To lock the jackass in (parking thread)

I live in a rural location which is very popular with walkers / bikers / horse riders etc. It's heaving today for some unknown reason as the weather is rubbish!

We have 2 driveways. One which was with the original cottage then a small bit of garden then a second which leads to the additional land we have. The second driveway the forestry commission have a ROW over as the track continues up into the forest. Next to that driveway is a footpath. Both driveways have gates at either end and both say private property/dogs running loose. (Diagram attached - not to scale!)

I have just had a straw delivery and so opened the second driveway gates to let the farmer in and trundled round the back to show him where to put them. He's unloaded and driven off and I've gone to lock the gates back up. Literally as he's driven off and I'm walking down a guy has pulled in the gates and parked up and 3 kids have jumped out and he started unloading their bikes.

I politely ask him to move as he's on private land and he says there are no signs he thought it was a parking spot. I say they are on the gate and it's clearly an enclosed piece of land that is not a parking space and he says he couldn't see them as the gates were open but he'll only be a few minutes. No problem, I say, I'll pop back and shut the gates in 5. Off I toddle.

I have returned and his car is still there and he has gone. He has left a note on the windscreen which says "had to park here no other spaces". I mean WTF?!

WIBU to shut the gates, padlock the fucker in, block the gates with my truck AND then disappear for at least 48 hours?

Yup, they're either home or at the carvery! 🤣

FrippEnos · 31/07/2021 17:43

@Blinky21

Leave him be if it's a one off and he's not blocking you in or harming anyone, life's too short, he's just out with his kids and it's been a tough year
If the OP left the gates open it would invalidate her insurance. But then I am sure that you CBA to read that far.
JammyGem · 31/07/2021 17:44

Surely they'll be back soon, or maybe they've decided to cycle somewhere for tea.
Let's just hope they don't decide to camp out this evening...

PerciphonePuma · 31/07/2021 17:45

@Nanny0gg Yep, as far as I'm aware

BananasAboutBananas · 31/07/2021 17:45

Definitely get your DB to answer the door when he finally returns and get him to play dumb.

Sorry your car is where? Why was it inside the gates on private land? Did you get permission to park there? This all sounds very odd.... i know my sister would never agree to anyone parking here - I don't feel comfortable letting you out until I find out what's gone on...etc

The CF needs to feel some discomfort and as other have said, so far he's had a lovely day with free (secure) parking......at the very least he needs to admit he's a CF.

I’m sure it was on here the other day where I read that it’s legal for some arsehole to block someone on their own drive but illegal to then block them in? Might be dreaming, tho and I think the bloke needs to come crawling hands and knees to apologise for the (fabulous) OP to release him.

Put up a notice
‘PARKING. £20 an hour.

I'm just looking for that thread. Didn't the neighbours block him in. I can't find it anywhere
Mountainpika · 31/07/2021 17:51

As I said upthread, say nothing apologetic and a ransom payment of a donation to charity. In cash.
I wonder if Daddy is having his turn with the children for the first week of the holiday and Mummy is blissfully unaware. Will the children be phoning her to fetch them back to her ASAP, or might they be canny enough to enjoy Daddy's discomfort and predicament?

PizzaPiePizzaPie · 31/07/2021 17:53

I suspect he’s found a way to go home and thinks he can come back tomorrow and gate will just be open. But it won’t hahahaha

It is illegal to block some's access to the highway even if they are on your drive.
Snazzysausage · 31/07/2021 17:54

My guess is that he's cycled the kids home and he'll be back later tonight or tomorrow morning with a back-up mate in case op openly defies him when he tells her straight the error of her ways in locking the gate and she must release his car now this instant. I'll be surprised if he arrives and apologises profusely for being such a dick.

GCrebel · 31/07/2021 17:54

Nah, they’ve got mummy to pick them up. I reckon dopey bollocks’ plan is to wait till it’s dark and try to get the vehicle then.

DentonsFringeArnottsWaistcoat · 31/07/2021 17:54

@SixesAndEights

Perhaps they've cycled home and, to play you at your own game, he's just going to leave it there for a couple of days. I'd leave him to it. He'll need it for Monday I expect.
My thoughts exactly. He knows what you’re doing and he thinks it more inconvenient for you to have his car on your drive than it is for him to be without it for a bit. But come Monday that will change. He’s assuming you’ll give in and open the gate at some point (he might not live far away and might get someone to drop him down there to see if you’ve given in). So, don’t give in. Ever. Grin
KindleAndCake · 31/07/2021 17:54

I've just gone and booked a carvery for tomorrow now.

Abitofalark · 31/07/2021 17:54

It's assumed that this is just parking but you don't actually know what it's about or whether it's a dumped car or what his intentions are. Hence the thought I had earlier about informing the police on the grounds of someone trespassing and acting suspiciously. I would be cautious about giving him any personal information such as phone numbers or explanations that would let him know anything about valuable property having to be kept behind gates for insurance or security reasons.

SixesAndEights · 31/07/2021 17:55

Mummy probably divorced Daddy for his cheeky fuckery. When the kids tell her what happened she'll be ecstatic, I'm sure! Grin

doudouchouchou · 31/07/2021 17:55

bluebeck · 31/07/2021 17:55

I am not sure those rules would apply though re blocking drive as no public highway issues here. OPs car is on her private property, as is CF car.

Shirleyphallus · 31/07/2021 17:56

We had carvery yesterday. Highly jealous of everybody's carrots.
