Reported for not wearing a mask

Lykkeli123 · 02/08/2021 08:40

By an Uber driver, I haven’t worn a mask since the 19th July, I was stupid to forget to take one in my Uber as I know they still require them.

The driver was friendly, he didn’t ask me to wear a mask at any point, then a few days later I got an email from Uber saying I had been reported by a driver for not wearing one.

I totally understand that i should have put one on as it’s their policy. However I don’t get why the driver didn’t just politely ask me in the task to wear one? Why be all laughing and joking and then report me.

People who are exempt are the worst for being rude about wearing masks. They seem to think you have an innate ability to 'know' they don't need one and can become inexplicably abusive. I've seen this in 'naice' women and scumbags alike. So yes, you ABVU. Pay the fine.

clickychicky · 02/08/2021 08:50

@CliftonGreenYork

I work in John Lewis (the home of middle class england) and one of my staff was spat at by a middle aged woman for simply asking her to wear a mask. You have no idea how horrible some people can be.
That's disgusting and should be a crime.
LadyPenelope68 · 02/08/2021 08:50

@Iggly
I know this sounds terrible, but those who don’t wear masks tend to be more opinionated about their “right” not to wear one.
I would imagine this is the exact reason why. I’m sure they’ve had loads of hassle and abuse for asking people to wear one.

Faultymain5 · 02/08/2021 08:50

@MaliceOrgan

their confirmation text reminds you to wear a mask so I don't see how you could 'forget'.
Who reads the content of the confirmation text?
IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 02/08/2021 08:50

You didn’t have a mask so even if he was brave enough to risk a confrontation it wouldn’t have solved anything.
He was correct to report the way he did, he could have refused to do the journey.

NoNotYou · 02/08/2021 08:51

@clickychicky
It is a crime.

DismantledKing · 02/08/2021 08:51

@Lykkeli123

I can’t imagine many people would kick off for being politely asked to put a mask on? If they do then that’s awful really.
You’re kidding right? Have you not seen all those headbangers at the anti-lockdown demos?
Lykkeli123 · 02/08/2021 08:51

Masks are no longer mandatory in most places, people who choose not to wear them are not necessarily people who don’t care about protecting others. We all forget stuff sometimes, it’s part of being human.

Of course they do Confused He wasn’t to know you weren’t one of them.
Lykkeli123 · 02/08/2021 08:52

If he had refused to drive me I would have understood.
Not sure where I mentioned a fine?

@NoNotYou
Good

KaptainKaveman · 02/08/2021 08:53

OP your second post says that you've "had it before where people rush to report you". This suggests you're making a habit of 'forgetting' your mask doesn't it? How many times have you done this?

SoupDragon · 02/08/2021 08:54

@Lykkeli123

But they are mandatory in an Uber. Whether they are elsewhere or not is irrelevant.

Just move on.

Faultymain5 · 02/08/2021 08:54

@BeyondMyWits

You chose not to protect him, would think of that being aggressive enough.

They require one, you didn't wear one. He followed procedure (report, do not confront), you did not.

But to then laugh and joke with the passenger is a little slimy if you are going to report them. He didn’t know if she was an exempt passenger any more than he knew if she would be an aggressive one.

Everyone has lost sight of themselves during this pandemic.

Shapesorted · 02/08/2021 08:54

You said you didn't have one so what would have been the point of him asking you to put one on? He's reported you so any other driver who doesn't want to carry an unmasked passenger will avoid your account next time.

They are in public transport in many cities. Uber drivers have the same need for protection.
Keys, phone, mask. Not that hard.

Polkadots2021 · 02/08/2021 08:55

@Lykkeli123

It’s not their mask policy that is the issue, but I’ve had it before where instead of simply asking you, they rush to report you.
It also helps generic safety for Uber drivers. They can report to mgmt that X percent of passengers didn't have a mask as that can influence policy. No-ones having a go at you. It's a good thing that.also the company offers follow ups to just remind people. They're looking after their employees.

Of course they do. My daughter works in retail in a shop that requests customers still wear masks. There have been a few unpleasant customers arguing the toss about it and creating a scene. Makes for an unpleasant working environment.

The staff all wear masks and I think it's quite rude to insist on your right not to wear one when staff are having to and a polite request has been made.

NumberTheory · 02/08/2021 08:57

It’s not just an altercation he will have wanted to avoid. He won’t want to have annoyed someone into giving him a poor review. Even if someone is nice to his face when called out he risks them giving him one star when they rate him.

Apeirogon · 02/08/2021 08:58

Yes it's human to forget your mask sometimes OP. He was being human too, in feeling cross with your behaviour and wanting to do something about it.

But your original post reads that you haven’t been wearing one since the 19th
MontysMinions · 02/08/2021 08:58

I'm not sure what difference it would have made? You say you forgot your mask so didn't have it on this occasion?

So if he'd have politely asked you, you would have apologised and said you'd forgotten it...he still would have reported you as regardless of reason you broke their policy.

So you'd be in exactly the same position you are now?

Whatwouldscullydo · 02/08/2021 09:02

This has been the problem all along. The powers that he get to look like they are doing something whilst handing the responsibility to staff of course with absolutely zero in the way of back up. Most the time people just kick off, wear it around their chin, lie about being exempt ( u have to take their word for it and its not my business to probe any deeper ) or you spend longer arguing than they'd have been in the shop if you'd have just served them. So you just serve them cos its not worth the hassle. Then you get the " oh id never let them do that , just don't serve them." Idiots. Yeah mate unless u r gonna be my security guard stop talking bollocks mate.

Honest to god, be grateful you don't know how awful people can be. My friend is a taxi driver and the abuse he gets is disgusting. Well dressed, nicely dressed women telling him he's a complete cunt, when all he has said is 'yes, he can pick them up, but will be 10 minutes as he's at the train station' rather than sitting in that particular pub carpark on the off chance someone will want a taxi.

The abuse he gets off people when he's fully booked or gives them a (metered) price to go 30 miles and it's more than a fiver.

It's been a nightmare trying to stay safe from covid, he's done everything he can and he's more at risk than customers... but people still kick off when asked to sit in the back of wear a mask.

The 'public' can be nasty bastards. He probably didn't want to take the risk
of you kicking off.

You know you need to wear a mask, just do it.

LizzieSiddal · 02/08/2021 09:04

You didn’t wear a mask.

You were reported

You’ll remember next time so mission for the Uber driver accomplished.
