Reported for not wearing a mask

By an Uber driver, I haven’t worn a mask since the 19th July, I was stupid to forget to take one in my Uber as I know they still require them.

The driver was friendly, he didn’t ask me to wear a mask at any point, then a few days later I got an email from Uber saying I had been reported by a driver for not wearing one.

I totally understand that i should have put one on as it’s their policy. However I don’t get why the driver didn’t just politely ask me in the task to wear one? Why be all laughing and joking and then report me.

By report do you mean it is only your Uber profile. I assume this is to warn other Uber drivers that you didn't so they can choose whether or not to accept any future ride requests.

I an afraid you must have been living under a rock if you aren't aware how rude and nasty some people get if you ask them to mask up.

He was nice and laughing and jokey because his rating and livelihood depend on it. Procedure is do not confront, report.

That is annoying for you OP. You sound like you would have been reasonable.

However, have you seen the awful video from America from the Lyft/Uber driver who politely asked passenger to put his mask over his nose and ended up getting a racist tirade instead?

Uber sent an email a few weeks back saying we are keeping our mask policy despite change in restrictions. It's probably a good idea to just a keep a mask on you, even if you don't intend to wear it, for purposes like this.

It is annoying to be reported without it being mentioned at the time though, but I can understand it from the drivers perspective too.

If you are exempt can you use Uber?

@Lykkeli123

I can’t imagine many people would kick off for being politely asked to put a mask on? If they do then that’s awful really.

You visibly haven’t met one of those people who think that masks are the devil incarnate.
I know a few of those, many of have always refused to wear a mask and they would be a right pain in the arse.

If you have been the third person that day who has not been wearing a mask, I can see why he decided to just report rather than tell you he couldn’t take you.
Plus he might have REALLY needed the money. You never know.

I forgot to put a mask on when getting into an uber the other day. I was stressed and running late for work because my car wouldn't start. I understand that mistakes can happen.

5 mins into the journey I realised, put my mask on and apologised. The driver then told me he had a lot of passengers who didn't wear masks at all and he didn't feel very safe. I wouldn't have blamed him if he had reported me tbh.

Like other people have said, he doesn't want a fight or 1* reviews which could lose him his job. Reporting you was the safest option.

Why should the OP use an exempt card when she isn’t actually exempt from wearing a mask? Confused

That’s even worse imo.

Forgetting things is a normal part of life!

As you can see from forums like this one, people are more comfortable complaining online rather than in person - he was probably worried you’d kick off even though you know you wouldn’t.

I wouldn’t worry about it any further.

Well, I walked past a "protest" of anti-maskers with a mask on and was screamed at to take it off, they've brainwashed you etc. If I were him I wouldn't take the chance of a confrontation, especially when his livelihood likely depends on working as an uber driver. Next time, just wear one or explain.

In exempt and no taxi driver has ever asked me to wear a mask or see my exemption papers from the doctor. In fact many drivers don’t wear them or take theirs off when they see the passenger isn’t wearing one. If you’re in the back left and the windows are open I think the risk of transmission is low for a short journey. I haven’t used Uber though just taxis.

@Rabblesthecat

If you are exempt can you use Uber?

Yes, Uber allow exempt passengers and drivers.

The drivers have to tell Uber if they're exempt - I'm not sure if Uber then put any other measures in place or not.

If he had refused to drive me I would have understood.
Not sure where I mentioned a fine?

So when the car arrived anf you saw him wearing his mask and realised you'd forgotten yours why didn't you say something to him? Ask if he would be comfortable or would he prefer to wait while you got one, before you got in the car?

People are on power trips with masks.

The only people who are wearing masks effectively are those who are in professional settings, mainly healthcare. They are nothing more than a placebo to appease the anxious.

The virtue signallers in their grubby fabric face masks can do one.

@NumberTheory

It’s not just an altercation he will have wanted to avoid. He won’t want to have annoyed someone into giving him a poor review. Even if someone is nice to his face when called out he risks them giving him one star when they rate him.

And what sort of rating does he think he’ll get now?

He was correct to report the way he did, he could have refused to do the journey.

Only the second part of this sentence is accurate. He should have simply refused the journey if he wanted to ensure he was following policy.

What would you have done/said if he refused to drive you?

I asked two delivery drivers to put on a mask and there was plenty of huffing and puffing. I only did it because I knew the company would send a feedback email and I didn’t want to lie.

The Uber driver is probably more at risk than you. It’s not that hard to keep masks in your bag.

Eh? Where did @Rabblesthecat suggest doing that? She just asked a question about the policy! You’ve made up the rest.

I'm surprised you didn't mention it to the driver 'oh I'm really sorry but I've forgotten my mask' OP. That would have been the polite and right way to approach it and would have rightly given him the 'opt out' he would have been entitled to?

Personally, I do judge people on public transport for not wearing masks, even mindful that some of them will have justified reasons for not doing so. You can almost pick out the ones who are doing it just to be subversive (of whom there seem to be quite a few!).

He should have said something or refused to take you unless you wore one.

I went out in town for the first time in ages yesterday and it was clear where people felt the need to wear them and where they didn’t, also notice quite a divide in the kind of shops we went into. M&S everyone was wearing masks, primark no one was wearing a mask 🤔. We went into Burger King and everyone in the queue were masked but I couldn’t find mine (left it in the hair dressers) and I felt like the odd one out yet other places I felt like the odd one out for wearing one. It’s all confusing, I don’t want to make anyone feel uncomfortable by me not wearing one but I’m also happy not to wear one.

You agree to wear a mask before you even book an Uber. I find it hard to believe it would "slip your mind" in the few minutes it takes the cab to arrive.

If I were the driver, I probably wouldn't mention it. You had already agreed to wear the mask and then didn't. I wouldn't expect someone who did that to be nice about it.

Sorry you’re right. I misread that post completely and read that the OP should have used an exempt card instead!!

@Rabblesthecat, yes I would say that using Uber with an exempt card and no mask is OK as it has always been!

Sorry for the confusion there!
