Reported for not wearing a mask

By an Uber driver, I haven’t worn a mask since the 19th July, I was stupid to forget to take one in my Uber as I know they still require them.

The driver was friendly, he didn’t ask me to wear a mask at any point, then a few days later I got an email from Uber saying I had been reported by a driver for not wearing one.

I totally understand that i should have put one on as it’s their policy. However I don’t get why the driver didn’t just politely ask me in the task to wear one? Why be all laughing and joking and then report me.

Trust me. I heard them talking. Typical middle aged mouthy birds on a summer afternoon mission to get shitfaced on Prosecco. They were stocking up, maskless, in Sainsbury's.

You get a specific notification when you book to the Uber where you have to agree to wear a mask for your journey, which OP clearly did.

OP your second post says that you've "had it before where people rush to report you". This suggests you're making a habit of 'forgetting' your mask doesn't it? How many times have you done this?

I think it’s fair. The driver didn’t want a confrontation and has just warned other Uber drivers. I imagine some drivers won’t accept your fare now knowing you don’t wear a mask. That’s fine, it’s Ubers rules and you must know this (yet constantly ignore) if you are complaining people are being quick to report you 🤷🏻‍♀️

YABU, he was in the more vulnerable position (possible complaint from you on bad service if he asked you to wear a mask), so fair play to him.

Erm she usually carries one for journeys? Many people still carry them for when they are necessary without wearing them when they are not. E.g If I take my kids to the park it’s not necessary, but we might pop into a shop so I’ll have a mask handy.

We’ve gone from “I was stupid to forget to take one in my Uber as I know they still require them”, to “you don’t wear a mask”.

Interesting how we can infer somethings from what the OP says but not others. She hasn’t said she was reported by Uber drivers more than once and she didn’t say she was reported for Covid non-compliance. Just that people are quick to report.

I cannot tell from this post if she is an abusive non-mask wearing, Covid spreading, anarchist. Will she have to take it on the chin? Yes and from her OP has done. Is she wrong to ask why the behaviour of the driver was so opposite to someone with an issue. No of course not.

And some people have given great reasons why the driver encouraging spread was perfectly acceptable behaviour just before the report.

I can’t imagine many people would kick off for being politely asked to put a mask on? If they do then that’s awful really.

The ones that don't wear masks are the ones that are the worst for asserting their rights. He was avoiding a confrontation.

They are not easy issues. If staff refuse to work unless all customers in a shop are in masks where does the shop owner draw their own line? The law does not require people to wear masks in shops (in our Waitrose it is voluntary and I don't wear one for example). Those wearing masks are 1. disabled 2. exempt under the old law for another reason eg experience severe distress in a mask but may never have been a doctor or 3. asserting their legal right to be free (or just forgot to bring it but normally wear it). People might dislike everyone in 1 - 3 or just some of those categories. I wear it in the shop when with my son as he will not go into the shop unless I put it on so about 1 trip in 7 in the same shop I have it on.

In many of our local restaurants and shops masks are still required unless medically except. It’s up to individual businesses to set their requirements.
I was in Waitrose and Tesco’s yesterday and it was reassuring to see the majority still wearing their masks.

Where I've been out and about most people have still been wearing their masks, so much so that I notice the ones who aren't following the rules (whether by exemption or sheer bloody-mindedness!).

When you are booking an Uber it asks you to confirm you are wearing a mask before finding you a driver, so YABVU to confirm that you are wearing one and then not do so.

Government advice is still to wear masks in indoor spaces where you meet strangers and on public transport (including taxis). Why wouldn't you just wear it uness exempt?
