Reported for not wearing a mask

Lykkeli123 · 02/08/2021 08:40

By an Uber driver, I haven’t worn a mask since the 19th July, I was stupid to forget to take one in my Uber as I know they still require them.

The driver was friendly, he didn’t ask me to wear a mask at any point, then a few days later I got an email from Uber saying I had been reported by a driver for not wearing one.

I totally understand that i should have put one on as it’s their policy. However I don’t get why the driver didn’t just politely ask me in the task to wear one? Why be all laughing and joking and then report me.

@Iggly

Maybe he didn’t want to have an argument.

I know this sounds terrible, but those who don’t wear masks tend to be more opinionated about their “right” not to wear one.

In my experience people who think mask wearing should be continued are the loudest. Most people I know who no longer wear one just get on with it.

I can’t imagine many people would kick off for being politely asked to put a mask on? If they do then that’s awful really.
Really?

I work in a hospital. They certainly do.

I understand why someone would be worried about raising it face to face. Nobody needs a mouthful of abuse at work.

MyriadeOfThings · 02/08/2021 09:20

@Lykkeli123

Masks are no longer mandatory in most places, people who choose not to wear them are not necessarily people who don’t care about protecting others. We all forget stuff sometimes, it’s part of being human.
And drivers need an income to feed their family so they will still take people on even though they might well put their health at risk.

They are simply trying to stay afloat. It’s part of being human….

In my experience the anti-maskers are the loudest and most obnoxious.

there are enough threads with irate and offended posters just on this forum to show you how quickly people do kick off!

Because he can't risk his feedback rating.

Waah. Waah. I contravened a company's policy and now I'm stamping my little foot. Waah waah.

muddledmidget · 02/08/2021 09:25

As a retail employee I'd love it if I could simply text a report to a customer who failed to observe my employers request to still wear a face covering, rather than the verbal abuse and even physical abuse we've all experienced over the last year. It's no longer law, so we're not enforcing it, but I have a lot more time for good customer service for those who wear a mask (I know some are exempt and don't need to do anything to prove it, but some are also just tossers)

HalzTangz · 02/08/2021 09:27

Because it's not his job to remind you of the rule you already knew was in place

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 02/08/2021 09:27

@MaliceOrgan

their confirmation text reminds you to wear a mask so I don't see how you could 'forget'.
Not Uber but I've forgotten to take a mask with me on loads of occasions. I've usually got one kicking around in the bottom of my bad but if I don't take a bag then it's easy to forget
Limeinthacoconut · 02/08/2021 09:28

Well I have got into two ubers where the drivers had no mask on and I had to ask them to put them on! One was double vaccinated and thought he couldn’t spread covid, the other tutted when I asked him to put one on. I didn’t report though as they did put on when asked. I was a bit surprised though given the fact it tells me on the app I must do it.
I think he should have mentioned to you and I think a lot of ubers also have spare masks but yeah, may be he wasn’t a confrontational person and was a bit worried in case he got a lecture about not having to wear masks.

I've seen loads kick off as have my colleagues in retail, some have even been threatened with violence
SofiaMichelle · 02/08/2021 09:28

@MissTrip82 that's terrible!

People kicking off about wearing masks in hospitals should be considered to have relinquished their rights to any care.

You don't need abuse as another issue to contend with.

Spidey66 · 02/08/2021 09:29

Who did he report you to?

Hekatestorch · 02/08/2021 09:31

I feel this is very disingenuous

Op should have worn a mask. How he decided to deal with that situation is entirely his own choice.

People have kicked off about being asked to wear a mask. Taxi drivers already get loads of crap. He probably didn't want more.

He dealt with it how he saw fit. That's his choice.

Many people do

Oh my, they really do. My lovely mum manages a retail shop and had so much verbal abuse hurled her way it shocked me at first. The thing was, with all the exemptions it was hardly like it could be enforced easily by small independent shops, so she always phrased it as “do you have a mask with you?” rather than telling someone to put it on. The replies she used to get were unreal!

It was often the most unassuming people who were the rudest.

Totally understand that you weren’t confrontational about it or anything but there would have been plenty who were and I’m sure the driver just didn’t want to face that situation again. I wouldn’t take it personally but perhaps next time, should the situation arise again, just apologise first as you get in the taxi.

Doublestar · 02/08/2021 09:38

So he still took your money then - Wasn't that worried was he?

Maria1982 · 02/08/2021 09:45

Unfortunately many people do kick off and become unpleasant when challenged about mask wearing.
To be honest, it would only take 1 incident of a passenger getting unpleasant with him for the driver to decide it’s easier to say nothing and report later.

🤷‍♀️ I agree with you that the world would be a better place if we could all just talk about things reasonably buy apparently that’s not where we re at.

What's taking ops money got to do with anything?
Rosebel · 02/08/2021 09:47

He didn't know you wouldn't kick off. Loads of people do.
You know you wouldn't have got aggressive but he didn't know that. From his point of view it was easier to report you than to risk you kicking off.

You have genuinely not seen any of this? We've had parents spit on school staff for asking them to wear a mask in the building, ad ht eglass in a door smashed in reception.

I do not blame him in the slightest for not approaching it with you.

nothanksbarb · 02/08/2021 09:48

I wonder if perhaps rather than 'reporting' you he had an option to tick or whether or not you wore a mask on his system when he confirmed the ride had ended. He ticked no, because you didn't wear one, and so Uber sent you an automatic alert type thing?

Amaterasux · 02/08/2021 09:48

Uber drivers have to report people who are not wearing masks - it's a condition of them driving as their mask wearing guidelines are now enforced as part of the HSE Legislation - the risk assessment is based on mask wearing.

If he hadn't reported it and anything had happened, he could, along with all of his seniority line end up fined, or prison (depending on how bad and what kind of breech it was).

StrangeToSee · 02/08/2021 09:49

Personally, I do judge people on public transport for not wearing masks, even mindful that some of them will have justified reasons for not doing so. You can almost pick out the ones who are doing it just to be subversive

How do you pick them out? Unless you mean they wore it to get on then took it off to talk/eat?

I get really annoyed with people who make passive aggressive remarks about me not wearing a mask. I had covid from work, then long covid which caused a severe asthma flare up. Masks make it worse. I have an exemption letter from my consultant but I’m not getting it out for people to sneer at.

Once a member of staff sweeping the platform said ‘no mask?’ without looking at me. I replied I’m exempt. She replied ‘that’s what they all say’ still without looking at me. So I laughed and carried on reading my book. Had she asked to see the cert I would have produced it but she didn’t, she was just rude and assumed I was lying.
