Reported for not wearing a mask

By an Uber driver, I haven’t worn a mask since the 19th July, I was stupid to forget to take one in my Uber as I know they still require them.

The driver was friendly, he didn’t ask me to wear a mask at any point, then a few days later I got an email from Uber saying I had been reported by a driver for not wearing one.

I totally understand that i should have put one on as it’s their policy. However I don’t get why the driver didn’t just politely ask me in the task to wear one? Why be all laughing and joking and then report me.

OP posts:
waltzingparrot · 02/08/2021 09:49

OP - can you see now, why he reported rather than confronted?

HaveringWavering · 02/08/2021 09:50

@Lykkeli123

I can’t imagine many people would kick off for being politely asked to put a mask on? If they do then that’s awful really.
I think you have very little idea of the shit hat Uber drivers have to put up with on a daily basis.
MakemeaCake · 02/08/2021 09:53

Where I live- middle class town in SW England - most people in shops are still wearing masks. (staff and customers.)

Same in my hairdressers and dentists.

I'd say 80-90% of people I see in shops are wearing masks.

I still wear one. I hate it and feel quite claustrophobic, but I am aware that it's for the safety of other people even though I've been double jabbed ages ago.

noblegiraffe · 02/08/2021 09:53

You're miffed you got 'told off' for doing something wrong. You're trying to justify it with 'it's only human to forget things' or 'he should have asked me'.

Just own that you did something wrong and move on. It was your fault, not anyone else's.

Unicorn34 · 02/08/2021 09:54

We were in Tesco yesterday (wearing our masks) and someone commented very loudly "some people are STILL wearing masks!" There were a lot of people not wearing them, and that is their decision, but we will still be putting them on in busy public places for the foreseeable (our decision)

IcedSpice · 02/08/2021 09:55

@nothanksbarb

I wonder if perhaps rather than 'reporting' you he had an option to tick or whether or not you wore a mask on his system when he confirmed the ride had ended. He ticked no, because you didn't wear one, and so Uber sent you an automatic alert type thing?
I was thinking that, it's probably just a tick sheet feedback form about the passenger
HaveringWavering · 02/08/2021 09:55

@Spidey66

Who did he report you to?
To Uber. So they can remind her of their policy and blacklist her if she does it again.
MakemeaCake · 02/08/2021 09:57

@StrangeToSee Genuine question- how would wearing a mask for a few minutes make your asthma worse? I have listened to many consultants talking about this and they all say there is no reason not to wear a mask if the person has asthma unless they are in the middle of an attack.

No one enjoys wearing a mask. I have am slightly claustrophobic and I hate wearing it but no way would I say I was exempt just because I find it very stressful.

Doublestar · 02/08/2021 09:58

What's taking ops money got to do with anything?

Er....he took the fair didn't he? He could've said "I don't like to take passengers who don't wear a mask?" Or "it's against company policy"

  • I think to report her after happily taking the job is disingenuous and sneaky. Not that the "reporting" would bother me any way - who cares? But there's no denying it's weird to sit laughing and joking with a passenger and mention nothing about the lack of mask and then report them. What a wimp.
Spidey66 · 02/08/2021 09:58

@HaveringWavering
Of course Blush

I was imagining some government department dealing with reports of non mask wearing.
As you were.

BiBabbles · 02/08/2021 09:59

I can see it feeling awkward to basically be told off via text to someone who was nice to your face, but really, that's the driver's job and it's not that bad, it's not like you're preventing from further use from one slip up. I've forgotten a few times and been glad of the reminders from signs and seeing others and being asked.

I can’t imagine many people would kick off for being politely asked to put a mask on? If they do then that’s awful really.

My spouse works in a hotel and back when guests were restricted and they had to remind people to wear masks, the staff repeatedly got all sorts of horrible remarks, had people spit on the plastic barrier, someone licked the barrier, and at one point, a man whipped out his dick and pissed on the barrier and around the reception area.

The hotel has since 19th of July removed everything else COVID related, except those plastic barriers and the hand sanitizers, because some assholes are nasty and the evidence of abuse was enough to convince head office that that additional protection for staff needed to stay (they were originally planning to remove those too, and with staff now out with COVID, they may be regretting what they did remove...).

Looubylou · 02/08/2021 10:00

He is following policy. He might not even personally care.

Cherrysoup · 02/08/2021 10:02

You might have been extremely confrontational so I don’t blame him. How can he know what your reaction would be?

ApplesinmyPocket · 02/08/2021 10:05

"The virtue signallers in their grubby fabric face masks can do one."

He probably thought if he said anything he'd be told to 'do one' Hmm and a tirade about 'face nappies', 'muzzles', or the usual childish venom anti-maskers come up with.

Amaterasux · 02/08/2021 10:05

Wearing Masks does not making asthma worse - nor do they trigger asthma attacks unless washed in something the person who is wearing them is allergic too.

Can we see a snapshot of that consultant letter that claims it does and means you are exempt please? You can remove all your identifying details.

SprayedWithDettol · 02/08/2021 10:10

If you were genuinely sorry about ‘forgetting’ I’m not sure you would start a thread to debate this. 🤔

I agree 100%.

The last time I was waiting at a station (enclosed, not outside platform) when masks were compulsory, there were groups of people not wearing masks, mainly young girls and men. There was no way they were all exempt, by the law of averages- but they were choosing not to comply.

So I can fully understand station staff taking a dim view of someone saying they are exempt when so many aren't and are just taking the piss.

VolcanicEruption · 02/08/2021 10:15

I have never used Uber but why do they need your email address?

pinkcircustop · 02/08/2021 10:16

@VolcanicEruption

You have to sign up for an account with their app to be able to use them.

You can’t just call an Uber off the street, it doesn’t work like that 😂

I would have commented back very loudly had I of heard that.

Mask wearing is about protecting others not just oneself.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 02/08/2021 10:17

I don't have asthma but masks make me cough. It's nothing to do with washing powder either as the disposable ones (which should be banned for general use) make it a lot worse

Amaterasux · 02/08/2021 10:17

@MakemeaCake

I agree 100%. Weirdly enough so does every single respiratory consultant I have seen over the last 18 months, as well as the big asthma organisation here and abroad. It seems to be only the OPs consultant that thinks it's an issue. It's shit like "my consultant says.." that then gets taken and used by others so will be interesting to see the mask exemption letter (I by the way am assuming the poster is in the UK where such letters were very rarely written!)...

Amaterasux · 02/08/2021 10:18

@PinkSparklyPussyCat they really don't make you cough. What type are you using?

Intherightplace · 02/08/2021 10:25

By not wearing one you'd already demonstrated that you didn't care much about him and if he'd asked you to, as you'd forgotten it, what were you going to do?

I think he did the right thing. "Confronting" you about it would have led to a different kind of post and you'd still have been convinced it was him who was unreasonable.

Hekatestorch · 02/08/2021 10:26

Er....he isnt obligated to refuse her journey.

He can choose to take the job and still tick the box that's says she had no mask on. How he chooses to deal with it, besides which he may not have ohysically reported her. Only filled in the passenger check list.

He has a choice to fill it in how he wants.
