you be happy with this?

My old hairdresser sometimes had his two in the salon, but they were always snoozing behind the front desk. I only knew if they were there because I looked for them - very cute! Most people wouldn’t have had a clue they were there.

alexdgr8 · 06/08/2021 01:53

people round here wouldn't put up with that. nor in barbers either.
most people would go elsewhere.
i think it is just not appropriate.

LimeRedBanana · 06/08/2021 01:57

I wouldn’t be that keen on it, and we have a dog.

I’m sure your hairdresser wouldn’t mind keeping the dog away from you, if you mentioned it. Or, to put it another way - she’d be massively unreasonable to mind.

The people saying ‘just go to another hairdresser’ clearly have easy-care hair, and have no idea what it can be like to finally find a hairdresser that gives you a good cut that works for you and your hair. I’m 47 and still looking. Wink

alexdgr8 · 06/08/2021 01:59

people who have dogs or cats have animal hairs everywhere, and seem quite blind to that, or not to care, even in tea cups etc.
i don't like it, and am too old to pretend i dont mind. i avoid such places.
seems totally wrong in a hair salon, or any similar place.

Topseyt · 06/08/2021 02:02

Wouldn't bother me in the slightest.

Wolframhart · 06/08/2021 02:24

I would take my business elsewhere since I’m allergic.

GCAcademic · 06/08/2021 11:09

I’d rather a bit of animal hair on the floor than (as happened to me last time I went to the hairdressers), the stylist going to use a hairbrush which was packed with previous customer’s hair.

FionnulaTheCooler · 06/08/2021 11:15

I didn't go back to a previous hairdresser because of a dog. Not because of anything the dog itself had done but because the hairdresser spent so much time fussing and faffing with the dog, taking it outside for a pee, trying to settle it in its crate etc, that she was always running late. Being kept waiting for half an hour past my appointment time was the last straw and if I hadn't really needed my hair done for an event I was going to later that day I would have walked out, I found another hairdresser after that.

Where is round here?
OhGiveUp · 06/08/2021 11:38

My hairdresser had a gorgeous labradoodle type of dog in her salon which was always curled up in its basket in the corner.
After a few visits I remarked on how well behaved it was.
It turned out to be an extremely realistic looking stuffed toy. 😳

Skyla2005 · 06/08/2021 11:41

How is the dog being there affecting you ?

AngryWhompingWillow · 06/08/2021 11:42

@glowyjuice

Can't say I would be bothered, but YANBU to be annoyed about it as that is your right. It does seem a little bit off to have a dog in a hairdressing salon like that (IMO.) Why doesn't the owner of the salon (who is in the flat upstairs,) have the dog in the flat upstairs? Confused

As a few posters have said, it seems a bit unprofessional and somewhat unhygienic, to have a dog in the salon like that. Also, not everyone likes dogs, and some people are scared of them.

Could be worse though; I used to go to a hairdresser (early noughties,) who had her 3 kids running around (when it was the school holidays, weekends, and after 3pm every weekday.) 3 of them, 2 boys and a girl - 6 to 10 years old, and the worst behaved children EVER. Now I would take a dozen dogs in there over those 3 bloody brats!

XelaM · 06/08/2021 11:42

So many dog-haters on Mumsnet- says a lot about those people Hmm

How well people treat animals is one of the signs of civilisation.

XelaM · 06/08/2021 11:43

How it it unhygienic to have a dog in a hair salon when there are human hair on the floor everywhere! It's hardly a sterile operation theatre Confused

Where is the widespread hatred? Not wanting a dog in your hairdresser’s doesn’t mean you hate dogs - you do realise that?
Hoppinggreen · 06/08/2021 11:45

There are very very few places I can think of where I wouldn’t be happy to see a dog BUT I appreciate it’s not the same for everyone

Have you done an extensive survey on the subject in your local high street? I am intrigued how you would know this
Judystilldreamsofhorses · 06/08/2021 11:47

My hairdresser owns the salon and his dog is often in. I am a doggy person and love it, but I appreciate not everyone feels the same.

vivainsomnia · 06/08/2021 11:48

One of the most popular salon in my town has his dog there most of the time. It sleeps a lot but also will come to clients, albeit very gently. He does fat too at times!

It hasn't affected its popularity at all, on the opposite. It's hard to get an appointment there, they are very busy. He is quite a funny looking dog. It's never bothered me because I like dogs.

In real life, a very large group of people like dogs or don't mind them at all, it's all on MN. So ultimately, it's up to them and if they are happy it's not affecting their business negatively, that's that.

There are some dog haters on mumsnet, but this thread isn't one of them.
Not wanting a dog in the hairdressers isn't hatred, equally not wanting dogs in the hairdressers isn't a sign that people don't treat animals well, which seems to be the suggestion.

I'm a dog owner and entirely understand why people might not want a dog in the hairdressers.

Duetorain · 06/08/2021 11:51

I would want to know in advance. I wouldn’t want dog near me but might try the salon if it was the hairdresser’s dog. The dog would presumably be well behaved otherwise they would lose custom.

I wouldn’t be happy with a salon that allowed customers to bring a dog. It may not be used to the environment and wander owner will be distracted getting their hair done

DappledThings · 06/08/2021 11:52

I'd be delighted about it. YANBU to be uncomfortable yourself but you can only deal with that by finding another hairdresser or getting used to it. You would BU to expect the hairdresser to move their dog for your convenience when they are providing you with an optional service.

Antsinyourpanta · 06/08/2021 11:54

Our hairdressers dog was v cute and quite small. I didnt find it an issue. I'm not sure I've ever noticed customers dogs in hairdressers before. How would that work? Would there be a limit to how many you could have in the salon. One small dog (for me - not particularly a"dog" person) feels ok...I'm not sure I'd feel comfortable if there were say 3 large or boisterous dogs there. (Having said this presumably if you had a boisterous dog, you probably wouldn't take itto the salon.)

igelkott2021 · 06/08/2021 11:58

OP I wouldn't like it and I would find a different hairdresser if they wouldn't keep it out of the way when I was in there.

Having said this presumably if you had a boisterous dog, you probably wouldn't take into the salon ha ha you have an optimistic view of some owners!

Disliking dogs isn't the same as hating animals. Don't be so narrow-minded and learn some tolerance for other people. Dogs can and do bite and jump up at people.
