AIBU?

AIBU to feel disgusted walking past this with my children.

Live in a seaside town. The Rock point quarter is a new development regenerating my local high street. I live here with children as do many others. Why do they need to see this and what's the message?
I think it's disgusting, my daughter asked why his toothbrush was that colour. Little primary children don't need to see this coming out of their street every day. I'm just disgusted.

It’s a public space not an art gallery. It needs to work for everyone.

Don't be daft. There is no such thing as a piece of art that works for everyone.

@Intherightplace

I'm just posting here in the hope that someone will explain. I don't know what the poster is about or why it is offensive.

Me too! I am old though so very naive apparently Hmm

@Thewinterofdiscontent

So everyone would be happy if their nursery read the children a picture book with this character in? Or would we think a cigarette smoking mouse inappropriate?

It’s a public space not an art gallery. It needs to work for everyone.

The mouse is on a 'Wanted' poster - he's a villain. Even Disney villains are allowed to smoke - look at Cruella de Vil, for instance.

If it was a squeaky-clean Mickey being cute or heroic while puffing away, you might have a point.

I mean it's simple to explain to a child if they are confused by the image - you say "oh, the artist was making a joke because you know how Mickey is so good and nice, well, here the artist is showing what he'd be like if he wasn't."

Job done.

Moral lesson even.

@Janaih

That's quite sinister. If I had to walk past that with my 4 yo I would try to find an alternative route!

Seriously! Good grief. You can't shelter your kids all the time. Life isn't all fluffy bunnies and unicorns.

I applaud the message behind it and TBH, it’s made me like that annoying mouse for the first time.

Out of interest OP how would you feel about little ones seeing this every day?

Just this one I hated, s lot. What do you think of it?

I mean it was years ago and I still remember it!

@Cheerstoyou

It looks so awful and would’ve frightened me as a child! I was quite a sensitive soul and that looks awful! I wouldn’t be impressed walking my 3 yo DS past that.

Same, I remember the Michelin man used to scare me!!

I just don’t get the need to use a kids character. Report it to disney on Twitter, I’m sure they wouldn’t be that thrilled either.

“Controversial Art possibly in protest about the proposed demolition of the derelict Lacy's Bar - and the next door Master Mariner pub owned by JD Wetherspoon”

You’re being ridiculous.

I was expecting something sexually explicit, not a mediocre piece of pretty ordinary art. Some people’s offence threshold is alarmingly low.

Disney are very litigious. I would tweet their HQ or legal team with a pic.

I don't see how a children's tv character with a cigarette in its mouth isn't offensive to children

Read your film history. Mickley Mouse was originally a rogue and the intended audience was NOT children.

So back to the roots. Its not my cup of tea, but not disgusting. And I'd prefer my child to see that than the abusive drunken or drugged beggars on my high street.

@MayLeaveADentInYourSofa

It's a pretty ugly poster. I wouldn't like walking past that each day.

But I would have discussed it with my kid rather than post here.

I often think the same about parking threads so ..

Baffled. It's just (ugly) graffiti. Your child isn't going to be traumatised!

YANBU. Just had my small child asking me what a condom is, after reading a sign outside a (seaside) gift shop saying ‘Masks aren’t the law but neither are condoms and they still protect us’… no bloody common sense from some business owners 🤦‍♀️

It's not attractive but there is nothing offensive about it at all.

A bit ugly but not horrific, quite good graffiti. If I walked past with DD I wouldn't be scandalised or anything. I was expecting to see hate speech or crudely drawn genitals - not a rough Mickey Mouse

You’re really going to have to woman up. Mine asked what fuck meant when he was about four, having seen it as graffiti on a bus - he was a very early reader.

A condom is obviously a kind of balloon, just as fuck is a very rude word that polite people don’t say.
