AIBU to be surprised that Laurel Hubbard didn't register a lift in the Olympics?

I wonder if all the controversy around Laurel's participation led to her losing her nerve?

The only reason anyone is even suggesting the absurdity of categorising by lung size or oxygen intake (ffs) or anything else is to validate the idea of categorising a man as a woman.

Indeed. Don't lose sight of this, with all the derailing.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 03/08/2021 09:28

would like someone to explain in a logical and non-tautological way what the argument is for allowing men into women's categories. I haven't yet heard anyone put forward a logical, consistent argument.

Quite. There's a reason people focus on the details without ever making any case for why they should be in the female category.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 03/08/2021 09:36

Just want to give a round of applause for @TalkingtoLangClegintheDark for her posts last nightBrewThanks

Not sure if this has been posted yet. But as the tweet says, no words are necessary here!

Budge up you women!

So if she didn't register a single lift, or indeed win Gold, she threw the competition, but if she had won Gold she'd have been accused of cheating'. Good to see MN (as usual) provides a balanced view!

Kittii · 03/08/2021 10:13

@hyperbole001 would you like to provide the balanced view and explain in a non-tautological way why men who say they feel a woman should be allowed to compete in women's categories while retaining men's physical advantages? We're all ears.

I don't think she threw it. I think she wasn't good enough to be there. Which is bizarre as NZ seems to have a few good women weightlifters.

I agree.

Mockolate · 03/08/2021 10:30

I suspect it was planned all along

So if it's a win - "see, unfair, trans women are bigger and stronger!!"
Not a win - "they are bigger and stronger, did it on purpose!"
Hmm
Sounds like a complete conspiracy theory desperately trying to fit a narrative as the first one didn't work.
All this time as well, there's a woman who isn't trans who actually won and deserves recognition and congrats who is getting practically ignored in relation to all this going on instead.

FluffyBattleKitten · 03/08/2021 10:30

Hubbard was cheating. How Laurel performed was irrelevant. Should not have been there.
IOC sanctioned cheating.
Still cheating.

@hyperbole001 Ha, exactly, just seen this after posting my comment!
FluffyBattleKitten · 03/08/2021 10:33

Roviel Detenamo
Roviel Detenamo
Roviel Detenamo
A little louder for Mockolate who doesn't seem to get why a man in a woman's competition is unfair. Men and women being sex based reality isn't a conspiracy theory.

Amazingly posters can hold both of these views or one of these views.
Helleofabore · 03/08/2021 10:42

Mockolate

So you support Laurel Hubbard's inclusion in the female weightlifting category then?

Good to know.

RedDogsBeg · 03/08/2021 10:47

Hubbard was cheating and did so with the collusion of the IoC.

For any supposed elite athlete in weightlifting to not manage one single lift is beyond questionable.

Hubbard's inclusion ensured the exclusion of Roviel Detenamo, look at her and read about her background and tell me why a mediocre, 40+, white male from a privileged and wealthy background taking the place of Roviel Detenamo is progressive and inclusive.

The whole thing is a sham and a cheating sham at that.

Yes, it's almost as if her taking her part is problematic whatever the outcome. I don't think your statement demonstrates what you think it does.

Nothing was balanced as soon as Hubbard was in the competition. There was no way it was fair as soon as a male body was entered. A 43 year old, substandard male one that was suddenly world class once entered against young, peak fit female ones, beating all the NZ ones to its competition spot.

But you keep claiming it's the women being unfair...

Helleofabore · 03/08/2021 11:06

Who is ignoring the winners? Are you ignoring the winners?

In the meantime, the discussions need to be amplified that males who have the advantages of male puberty, should not be competing in female sport.

Or, do you believe hyperbole that Hubbard should have been competing in that event?

Do you believe hyperbole that males who identify as women should have a place competing in female sports?

Bryonyshcmyony · 03/08/2021 11:11

Who is ignoring the winners? Are you ignoring the winners?

I'm not, I started a thread about it.

I just can't get my head round how useless she was. I'm trying to think of a similar thing happening to anyone else at the Olympics.

Helleofabore · 03/08/2021 11:11

But you keep claiming it's the women being unfair...

But of course DrSbaitso both Mockolate and hyperbole and other posters have pointed out our views on males being included in female sports is worthy of scorn, derision and shame and are, indeed, the problem.

OhWhyNot · 03/08/2021 11:19

LH is a cheat

Being allowed to compete has allowed a cheat to take part when the placement should have gone to a women

It’s irrelevant how far LH got in the competition

Bryonyshcmyony · 03/08/2021 11:28

I think the truly disgusting thing here is that Olympic ethos has been spoilt by someone's pathetic vanity project. If Hubbard had at least tried I would have had more respect

DrSbaitso · 03/08/2021 11:30

Is there any issue, however obvious and utterly farcical that people won't try to resolve by telling women, in one way or another, to shut up, be nice and just accept missing out?
